I was talking to Jonny (Gomes) that if they clinch here maybe I could slip in and spray some champagne since I was there so long.

Huff and Hall
Huff and Toby Hall were both here through a lot of truly ridiculous nonsense. So while they both may have given some ill-advised parting comments, I can’t really blame them for their frustration. I just can’t hate those guys and yes, I agree, almost feel sorry for Huff.

He shouldn't have been a turd when he left then.
Besides, how many guys are still on the team from when Huff was around? There’s been like an 80% turnover since then. He did manage to say all the right things until his last year with the Rays, and if he could have kept his mouth shut, he wouldn’t get booed everytime he steps to the plate at the Trop.

So we boo him...
because he said what we all were saying and thinking?

How many former Rays were part of the organization for 9-10 years?
Huff was with the organization for nine years; Hall ten years. Both spent parts of seven years on the major league team. How many former players fit that description?
They played for four managers, a micromanaging general partner so poor at relationship building and running a ballclub that Bud Selig had to step in and assign John McHale as the COO, deal with the consequences of a subpar-to-incompetent front office, play to sparse fan support with threats of contraction hanging overhead.
Huff was flip-flopped positions as often as Upton and didn’t gripe. Hall may not be good at his job, but quietly sat his turn behind equally crappy Flaherty and DiFelice and did what was asked.
They had reasons to complain after a decade of the classic Devil Rays. I don’t blame them for letting slip some frustration.

I can sympathize with anyone who bashed the org who played here for more than a season.
Oh well. I don’t have any bad feelings towards Huff or Hall anymore, but Hall still is not very good at his job.

As the president of the BRING AUBREY BACK fan club, I'd like to make the following statement:

by kericr on Sep 23, 2008 12:34 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He's having a season like 2003.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 23, 2008 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't really know for sure if I'd want him back or not
The bring Aubrey back thing was more a joke. I’d want to ask three legitimate questions:
Is this the real Aubrey Huff, or is the real Aubrey Huff the one we’re more familiar with?
If he comes back, is he going to mesh with the personalities in this clubhouse?
If he comes back, are the fans going to tolerate his first 2 months of the season, where he will undoubtedly have a .230 BA, .300 OBP and 5 HRs?
If the answer to any of these is no, then you don’t try to trade for him.

Mostly because Randy Winn is a much better option and outside of
Jayson Werth would be my number one trade target this offseason.

Our main discussion has been centered around the need to improve RF.
Year Tm Pos Inn PO A TE FE FPct DPS DPT BIZ Plays RZR OOZ
2008 SF RF 1104 308 5 0 3 .991 4 0 253 239 .945 69
(Plays + OOZ)/BIZ = 1.21
THT shows no RF data for Aubrey since 2006, when he received a handful of innings from Houston.
Defense gives the advantage to Winn and it’s not even close.
Avg wOBA over last 4 years is Winn=.370, Huff=.351. I chose a 4 year span to see which player plays at a higher level more consistently. I think Winn is the more consistent guy, where Huff has more volatile seasons. Using FanGraphs Compare function it would appear that over the last few years this volatility is shown. Take out Winn’s subpar 2006 and his numbers have been consistently high. I also think Winn would fit in better here due to him stealing 40/45 bases the last 2 years and the most important thing, Winn is a switch hitter, where Aubrey is a lefty.
Offensively, I would argue that it is a push. Huff has the better power numbers, but Winn does a better job of consistently getting on base, getting over, and getting in.
Their price is pretty similar, not cheap, not Adam Dunn. I just see Winn as the better player all around and a better choice for filling our needs. Of course I have been pining for Werth all season. According to MLB4U.com Werth signed a 1-year deal back in January. If this is true and he becomes a FA after this year that would be my #1 objective, 2nd priority would be Winn. He has 1-year left (as does Huff) so the Giants would like to move him. Fortuitously, the Giants have more holes than a sieve so I would think it would be easier to make a deal. Plus Sabean is not exactly Alfred Einstein and they don’t play in our division.

Well obviously Huff wouldn't be the RF
I’d rather have Huff and a Perez/Gross combo than Winn in RF.
by rglass44 on Sep 24, 2008 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
forgot to add Winn would make a poor RF.
by rglass44 on Sep 24, 2008 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I guess I should post it again
Most OOZ with the best RZR in 1100+ innings in RF this year
Yeah he’s terrible though. Perez would be a great 4th OF and I like Gabe a lot, but why take up 2 spots on a roster when Winn could play 5 out of 6 days.

I just don't see Min getting rid of him.
They got him to a pretty friendly contract for someone of his skills, they love said skillset, and the guy is a heck of a player. I think they look at it how we look at Crawford. Dangle his name and if one of the dumb GM’s makes you an amazing offer you take it. We don’t have a dumb GM so I don’t think he comes to us.

and he's a poor fielder
with one good season (where good means significantly better than average)

He's got a good arm and with either Carlos Gomez or B.J. Upton manning the middle
he doesn’t need the greatest range.

Wait weren't you just advocating Winn for his range?
His arm is pretty weak.

PLEASE
tell me you are not saying Cuddy has a weak arm????

His arm is stronger than Fernies
and he is faster than Gross and he hits a lot better than both against lefties and righties.

there's little evidence that three good outfielders waste their talent
and so putting a mediocre-to-poor outfielder out there would still hurt just as much.
