Obviously, there is not much science behind this, but I stumbled across this on Baseball Musings today and found it pretty interesting. If you don't visit their site you should make an effort as they have all kinds of great databases.

FWIW
Mariano Rivera has a career 719-132/.845 for the Yankees.
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.

I am guessing
that practically any closer would have similar stats as to his team’s record when he appears since he will only appear when they are already leading in the 9th inning. Of course the entire notion of considering a team’s record with or without a particular player is pretty close to meaningless.

On your first point
I think it would be interesting to compare them laterally across the position, hence throwing out Rivera’s numbers. On the second point, from a statistical standpoint there is so much noise that significance is impossible, but on the comparison side there is a ton of interesting trivia in this kind of data. I’m a big fan of trivia and history of baseball and I think this applies more to pitchers, because when I see something like the Phillies winning 2/3 of Steve Carlton’s starts my ears perk up a little bit. That is quite the accomplishment and I think it is cooler for other teams that have more than 10 years of data/players. It goes all the way back to 1957 so you can compare players that had great careers and played for great teams and see who might have a better legacy.
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.

Trivia is interesting
so long as it remains purely that. When people confuse the coincidences that are often the substance of trivia with cause/effect, it becomes misleading.
In this instance, I notice that in 2008, the Yankees had a better record when Melky Cabrera started than when Damon did. (.566-.524) For the Orioles, when Payton or Millar started they had a better record than when either Markakis or Roberts did. (.441 & .434 vs .427 & .413) It would be dangerous to draw any inferences let alone conclusions from such trivia.

I hope I don't come across as defensive,
but that was the point I was trying to impress when I said that there was very little science behind this kind of thing. Perhaps, I should have elaborated.
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.
