What.
The Cardinals, Rays, Tigers, Indians and Cubs -- imagine a Carlos Marmol/K-Rod tandem for the eighth and ninth innings -- are also believed to be considering K-Rod as a target for 2009.
Per Jim Molony, via MLBTr. That seems, uh, odd. Rodriguez is going be looking for a huge payday. He has a history with Joe Maddon, but I would assume not enough of one that he would take considerably less money to join the Rays. Rodriguez is currently having one of the worst seasons of his career (3.5 tRA) despite the save totals and will almost certainly be overpaid on the market by a team like the Mets.

Count out the Rays, Cards and Indians
He wants Mo money, they won’t pay that
Jim Baloney doesn't make sense.
They have too much relief depth to go out and spend that kind of money on of all things, a closer. Wheeler’s shown this year that he’s capable of handling the job right now, Salas is still supposedly our closer of the future, and Balfour definitely has the stuff for it. There are more pressing needs on this team than a closer. A capable middle reliever, maybe, if they’re going to let Percy go or if he’s retiring, but the Rays have capable candidates for the closer’s job.
Its just specualtion...
The only team that we know, for sure, has interest in any specific players is that Yankees. And that’s just because ol’ Hank is a dumbass.
It’s pretty easy to link K-Rod to the Rays because of Joe Maddon, but I’m sure that’s where it ends. Unless Percival does the right thing and retires, we’re already set at closer for the 09 season.
The Yankees seem to take interest in anybody that is asking for tons of cash.
I’m pretty much convinced that they build their team around how much money they can spend and really don’t give a shit about depth anywhere. If it’s a big-name, high-priced free agent, the Yanks want’em, no matter how useless he is to their organization.
Overcompensation is a sum bitch

believed to be considering
If we break the bank on anyone this offseason, it will be on Burrell or Dunn.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Not a good idea.
Unless they’re going to take a 2 or mayyybe 3 year deal, I don’t think Dunn or Burrell is worth signing.

Burrell, yes. Dunn, no.
Unless you want to plug him into your DH. He is a liability in the OF, that can not be afforded.

Why not?
K-Rod would be a great guy to plug in after Percy is done, which could be this year. Will K-Rod want big time money? Yes. Can the Rays give him that? If you say “no” quickly, I think you are underestimating the Rays. With this year, the Rays FO are learning lessons that are going to really assist them for the upcoming years.
The Rays would make sense for guy writing a story in a cubicle because the “Maddon” connection. Other then that, people all across America are scratching their heads going “huh?”
I do strongly believe the Rays will be bigger players in the free-agent and trade markets tehy they were in years passed.

I'm not saying that they're not willing to throw cash at someone
But if they do, it shouldn’t be at a closer. Bullpen is not a weakness on this team (right now), and it won’t be even if Percival leaves. RF is a weakness (I don’t want to hear anything about a Baldelli/Gross platoon; I’ve never liked platoons, and I’m not going to start either). DH is a weakness. A case can be made that LF could use an upgrade. But pitching, and particularly the bullpen, is not. If they spend big money on K-Rod then they might as well get ready to not make the playoffs next year.
Carl Crawford says that LF is fine.
RF, you won’t hear an argument from me. In an ideal word, Rocco plays everyday and there is no issue. But then again my ideal would has $.50 gas and the Bucs, Bolts, Bulls, and Rays winning multiple championships.
DH, I am fine for now with a platoon. Although if a guy falls into our laps that would be servicible, I would so take that in a heartbeat.

With Penny, Maddux, and Lowe leaving as FA's
And the Dodgers wanting to resign Manny, I’ll be little surprised if we don’t work out a deal for Kemp or Ethier.

I would be fine with either of those gentlemen
It would surely cost Wade Davis to say the least.

So might Kemp/Ethier
As a platoon I think they would work fine but those lefty/righty splits feature big drops. If I had to pick only one it would be Kemp because we could use anybody that can hit lefties.
Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.
The drops arent that bad, are they?
Career OPS vs Lefty/Righty
Kemp: .913/.769
Ethier: .743/.841
but, yeah, I’d take Kemp too.

I don't know about that RJ.
Look at his last outing. He is getting it. He doing better at that AAA level then Price is. Not just on pure numbers but on location and mixing up the pitches.

Now I’m all hot and bothered.
