I'd put it more under: "Important to Win"
Not really life or death.

"IF" we make the playoffs
We going Kaz,Shields,Garza first 3 games or Shields,Kaz,Garza
Why would he swing at that
Fucking 9 balls in a row and he swings
Felix has more than one pitch.
But he only throws his fastball and has apparently lost his great curve.

after reading that article about uptons shoulder
Im concered
Hey there's a break.
Now with two outs and and men on the corners, here comes Kaz to pitch the second inning of an 0-0 game.
It's a little easier to gripe about stuff like that when it's a good defensive play by the other team that ends your rally.
That bases loaded jam last night is a good example too.
I should make a sign that says "Hit hit here Navi!"
And the target is a donut with sprinkles.
Somehow I don’t think it’ll go over well.
He doesn't seem to be swinging at as many terrible pitches...
Though I haven’t looked at pitchf/x to prove my point.
He's hit the ball hard the last few times up.
It’s not like he can aim better.

I like Java
Do not associate that garbage pitcher with either a cup of coffee or the wonderful programming language.
To your credit however,
I’ve actually thought of moving to Seattle more than once. I’d probably fit in pretty well there.
yeah, but Joba and Mo and five shmucks would still be a top 10 bullpen, maybe top 5
bullpen depth is overrated. bullpen aces are crazy important.
As a Yankee hater, I can't agree with this.
But assuming I was a logical man, you’d be absolutely right.
I'll be at one of them
No idea which one yet though. Probably Tuesday.
by ReasonableDoubt on Sep 4, 2008 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions
It's his out pitch
He gets more swings and misses with that one than with any other placement.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
He's probably about as entitled to it as three or four other players on this team.
The Rays should seriously consider not giving out a team MVP award this year.
I think that the SPTimes article this morning pretty much castrated that entire line of thought
At least until the next time he messes up.
his range is fine
but he forgot how to catch a ball so he still sucks
except for this series, of course
No blunders.
Just situations that leave you wishing we still had Crawford’s defense.

correct
i sure as hell am not defending Hinske as an outfielder. i’d almost rather risk Floyd’s and Baldelli’s health in the OF than see Hinske out there.
Boots + Fur = Foghorn.
Cannons... fire them.
www.BucEm.com - SBNation's home for discussion of all things regarding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
still a lot of innings left
but it is nice to see Kazmir stop the bledding….. i know only 2 games but we looked like garbage
I wonder if it is just a focus problem. Lets put him on some Ritalin for a game and see how he does :)
FYI all
Prob don’t care, but Aceves came from Mexican League (like Jake, he couldn’t cut it there), signed as FA in offseason, pitched at A, AA, AAA this season before recent callup.
Pretty effective in the minors, could he be worse than Rasner or Ponson?
The Yanks do a pretty decent job at coming other leagues for talent.
Edwar came from an indy league.

By the way
I’m following Scranton / Pawtucket on MiLB Gameday. If you can break away, cut to there in a few. The pitcher taht just finished an inning forPawtucket, Beau Vaughan, might have 1 of the all time best player pix.
by nyyfaninlaaland on Sep 4, 2008 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions
I give him credit
for making it this far. like McClain of the Gaints last night hitting his first HR in the majors
By the way
Not trolling. Following here cause trolls and suicide watch on high alert on my normal Yanks spot.
Rocco can hit righties.
Can’t he? Besides he would make up for it in the field for just 5 or 6 innings.
he has in the past
had a better avg vs righties most of his career, just Maddon is playing Floyd vs righties.
Normally I wouldn't question Joe
But since we lost the last two games, I guess we can question his calls.
How do you mean?
We’ve got plenty of pitchers up, and we go to Seattle, face Morrow in his 1st start (interesting), the Hyphenate (Rowland-Smith), and Silva. Can’t be that screwed.

Did we ever figure out if the use of Regression on this site is appropriate?
I.E. Aybar regressing to the mean indicates that he’ll improve his stats?
do you mean can the word "regression" imply improvement in addition to getting worse?
if so, yes. statistically, at least.
Mean is the middle
If you regress towards the mean, it just means you move closer to the middle.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
how is it correct?
you could think of it as from “regression to the mean”, which means moving the measure of data closer to the mean, thereby removing noise and reducing sample error. you can move data that’s above the mean or below the mean towards the mean.
you could also define regression as movement towards expectation.
I am either confused, or see confusion in the use of that term within that scope.
Regression in statistical analysis is a measurement of the relationship between a set of values when compared to appropriate independent variables, but having your stats balance towards the mean indicates movement, which if you’re moving towards the mean in a positive fashion, the term ‘regression’ seems inappropriate, as that is a backwards movement from the initial visual outcome. To me, when talking about a shift in statistical balance forward in relation to the mean, ‘progression’ seems more appropriate.
Read and learn
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regression_toward_the_mean
This far predates baseball, yo.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
For future refrence
I do not use Wikipedia for fact-checking.

i agree that regression commonly implies getting worse
how about this dumb analogy — a regression equation takes input data and spits out an expectation. when you say a player is going to regress, their input data spits out a future expectation that their results will tend towards.

NYY running out of options
Rasner not working, Kennedy/Hughes failure, Ponson has fallen off, Aceves should get a shot.
Hughes isn't really a failure
he had broken ribs. i agree Kennedy was overhyped as a prospect, but should still be a decent 4th or 5th
How can you call Kennedy/Hughes failures?
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 4, 2008 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Plus Kennedy's tRA is better than Edwin's.
Hughes is high, but one bad season doesn’t make him a failure.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 4, 2008 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Kennedy's a bit on the outs in NY
Took a tough loss in AAA playoffs tonight – below. But give him time. Hughes was rather good late last season – only Yanks playoff win. He should be fine too.
by nyyfaninlaaland on Sep 4, 2008 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions
I never claimed either was a success.
But to be a Rays fan and call a young pitcher a failure at this point in their career seems pretty ridiculous.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 4, 2008 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree
But there just seems to be an excessive amount of enthusiasm for the guy. I’ve seen 1/3 a year of pretty good pitching followed by a year of not so much. My contention is that the Yankees made a dire mistake trying to count on him with Kennedy to handle the #2 and #3 spots in their rotation.
Well yes, the hype was overkill.
But “not living up to the hype” != failure.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 4, 2008 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions
#3 and #4 spots, with Joba
and it would have been for one year of Santana. when they sign CC this off-season (which they wouldn’t have done if Santana was signed long term) they’ll have a Santana-like pitcher AND Hughes and Kennedy.
Santana this year and Santana long term looks better than either Hughes or Kennedy, independently or combined.
that's not the question
assuming the Yankees sign CC, he fills their Santana-type for 2009 through 2015.
so the question is Santana for 2008 or Hughes/Kennedy for 2008-2013
I would say they made the right decision in not pulling the trigger on that trade
But then they went and traded prospects for Nady, so my answer would be no, Sanatana for 2008 would have been better than Hughes/Kennedy for 2008-2013 because the Yanks are solely and exclusively consumed with a win now at any cost mentality.
Way late so this won't be seen
but you are completely incorrect. Letting your anti-NYY feelings rule over analysis.
Look at what NY did in their pen this season – Veras, Ramirez, have important roles. Bruney didn’t start with NY but was picked up on waivers. Britton was acquired by trading a castoff (Jaret Wright). Hawkins was signed but dumped. Main FA acquisition of recent past (resigning Mo doesn’t count – we keep our own we like) Farnsworth was dished. Have seen guys like trade acquisition Albaladejo (hurt like every other pitcher), and promos Robertson and Coke. Yes they signed or traded for guys (Marte) to fill holes. But that’s exactly what the Rays have done.
And your point about Santana directly contradicts the win now at all costs point. As RJ suggests, the jury is still out.
by nyyfaninlaaland on Sep 5, 2008 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions
ignore a year of injuries
go back to Hughes being a top pitching prospect and having moderate success in the majors over a few starts — worth being excited about, no?
Foot still in a boot
Wouldn’t be shocked if they worked Joba up in innings again if they got hot and he was fine physically. Need to get him innings to up his possible work next season – that 30 inning bump thing you know.

Total aside - sorry to bore, but this game sucks to me
Yanks AA club went up 2-0 against Sox affilate. Buchholz started, went 6, 3ER, ND.
In AAA, Pawtucket squared series at 1. Kennedy went 7, 2ER, lost for Yanks. They released Jason Lane (from Astros) 2 weeks ago, he signed with Sox, drove in 2 of 3 runs tonight. Guess he was pissed.
Tough nite for Durham. What happened to Mason this year?
He did
He’s like 30 pounds lighter than he was last year. He needs to go off the Miguel Cabrera’s mom Venezuela mama diet though.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
told you the umpires are after us
they are doing all they can to keep us from scoring runs. THAT WASNT EVEN CLOSE
Oof
He was safe by quite a bit, I’m suprised he beat the tag that bad; that was a really good throw.
You got 3 fucking catchers Joe
PR for that fat ass
Just out of curiosity were any of you the IT guy I saw in St. Pete today wearing the Longoria t-shirt?
I'm still pissed about that Bradford deal
Shame on us and the Sox. Any speculation on the PTBNL.
What pissed me off was McPhail’s comment about needing to see some other pitchers. I knew Rocky Cherry sucked, why doesn’t he?
