One Last Look At 2008

As we celebrate the New Year, here are a few things to remember about 2008:

  • James Shields's One-Hitter vs. Angels.
  • Matt Garza's One-Hitter vs. Marlins.
  • Matt Garza & James Shields's Two-Hitters.
  • "The Dan Johnson" Game.
  • Dan Wheeler in Game 2 of the ALCS.
  • Cliff Floyd's walk off home run vs. White Sox.
  • Gabe Gross's walk off hit vs. Mariano Rivera.
  • B.J. Upton's postseason HR's
  • Ben Zobrist's 7th inning solo HR vs the Blue Jays snapping the losing streak.
  • Rays score six runs in the bottom of the 9th to beat Cleveland.
  • Dioner Navarro's walk off single vs Boston and game winner vs Boston the following week.
  • Matt Garza in Game 7 of the ALCS.
  • And finally.........

2 run HR by Aki down one in the eighth against Red sox

I think it was Bucholz and he had a one hitter going.

My favorite moment.

It was the first game I had gotten my girlfriend to sit down and watch with me. Naturally she found it boring as all hell since it was a pitching duel. So the eighth inning rolls around and she finally asks, “Why isn’t anything happening?” And sure enough, the next at bat Aki mashes Buchholz’s curveball into the right field seats. That was when I knew it was going to be one hell of a great season.

The moment I realized this year was different

The chains of events in spring training with the Yankees and the fights really gave this team some kind of brotherhood that you see from championship teams. The Rays started spring training off with the best record and it was hard to think to yourself this could be the start of something special. It is highly cliche, but those scuffles in spring training and the Coco Crisp incident really made a statement that this team was not going to roll over and play dead like every Ray team before it.

I really enjoyed the Longo double at the All-Star game to tie it

That moment really sealed the deal in my mind that this kid wasn’t messing around.

… on a side note the picture of Price gets me wondering why anyone thinks it would be a good idea to have him start the season in Durham?

Nobody does.

Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.

I wouldn't mind it

If Niemann isn’t traded, he has to be on the 25 man roster and I’d rather have him in the rotation. Price does need to work on a change and I don’t want to see him have to go from bullpen then back to AAA to get stretched out because it will delay his time to get into the rotation.

Sonny's two hour masterpiece against the White Sox

Followed by wrestling and Jonny Gome’s trashcan routine.

In the same vein, Garza's 1-hitter against the Marlins

Watching him completely wreck that lineup with the exception of that one hit by Hanley Ramirez, who went all Vladamir-Gurrero-in-his-prime on a filthy breaking ball off his shoetops to put one over the fence. I really enjoyed watching that one.

Longo at bat where...

he fouled a pitch or two off his foot, pulled a would be home run just foul, then found the right timing and hit a homer and while leaving the batters box showed some emotion over the at bat.

Going to Yankee Stadium in April to see the Rays beat the Yanks

Being there for the Aki go ahead home run vs Boston in April

Being there for the playoff clinching game vs the Twins

Being directly down the left field line when Perez was tagging from third to score the winning run in Game 2 of the ALCS

Pacing back and forth in one spot from the second inning till the last out of Game 7 against Boston. Celebrating with the janitors when Price got the last out.

For me it was going to every single spring training game for the final season at Al Lang

Living 3 blocks from the park, I am still crushed that they are leaving.

Wow that must have been really nice.

I will miss Al Lang also. I liked the location with the water there and all.
