Wooo

This is so frickin exciting. The rays aren’t even my first team and I’m so happy. You guys who have been with them from the start, who live down there, must be flipping out.

I love fancy charts!

Would the rays get a late game if they win division?

Thought you guys would appreciate this

A post on the OTM playoff-clinching thread:
———————————————
With all the shit the Sox had to put up with this year, from that stupid Japan trip to a ridiculous schedule with almost no days off to the Manny debacle and the injuries to Beckett, Schilling, Oritz, Drew, Lowell, , etc.., etc.

This is a team with TRUE GRIT!!!!
———————————————-

Beware those gritty Sox!

Yeah it sucks when the league makes you get less off days than any other team.

Every team in the AL East had a significant injury. Where would Toronto be if Marcum and Wells hadn’t gotten hurt? So this guy is arguing that their schedule was tough huh. I would venture a guess that it was nearly identical to ours and they get to end the season at home. It sure is nice to taste their tears.

waaaaah

I had to laugh at them celebrating last night. Defending World Champs should act like they’ve been there before :)

Last count, the following Rays have been on the DL at least once this year:

-Upton
-Crawford
-Longoria
-Pena
-Navarro
-Kazmir
-Percival
-Baldelli
-Floyd
-Aybar
-Bartlett

Unless I’m mistaken, every position on the field has been affected save 2B?

Someone should remind Boston their payroll is more than 3x higher than ours at the moment. We’ve done more with less :)

by Jason Collette on Sep 24, 2008 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I knew I forgot someone....thanks

Anyone doubt we could have won 100+ this year if we had better health luck? That’s a lot of DL trips, which is the trend around the league post-Mitchell Report days just from a casual observation.

by Jason Collette on Sep 24, 2008 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions

except to suspensions

amazing at some point, every single position wasn’t available and for a few days we were without Upton, Crawford AND Longoria

Still without CC and Percy has to keep shooting up to stand at this point. Maybe he will be too injured and Price can take his spot? :)

by joeybw on Sep 24, 2008 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

You know

This was a tough season for the Red Sox. From Schill’s injury to Drew’s back problems, with the Manny thing and Beckett sucking, it’s amazing that this team cracked the mid 90’s in the win column again. We had Paul Byrd and Bartolo Colon starting on a doubleheader, for christs sake. It shows depth, if only.

We also should have a better record than you guys, but I guess we’re all okay with the WC.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

by MerryGoByeBye on Sep 24, 2008 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Shill's injury?

Your better off because of it. You would have a better record than us if you had stepped up and beat us at your’s or our place.

Also, Beckett’s the most overrated pitcher in baseball. There I said it. He’s had essentially one good season. I’d take 10 pitcher’s over him for the regular season.

by rglass44 on Sep 24, 2008 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

What part?

I may have exaggerated a bit, but I do think he’s vastly overrated because of his postseason heroics.

by rglass44 on Sep 24, 2008 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

good point about the post-season

but he’s had more than one good season. in fact, they’ve all be good except for 2006, especially when you rate them by something like FIP or tRA.

the “i’d take 10 pitchers ahead of him statement” is interesting. i’d probably put Beckett in the 8-10 range.

Beyond the Boxscore // Calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy.

by Sky Kalkman on Sep 24, 2008 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Better because of Schill's injury?

Why? How? He would, at least, be a better version of what Paul Byrd is being now.

And about Beckett, you know, he had a bad season this year and in 2006. He got injured early on, and never seemed to get better. But he’s a very good pitcher, and might be the best ever in the post-season. Beckett heroics in the post-season are not because of small sample or shit like. We saw last year what he could do, when he basically put us back against the Indians. Maybe he just loves the spotlights. But you’ll understand what I mean if Shields or Garza get rocked in the ALDS. Good performance in the post-season IS a big deal. But Beckett has good enough numbers to be one of the top pitchers in the league.

When he wasn't being a d-bag...

Who would he have taken starts from? Probably Lester at the beginning of the season at least.

by rglass44 on Sep 24, 2008 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay, fair point

But I think he would have taken starts from Buch, who pretty much sucked from day 1.

by MerryGoByeBye on Sep 24, 2008 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

They were putting a lot of faith in him at the beginning, though

I doubt they would have gone w/ Lester in the roto over Gay Buttholz, but that’s just my take on it.

by rglass44 on Sep 24, 2008 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Best ever in the post-season is quite the stretch

even for a homer such as yourself. No doubt he is good, but I’d put Mo Rivera ahead of him off the top of my head. Below is B-ref’s stats on post-season pitchers.

Did you not see the list above you?

The Rays had a plethora of injuries this season…and they didnt have a $150 million payroll to combat those injuries. Most everyone on this board respects the Red Sox with regard to their baseball ability. Maybe more Red Sox fans should show the same respect to this Rays club and what they have been able to accomplish in the most competitive division in professional sports.

by td32 on Sep 24, 2008 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess that is debatable...

The point is, on a year to year basis, the AL East to the most competitive in sports. The salary cap in football allows for parody. IN baseball, the major markets have a competitive advantage. Boston and NY are probably the two most powerful org’s in MLB, and they reside in the same division.

For a team like the Rays to compete in a division like this really isnt fair…but that’s an entirely different argument.

by td32 on Sep 24, 2008 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

The NFC East this year just looks great right now. All 4 teams would be arguably the best team in any other division. Too bad I hate them all.

What division?

They would likely win the NFC West and North and the AFC South and North. They are at least as good as any team in the NFC South, and the AFC West may be the one that would be tough with the Broncos and possibly chargers.

by rglass44 on Sep 24, 2008 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

AFC South?

Really? With the Colts, Jags and Titans over there? Don’t write the Jags and the Colts off only because they had slow starts. San Diego is also at 1-2, and they might be the best team in football.

With that schedule you may be right.

After Philthy and Cowgirls they get St. Louis and Cleveland at home then in Det, but then it gets really tough again. They’ll most likely do like they always do appear to play inconsistently as the beat up on the weakest teams in the league and lose to the above average teams in the league. Mediocrity at its finest.

by rglass44 on Sep 24, 2008 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

a tangent

Hank Steinbrenner recently whined about the playoff structure — the eight playoff teams aren’t necessarily the eight best teams in the majors and the Yankees got screwed this year by being in a division with the Yankees and Rays. They might have won some of the other divisions. No, he did not mentioned anything about money.

Lamar Hunt agrees

Let’s just have a 64 team best of 7 series tournament.

It’d be like the FA cup in British Football. I’d like the Dunedin Blue Jays to take a shot at the Mariners this year.

by ReasonableDoubt on Sep 24, 2008 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh

The payroll argument is as valid as the one that points that the Rays are only doing what they’re doing because they sucked for so long, and got to pick high in the draft like every year. It might be true, but, really, who cares? I have lots of respects for the Rays, and I think it’s a pretty good team, and one that could be very good for a long time.

The Red Sox and the Rays are so good this year because of the same thing: Farm system. The team is more about Pedroia, Youkilis, Lester, Paps, Masterson and the rest. Okay, the Sox spent more money (JD Drew, Dice-K, and so on), but that doesn’t mean shit. Look at the Tigers, the M’s and the Yankees. Also, the Sox also has more pressure than the Rays because of the payroll and the money around the team. You guys had the chance to stop and ‘grow talent’, and have done it beautifully. If Theo ever done that, there would be a shitload of people wanting him dead.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

by MerryGoByeBye on Sep 24, 2008 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

and the smart ones would see what he was doing and applaud

You guys tried the whole grow your own team this year and after failing realized you needed to go out and get Bay, Kotsay, Byrd, Colon, Lane, and Mcbeth. Seems like some desperate moves from a panicked team. I wouldn’t worry you guys beat the Angels last year. I’m sure you’ll find them pushovers.

Not.

Bay was the only that cost anything, though, in both money and trade cost

Colon was before the season and cost very little — anyone could have had him.

i agree

while having more money is certainly an advantage, it doesn’t matter as much as most people think. intelligence is #1, then money.

Beyond the Boxscore // Calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy.

by Sky Kalkman on Sep 24, 2008 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, that's the point

You can have lots of money to spend, but if in the end of the day you trade Jair Jurrjens for Edgar Renteria or Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano, you’re going to get in trouble. Baseball is different than Football or Basketball, because young players take longer to get expensive.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

by MerryGoByeBye on Sep 24, 2008 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Ahhh...you just made a classic mistake...

Saying the Rays were built with high draft picks. Longoria, Upton, and who? Don’t count Baldelli, because he has been relatively useless this season. Outside of those 2, you cant name any. This team was built with little player making wise trades and FA acquisitions. Hell, 2 of our guys that have played a ton were cast off by the Sox in Pena and Hinske.

by td32 on Sep 24, 2008 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not saying that, because I don't think that

I just think it’s as true as the ‘high payroll’ thing.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

by MerryGoByeBye on Sep 24, 2008 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

C'mon...the high payroll certainly makes a difference...

COuld the Rays afford to go out and get guys like Dice-K, Manny, JD Drew, take on Lowell’s salary when most considered him done, Schilling?
\

You certainly arent the Yankees with regards to spending frivously, but it certainly makes a major impact.

by td32 on Sep 24, 2008 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I agree

But it’s counterbalanced by what I said: High payrolls lead to crazy high expectations, and high pressure. Take a read at any Yankees blog. They’re thinking about getting EVERY FA in the market. Now think what would happen if Cashman said ‘fuck that noise’, and the MFY sucked once again next season? He would have to get out of the USA and change his name to Abdullah Cashman or shit for a chance to survive. :)

So these teams don’t have ‘time’ to further develop their farm system, because while the ‘true’ fans of baseball understand when a team is rebuilding, there aren’t lots of ‘true’ fans out there. But I do agree with you, building a team is easier when you’re working with a big payroll, because you can take a gamble here and there and lock young guys. It just isn’t that big of a factor when you’re GM is a dumbass (see under Bavasi, Bill). If the Sox and the Rays are good, it’s mainly because Theo and Friedman are great at what they do.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!
