I'm not sure how to do these.

w/e you say RJ
it still adds up to bad baseball
In every baseball game I've ever played, Lyle Overbay has kicked my ass.
MVP Baseball, MLB 2k, The Show… Its weird.
I always love building a young cheap rotation the Show.

I was so confident they'd lose today and

Why is that/
Funny,
according to some around here, Aki is marginal at best.
by Vin on Sep 6, 2008 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions
He's not a bad player.
But I would take Mark Ellis over him if we could get trade Aki in a package for Mark Ellis.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 6, 2008 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions
He's not a lead off hitter
jis low OBP kills it
his OBP is above league-average (if you look at career numbers and not just 2008)
it’s slightly lower than Aki’s, but I’d rather not have either Aki or Ellis leading off.
plus, if we get rid of Aki, we don’t have to put his replacement in the leadoff spot. CC (assuming his on-base skills return) is a pretty good leadoff option. then BJ, then Pena, then Longoria, then Hinske/Floyd/otherDH or new power-hitting RF.
also, nobody’s claiming Ellis would make a good leadoff hitter — his additional value comes in the field, where he’s sick.
;)
Aki’s just about league-average overall, maybe slightly better. that definitely has value, but also leaves plenty of room for an upgrade
The thing I like most about Aki
is that he’s had at least a hit or a walk in 90% of the games he’s played this year.
by Vin on Sep 6, 2008 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions
i wonder what other players' %s are
of course, almost all his hits are singles. but yes, that’s nice.
The next closest is BJ at 83%
last time I checked.

When it's all said and done
Kaz, Price, Garza, Davis, Shields
What's the point in replying?
You’d say something stupid about how new-fangled stats don’t tell you anything then go on a rant about how AAA pitchers you know next to nothing about are proven winners.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 6, 2008 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions
So you are saying
basically Shields>Garza, Price and Davis
OK, i noted it
right now, Shields is better than Garza
but Garza has a much higher ceiling and should be moderately better the next year or two. i also think Kaz is below Shields currently.
This is how our threads go:
Me: Sir, if you take this pill you’ll live longer.
You: I don’t take pills. Fucking new fangled-medicine. How do you even know that shit works?
Me: Sir, studies have been done it and experiments and a ton of other stuff that pro…
You: LIVES AREN’T LIVED IN TEST TUBES!
Me: Fucking die then. Shit.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 6, 2008 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions
i'd add that the differences between the spots is important
there’s probably a gap after Garza and before Sonny. and all five pitchers should be at least #3’s in a typical rotation
and i disagree
he and Glaus have been just as valuable this year (Rolen’s fielding is awesome). and he’s locked up for two additional years at $11MM (which should be a good price — Rolen just has to be a win better than average to earn it). Glaus has an $11MM 2009 player option, which isn’t a good thing for a ballclub, because the only way a player exercises an option like that is when they aren’t worth it and can’t make more in free agency.
Glaus has been better offensively
But Rolen’s glove, which obviously isn’t what it used to be, is still good and probably makes it a wash. The Jays just happen to focus more on defense.

Strikeouts aren't bad luck most of the time.
He can’t lay off the curveball, you can’t defend his offensive futility my friend.
I never claimed strikeouts were bad luck.
I think it’s implied when I keep stating that his liners are being hit where people are, and that IS bad luck.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 6, 2008 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Can't blame bad luck all the time
I could say the same for Aybar for a few, but he looks overmatched at the plate, its really hard to watch him at the plate.
Aybar DID have bad luck.
He’s had like a .850 OPS since taking over for Longoria. It’s called progression to the mean.

yes on Aybar
He did a lot better job than I expected, its gonna be nice to get Longoria back in at 3rd with the smooth and quick delivery on defense though.
Yeah, I dunno
my hopes for him are dwindling. Given how godly Friedman is, I’m beginning to think that maybe it was less about Ruggiano being a dick, and more about him being a AAAA hitter.
by Vin on Sep 6, 2008 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I got an email back from Graham about if there is a scientific method to measuring line drives....
There is no strictly scientific way of differentiating between a line drive and a fly ball, which is done by trained scorers from MLB or STATs. However, you can be fairly sure that there’s a good consensus on what constitutes a line drive by looking at the variation in park effects – we see line drives getting called at essentially the same rate across MLB. The may be theoretical problems over tiny sample sizes (i.e. one start), but otherwise any fuzziness in the data evens out.
This may not be true for minor league data.
