Serious question:
Navi should get credited with a ground rule double shouldn’t he?
by Vin on Sep 16, 2008 10:20 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
My guess is that he only touched first. If he had run to second they would have had to credit him with a double I would think, but since he only touched first, he only got the single.

Hm. That makes sense.
I thought it would be automatic since the ball left the field of play and I don’t think you can refuse second on a ground-rule double.
Oh well.

You can not go to the base though. And since the game is over, no one forced him to go there.

So can you stop at third and refuse a home run?
by Vin on Sep 16, 2008 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
if you could, i bet bj would be the 1st to do it lol jk

Sure why not? If you missed home and they protested it, you wouldn't get the home run, you'd be called out.

Yes
it’s happened before. Can’t remember the exact game, but there was a home run called back by the official scorer at one point or another because the hitter got mobbed by his teammates before he ever reached homeplate.

I think this happend to Robin Ventura
in the playoffs against the Braves one year. Walkoff grandslam IIRC, but only was credited for a single since he was mobbed as soon as he rounded the bag.

That sounds right to me
I think that’s the example I was thinking of.

since the bases were loaded, i suppose two runs could have been forced home, too. interesting question

i agree
and i wonder if the rule is really different for a Ground Rule Double vs. a Home Run. seems like the final should have been 3-1 with the hit being scored as a ground rule double.
by benfunke on Sep 17, 2008 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Navi would have had to touch 2nd base
Pena would have had to touch home for the run to count, from what I understand.
by Vin on Sep 17, 2008 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
both of those things would have needed to happen?
and if they did, both runs would count? interesting. i wonder if any fantasy leagues hinge on that not happening…

I was actually wondering if any RBI or Runs Scored milestones have ever been effected by something like this.
But yeah, from what I gather/have been told you can’t assume a base. It has to be physically touched.

Piece of advice
If you ever go to an away game, and find yourself outnumbered in a stadium, and that stadium allows giant cowbells that are manufactured for drum kits, it’s probably not a good idea to taunt the opposition in the bottom of the ninth inning by asking “let me hear you ring that thing NOW!”
Learn from the mistakes of others and respect my bell.

Fail for failing the failure of the cowbell
Rays fans have to cover their ears too. Nobody follows that damn cowbell etiquette!

FAIL FOR FAILING THE FAILING OF THE FAILURE OF THE COWBELL
Don’t misunderstand, I’m well aware that some people just don’t have respect for others around them when it comes to ringing the cowbell in someone’s ear or at inappropriate times, but it doesn’t happen every game like it does during the Red Sox series. People tend to be more amped to use them when those Red Sox chants get started. I figure that if it’s loud enough to be annoying to me, then it’s surely loud enough to annoy some nearby bastard Sox fan, and I’m willing to suffer a little if it means they have to suffer too. I do however fine the horns a bit annoying when they are blown all the damn time right behind me, but I’ll put up with it for the same reason mentioned above. A lot of people aren’t used to clapping and yelling for this team yet like fans in other stadiums, and the noisemakers are their way of expressing themselves. I don’t mind it if the alternative is a lot of fans expressing little emotion or excitement for what the team is doing on the field.

Fail for using CAPS while failing my fail for failing the failure of the cowbell
I guess I’m too old school. If you want to annoy a Sox fan, there are many ways you can do it without pissing off the Rays fans around you as well. For example, I tend to accidentally spill things on their pretty shirts or jerseys. Or just tell them how much they suck over and over and over (x100).

This

Unacceptable. Not hard to open your mouth and put your hands together. Not you specifically, but fans in general.
If you are able to cheer for the Bulls, Lightning, Bucs, Storm then I’m pretty sure its easy to connect that to cheering for the Rays.
The most I’ll tolerate are thundersticks, even those are a reach.

Then you may want to stay home tonight, kids...
There’s a cowbell giveaway for the first 10,000 in Rays gear.

Fail!
It’s the first 15,000.
Although I should go and smash mine on the ground…one less cowbell in this world.

I guess I got bad intel on the giveaway amount
I’ve heard that people have been putting the bells on ebay, and that there were some that were getting bids of $25+, though that was for the bigger bell. The one tonight looks like it’s the smaller one they sell at the Trop.
by rayweaver on Sep 17, 2008 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I question whether the Trop is still one of those giant cowbell friendly stadiums...
Cowbell KID has “retired” due to “pressure from above.” No more Cowbell Kid it appears…
I guess I’ll find the answer to my confusion on Saturday when I go.

With Wheeler getting the win.
No pitcher who has been on the Rays staff at all this year has a losing record.
Pretty cool.

It was actually "at all this year"
Glover wasn’t listed on mlb.com for some reason, but every other guy who has been on the mound at least once this year has a .500 record or better.
Glover was the only guy who didn’t. He went 1 and 2.
