Playoff Roster?
Gotta get the roster back down to 25....who do you go with?
Gotta get the roster back down to 25....who do you go with?
Definites (19)---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shields, Kaz, Garza, Sonny - starting staff
Balfour (R), Howell (L), Percival (R), Wheeler(R), Bradford(R) - RPs
C - Navarro & someone...probably Hernandez.
IF - Pena, Aki, Bartlett, Longoria
OF - Gross, Hinske, Upton
DH - Floyd
My guess on the other 6------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RP - we need another lefty, Miller has experience and has pitched well lately. He's in.
IF - Aybar & Zobrist (he's on fire, and can play OF)
OF/DH - Rocco, Perez, Crawford (if he's healthy, if not we go with pitcher #11....David Price)
This could leave both Price & E-Jax off the roster....but would anyone have any confidence in Jackson coming out of the pen? I feel bad for him, but what purpose would he really serve right now? The only question I'd have is when we called up Perez...if he's not eligible than CC is definitely in, and we go with 11 pitchers.

At least one of Hammel or Price will be on the roster
If one of the starters gets shelled early, they’ll want someone who can go 5 or 6 to save the arms of the rest of the bullpen.
Vogt early, Vogt often.

good point
though, I’d add E-Jax to the list of possibilities there.
That would mean we’re at 11 pitchers, so I think that leaves out either Crawford, Perez, or Zobrist….likely Perez or CC, based upon health.

gotta have a long guy
what a shame to think Rocco and CC could both be left out of the playoffs, from a purely sentimental standpoint.
Does suck about EJ, the guy starts all year, doesnt get to enjoy what he helped earn. blows

price should be in before Percival and Miller
i’d rather have Jackson than Percival, too
Hinske’s no lock, especially if Crawford can play.

as great as his story has been
I would rather Perez than Rocco, he simply brings more to the table.

really?
i would have to say that rocco is safe and wont be used all that much, only as a PH and the DH against LHP’s and i would be sad to see rocco not on the playoff roster after all he has come back from. HINKSE MUST GO!

Why keep a guy who won't be used much?
Rocco strikes out too much for me. Perez can steal bases. Perez is a better defender at this time. Rocco isn’t available everyday. He has had some clutch hits since he’s been back, but it’s not enough to keep him around.

I would say...
Jackson makes it. Invariably, there is going to be a game where the Rays will get blown out in their next month of baseball, and you certainly don’t want to burn up your 5 key bullpen guys in that game(s).

didn't want to start a new FS but this is from Lancaster
The Rays have some middle-infield insurance for the playoffs.
Reid Brignac, whose minor-league season ended Aug. 6 when he was hit by a pitch and suffered a broken lef wrist, is healthy and playing in the Instructional League.
Should the Rays suffer an injury up the middle during the playoffs, they wouldn’t hesitate to activate Brignac, Andrew Friedman said.
No major news on the roster front today. Friedman said Troy Percival’s status is still unsettled, and the same goes for Carl Crawford.
The only players who have been told they’re not on the roster are pitchers Jeff Niemann, Mitch Talbot and Juan Salas. No surprises there.

now I am about as big of a Brignac fan as you will find
but there is no way I want to see him anywhere near the field in the playoff’s. The guy looked shaky in the middle of the season, now have him away from baseball for 2 months and try to throw him in the playoffs. I would rather see Velandia.

i would think that zobrist would be the starter if something happens
brignac would be added just in case something happens to him or aybar

We can reset the roster at the beginning of every series
So if there’s a team with a bunch of Lefties, Rocco can get on. If the team we’re facing is soft on lefties, Rocco can sit for a week.

When does the playoff roster get announced?
I mean, when is it due by?
by joeybw on Sep 30, 2008 11:23 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't when the ALDS roster will be announcer
but Crawford is our starting LF for it, he will bat towards the bottom of the lineup, initally. Joe Maddon just announced in, its on rotoworld.

Shame
We have all these guys who have been a part of the way the season has turned out and to think some may not make the roster is a terrible shame. I think E-Jax is out. The rest is a toss-up. I just don’t envy Joe Maddon right now.
Side note, I think if we play the White Sox, Hinske could be sat in favor of Perez since he bats switch and Chicago has tough Lefty pitching.
