by BrettJMiller on Sep 15, 2008 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Take a look at our depth chart at WR

1. Deion Branch (out till next week at earliest)
2. Bobby Engram (out till next week at earliest)
3. Nate Burleson (out for season after first game ACL injury)
4. Logan Payne (out for season after knee injury yesterday)
5. Seneca Wallace (out for 4-6 weeks after calf strain before yesterday’s game, is also our backup QB)
6. Jordan Kent (cut, signed to practice squad)
7. Courtney Taylor (drafted 4th round or something last year, has potential but isn’t there yet)
8. Michael Bumpus (now starting, undrafted free agent from Washington State that was on practice squad to start season)
9. Billy McMullen (hasn’t played in the NFL in like 3 years, signed last week and is now starting for us, fumbled the ball when we would’ve gotten at least 3 points and we would’ve won, avoiding OT)

Our defense got 8 sacks, a defensive TD, and had three or four more pressures that just had the QB scrambling. Julius Jones ran for 127 yards. And yet somehow our WRs and “Free Safety” Brian Russell lost it for us. (Also, one of Hasselbeck’s picks was dropped by our receiver then SF caught it)

It’s been a dark since the Hawks lost in February to Green Bay for me.

This is possible.

It’s also possible that he’s afraid of hurting his elbow so he doesn’t throw his slider and doesn’t put as much movement on his fastball. I also wonder if his FB velocity is down this year.

by kericr on Sep 15, 2008 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I should have read what I typed

What I meant to say was “It’s also possible that he’s afraid of hurting his elbow so he doesn’t throw his slider and when he does he has a hard time targeting it. I also wonder if his FB velocity is down this year.”

Dude, its one start

Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.

by P Brady on Sep 15, 2008 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Kazmir's season has been odd.

Bendix pointed out to me when I mentioned I hoped we got the good Kazmir. His numbers aren’t bad, but in some ways he’s like Carl. We’ve known for a few years that he needed to use his other pitches and avoid long innings, yet he’s shown very little progress in either regard.

He is a good pitcher this year and overall yet it’s not a stretch to say he can’t be and shouldn’t be better at this point. Unless of course he is hurt, then I would ask why he’s being allowed to throw.

by R.J. Anderson on Sep 15, 2008 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, based on what I've seen

Kaz not only has inferior stuff to Price, he doesn’t have near his command or poise, either. And I’m one of those who ripped people earlier in the year for saying Price would be better than Kaz. His velocity never got back to the mid-90s second half form of last season and his command is worse than ever.

www.raysbb.com

Yes, we really do have fans.

by killa3312 on Sep 15, 2008 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

Changeup is better

The slider is debatable. Price’s is harder and when on, has close to as much movement. I’m just concerned with Kaz, period. He was throwing 93-96 the entire second half last season, and hasn’t gotten close to that form at all this year. He has to be injured, he is not this bad of a pitcher.

www.raysbb.com

Yes, we really do have fans.

by killa3312 on Sep 15, 2008 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

The average velocity is the same.

But he only topped out at ~94 tonight. That doesn’t seem very Kazmir-ish.

by R.J. Anderson on Sep 15, 2008 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

My arguement for Kazmir's slider:

Price does throw his harder, but it doesn’t have the insane tight, sharp, late break. Price’s really good, but I just think Kazmirs is more deceptive.

Tools Whore

Sign Bonds!

by Tyler on Sep 15, 2008 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

It makes it more deceptive, sure.

But at the same time the hitter is going from 94+ FB to 88+ SL with a slight break in towards righties, that’s no cake walk.

by R.J. Anderson on Sep 15, 2008 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Additionally

Price is more of a groundball pitcher than Kaz. I am Kaz’s biggest fan and still think he’s going to be great, but I underestimated Price earlier in the season. He’s going to be a really, really good MLB pitcher for a long time. There’s what, 2, maybe 3 LH starting pitchers that throw as hard as consistently as Price?

He had dropped to 92-93 in the 7th

and then got it back and blew Giambi away on nothing but 95 MPH heaters to end the frame. The fact that Price’s fastball at its worst is still better than most lefties’ heaters speaks to how good that pitch is.

It's sad that I have more faith in a rookie

His slider has stunk all year

certainly not the vintage Kaz take out pitch we’ve all become accustomed to.

www.raysbb.com

Yes, we really do have fans.

by killa3312 on Sep 15, 2008 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions

he needs to get it back for next year

he won’t be a great starter without his secondary pitches, its holding him back a lot.

by sofladude77 on Sep 15, 2008 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Blame Ike

talk about a momentum killer.

by sofladude77 on Sep 15, 2008 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

on top of that

Miller park is loaded with Cubs fans

by sofladude77 on Sep 15, 2008 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

well good night to everyone as I am off to bed

hopefully I can listen on the radio to the rays coming back…

by Underdogs on Sep 15, 2008 9:51 PM EDT reply actions

Another thing

too bad this is a blowout I’d love to see them have to use Papelbon

by sofladude77 on Sep 15, 2008 9:53 PM EDT reply actions

the one issue with Aybar

is he’s not a great athlete and is limited to the corner positions. He is a decent hitter so he could have some value.

by sofladude77 on Sep 15, 2008 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Cleveland maybe?

They’ve cooled on Marte from what I can tell.

by Vin on Sep 15, 2008 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions

He's fallen so far.

I couldn’t see us landing much for him though. Shapiro is smart.

by R.J. Anderson on Sep 15, 2008 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Shapiro smart?

he committed big money for a guy who can’t field a position!!

by sofladude77 on Sep 15, 2008 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Shapiro is a one hit wonder

the Bartolo Colon trade. If the Rays signed Travis Hafner to that kind of money it would cripple us.

by sofladude77 on Sep 15, 2008 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Oakland could probably use him too,

but dealing with Beane isn’t fun.

Nomar and Blake are free agents, LA might be interested in taking him back.

by Vin on Sep 15, 2008 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't see why we couldn't work out a win/win with LA.

Sorta like we did with Minnesota. There’s just too much that makes sense for both teams.

by Vin on Sep 15, 2008 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I liked the quote that came out around the deadline.

“The Delmon deal made Minnesota lose their guts.” Or something like that.

Delmon is fat and bad.

by R.J. Anderson on Sep 15, 2008 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

It was still a win/win at the time.

But yeah, I could see how that would make Smith lose his nerve.

by Vin on Sep 15, 2008 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

That was a crazy few weeks.

New stadium and Delmon gone. Just insane.

by R.J. Anderson on Sep 15, 2008 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

We have a lot of pieces that need moving.

Well not really a lot, but everyone that needs to be moved should net a decent return.

by Vin on Sep 15, 2008 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Friedman is crafty.

I’m curious how high payroll will be expanded.

by R.J. Anderson on Sep 15, 2008 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt it'll be much.

I think it all depends on whether or not he feels the need to replace Floyd and Percival.

by Vin on Sep 15, 2008 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Although

I would really like to see Upton and Balfour extended in the offseason.

by Vin on Sep 15, 2008 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm up in Minneapolis tonight wearing my Rays gear.

I got at least 5 “thanks for that no good piece of shit Delmon Young” from at least 5 separate groups of Twins fans in the sports bar tonight :)

by Jason Collette on Sep 15, 2008 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

But I see what you're saying.

Getting rid of Peirre/Jones and letting Kemp/Ethier play every day would be the best thing for the Dodgers.

by Vin on Sep 15, 2008 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Blake or Ibanez

either would be good for this team

by sofladude77 on Sep 15, 2008 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

DJ goes deep

time for Hinske to grab some bench

by sofladude77 on Sep 15, 2008 9:57 PM EDT reply actions

0-2 homer

Dan Johnson needs to play more.

by Vin on Sep 15, 2008 9:58 PM EDT reply actions

Hinske's replacement??

Hinske is doing nothing for 2 months, why not Dan?

by sofladude77 on Sep 15, 2008 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I've been a big supporter of this.

Although, ideally, neither would be in the outfield.

by Vin on Sep 15, 2008 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Scott Lewis = Dominance

That 86 MPH heater is baffling.

John Burketts year in Atlanta was so much fun to watch. His fastball moved 6 inches and he located it like a champ.

So much fun to watch hitter jump out of the way Jeter style and have strike 3 called on the inside corner.

Tools Whore

Sign Bonds!

Jeter sticks his butt out like a female cat in heat

Fernando's friends call him "Nando"... Fernie sounds gay.

Just to throwing that out there……I just put that further up in the thread but i figured no one saw it up there.

Hammel time

can’t touch his big bender.

by sofladude77 on Sep 15, 2008 10:20 PM EDT reply actions

Or with it.

Those baby rays have Kalas features.

by R.J. Anderson on Sep 15, 2008 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

LMAO

I didn’t know Rays could have bald spots.

Sign lady must die.

by EminenceFront on Sep 15, 2008 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Another thing to point out

Why does Houston need to fix their stadium roof when Dallas never managed to fix theirs!!

by sofladude77 on Sep 15, 2008 10:32 PM EDT reply actions

why did longo come out? HBP? sorry i missed the first half of the game
