Rays vs. Red Sox

I have a coworker who won't speak to me. The same coworker and I were chummy for a while. We used to go to sports bars over the years and watch mostly baseball games and talk. At the beginning of this season I looked my coworker dead in the eye and told him the Rays were not going to be last place anymore. In fact, I continued, I told him that the Rays were going to at least be front runners in the wild card for most of the season. My buddy, he laughed and we moved on to another subject. Now, as season comes to a close,  my buddy isn't happy with the feel good story of the Rays. Maybe because he lives in the Rays backyard and roots for the enemy. Maybe he hates being wrong. Most importantly he Red Sox can't seem to shake this little team with the sunshine name airplane hanger for a home field. I like not having my coworker talk to me, at least under these circumstances!

So, big series here, if we can remind all the Red Sox Bandwag... Nation that the Trop is not Fenway south anymore we could potentially lengthen our lead and maybe say hello to the Rays first AL East Championship! I will not get tired of saying that.

What do you think Draysbay? Are excited? Do you have a pulse?

Whoops.

I accidentally voted on a Red Sox sweep.

I don’t know how to feel about myself right now.

There is a cool list.

Right now your name is not on it. But at least you admitted your mistake, can’t hate on a guy for that..

Rays v Sox

Wish I could get to the game tonight.. I’m tired of the “Here we go Red Sox” chants at the Trop !! The Rays used to be an automatic W for the Red Sox but those days are gone. Maybe if we take the Division, they’ll stay away from our stadium ?

Being rude seems to have had an effect.

No kidding. Area Sox fans have been somewhat vocal in complaining about their treatment by Rays fans at the Trop.

Not that I think it’s a bad thing. Basically, the whole of vocal Sox fans at the Trop are rude ones, and they should expect that kind of treatment returned upon them and then some.

I’ve never had a problem with people who come from out of town to watch their team on the road (and the next time I meet one, I’ll buy em a drink). It’s the people who are cheering against their home team that bother me the most because most of them will switch over once their team starts to lose.

Look at Philadephia Flyers fans who used to overrun the Ice Palace when the Bolts sucked. They’re practically non-existant anymore.

Remember when the Yankees game were basically home games for the Stanks?

What happened to those? Same thing will happen with the Sox.

Good point with the bolts games. Melorose is throwing out the first pitch! Go Rays and Bolts!

Yankees are definetly losing their swagger.

I hope we shut them up. This quote raises my blood pressure…..

“It’ll be a fun series,” Lester told reporters after Sunday’s game in Boston. "We always get a lot of fans down there, so it will be kind of be like a home playoff atmosphere.’’

Oh no he didn’t…..

Yeah it kinda scares me too

But I’m witholding any criticism until at least next offseason to see how the changes they made affect this team. I did not like seeing Boyle traded after being signed to an extension, and I’m not sure about Melrose as coach, but at least these guys are getting their hands dirty unlike the Davison group which was hands-off to their own detriment.

They won't. Most of the "Red Sox" fans live in the area...

And call the Rays their second favorite team. Most local Red Sox fans, when asked, will admit when the Red Sox are not playing they root for the Rays. So, that’s a definition, in my eyes, of a local bandwagon Red Sox Fan. Same thing in the area with Seminoles and Gator fans. Most of whom who claim to root for FSU or UF have never set foot onto either of the campuses. Same thing with Yankees and Red Sox fans in the Tampa Bay area. I fully expect the “nation” to be divided after this season.

I've always viewed colleges as a little bit different, mainly because there literally are 2 classes of fans:

Students and Alumni, and everyone else.

Students and Alumni should root for the team which they attended college at. It’s their team. They have actually invested money in the program that was spent on the program. It belongs to them. It’s also the only time where I think it’s acceptable to refer to the team they’re cheering for as ‘their’ team (i.e. It’s acceptable for me to say that I’m rooting for MY Bulls, it is not for me to say that I am rooting for MY Rays; sometimes I slip about the second one, but most of the time I refer to them as the Rays, ‘they’ or ‘them’, not My Rays, ‘we’ or ’us’).

The college one goes to becomes part of you, and you a part of them. Some people who go to school at USF don’t seem to have a complete grasp on this concept yet because the program is young and has no tradition, and it’s still a commuter school, but a lot of that has already been stamped out because the football team has been very successful so far in an extrodinarily short amount of time.

If you’re not an alumni or student at a school however, I feel that rooting for any college you want is fair game as long as you have a connection to the area of the school you’re rooting for. I also think that bandwagoning amongst the masses is a perfectly acceptable exercise simply because of the fact that they don’t share the same type of investment that students and alumni share.

For example, I cheered for the Gators when I was a kid before I went to college. When USF got a team, I didn’t change my allegence because I’d always been a Gator fan. I went to college at SPC and continued to cheer for the Gators. The second I transferred to USF and stepped on campus, I was a Bull. The Gators aren’t even an afterthought. I don’t root for them or cheer for them; as they’re not my team, and they’re not part of me. For me, it’s the Bulls and no one else.

Rays take 2 out of 3

I hate the Red Sox. Gaslampball has adopted the Rays for the remainder of the season due to the fact that San Diego can’t field a team that doesn’t cause pure physical pain to the fans, and that we are tired of talking about the first pick of the 2009 Draft and just want to enjoy baseball for a few weeks.

As a fan base, we will probably curse the team, since we never have rooted for a championship team (besides Tony Hawk). Sorry you are stuck with us.
