Riggans goes on DL
They probably wouldn’t have bothered last season, but putting Riggans on the DL gives the team some additional flexibility in formulating its postseason roster. Riggans isn’t likely to play again this season as he recovers from the infection that led to the surgery, and the Rays can now use his roster spot to add someone who wasn’t in the majors as of Aug. 31.

Are they really going to want/need THREE players who weren't with the team on 8/31 on their postseason roster?

Johnson was with the team back in April
And was on the roster again on the 31st.

From what I understand, DanJo being with the team in April doesn’t matter.

You can only replace someone with someone of the same position
If they didn’t put Riggans on the DL, then we wouldn’t have been able to have a backup catcher in the playoffs.

Riggans played left-field once this season.

Will Fernie be one of the three? I hope so. Not sure if it applies to him though. When was he called up?

I'd put the chance of Jaso making the postseason roster at about 5%
It’ll be Michel Hernandez.

Unfortunately
Pray that Navy doesn’t get hurt. I hope they can rest him well before the playoffs start, because he might end up starting 19 consecutive games.
