What is Madden thinking?
Loyalty is one thing but throwing away a season on a broken down horse is another, think about all the other players on the team, don’t they deserve something?

Percy is a "veteran"
He has what it takes to lead us through the mythical journey that is September.
Veteran leadership = overrated as hell.

He's at the point where he's hurting the team more than helping it.
16BB/16K, 6HR, 7.10ERA, 7.5H/9 since the start of June.
That is exceptionally horrible.

To be fair, he pretty much struck out Rolen

Give Rolen a K and he’s still been miserable since the start of June

I'm not saying that Percy should be our closer. I don't think he should.
We should go to a closer by committee. First of all, it makes the most sense to not have our best relievers locked into a roll. Plus, unlike the Red Sox (they tried this, and it failed miserably), our relievers have shown that they are not affected by when they are used in the closers role or earlier in the game.
But it does matter within the context of this game.

i hate that phrase.
mostly because a closer isn’t important. instead of focusing on who closes on games, the focus should be on who the best reliever is and how you can use him the best.
but i agree, in the sense that in the ideal usage of our bullpen, there will be multiple relievers who earn saves the rest of the way. i just don’t want to talk about the saves

In the context of today's game, it is crucuial, and it takes runs off his ERA.
Umps get the call right, Rays win, we’re not having this conversation.

He's sucked for a while, but the point remains he was screwed on that call
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 6, 2008 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
So he got squeezed a little.
It’s not the first time that’s happened to a pitcher, and it definitely doesn’t mean you should throw this on your next pitch.

Also, if you’re going to excuse him because of the bad umpiring, you might as well excuse him for the Inglett error in the 9th. After all, this game shouldn’t have even gone into extra innings.

Ok, ok.
I guess it really doesn’t matter anyway.
I just feel like we’ve got another Brian Stokes situation. We’ve got a guy who simply isn’t good enough to be pitching in close games pitching in close games. Only this time there’s an obvious reason why Maddon won’t ever be asked to change Percival’s role. It fucking sucks.
by Vin on Sep 6, 2008 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well yes he should've gotten Zaun out because Zaun sucks.
But for today, he should’ve never been in that situation. It does matter that the umpires blow calls that easy.

dan wheeler should be the closer, but you go tell percy he is going to be a mid reliever
maybe percy this offseason will reliase that he doesnt have “it” anymore and will retire, we all knew that this was bound to happen soon (him getting lit up and surrending runs)

Who cares if they weren't trying to screw the Rays?
They blew it, and we have the technology to eliminate them blowing ball/strike calls completely. The 2.2 inch margin of error Pitch F/X has is smaller than any umpire alive’s margin of error. Yes, he just called it like he saw it. But he saw it like shit, and if we can get it right every time, why shouldn’t we? The players should decide the outcomes of the game, not the umpires.

i’ve lost a lot of respect for your insight into the game
by sternfan1 on Sep 6, 2008 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not saying that at all.
Percival being shitty and our offense not coming through lost us the game.
I still dislike human strikezones though, and that extends beyond one game.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 6, 2008 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I am on your side of the strikeaone issue
call the defined zone
None of this bs about low ball umps or high ball umps
Also why or how does a pitcher “earn” that call?
That’s BS
A strike is a strike no matter who is on the hill
by sternfan1 on Sep 6, 2008 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Which SHOULD mean you're for pitchfx
We’re not trying to dehumanize the game for the players, we’re trying to equalize it. As you said there’s no reason that certain pitchers should get an extra few inches because they’ve been around forever or are friendly guys. Pitchfx erases that bias and lets the players talents decide the strikes/balls.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 6, 2008 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, it only eliminates the umps control over balls/strikes.
He can still stand there to make safe/out calls and handle the lineup cards. He simply won’t be the final voice on balls and strikes.

Question for you. Not Rays related.
Florida plays Miami tonight. For whom do you root?
To put it succinctly, the City of Tampa is part of the Rays in name only. Start showing support for the community's team and that will change. The Rays are St. Petersburg's team and as long as they continue to win, they'll grow on America's hearts because everyone loves an underdog except front-running Tampa. They have the Yankees.

Of the Rays' 55 losses...
this one hurts THE most. More than any friggin other loss this year, this one’s gonna stick in my mind for a long time. Why? Well beyond the obvious in how it happened, if the Rays end up a game behind Boston, look back to 9/6/08 and there’s why.
Hopefully for me, Florida kicks Miami’s ass tonight so the day’s not a complete wash.
Go Rays, get ’em tomorrow and go into Boston and give ’em HELL!!!!!!
