Of Rocco Baldelli and the Red Stinkers
My five year old daughter met Rocco Baldelli when she was two at Fan Fest and he signed a ball for her and held her for a picture. Since then she's been a big fan of his, often asking us if "Rocco is not sick any more" and always excited when she saw him play on TV. She would cheer like crazy if he got a hit.
Tonight while eating dinner my daughter said "I'm not going to root for Rocco anymore." My wife and I looked at each other puzzled and asked her why. Her response was "Because he doesn't play for the Rays any more, he plays for the Red Stinkers."
We both laughed hard and thought we'd pass the story on to you. She's one great kid!
Here's one of her pics with Rocco taken at Fan Fest few years back.

Cute kid
and smart if she knows it’s about the team and not one player
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.

Smart Kid.
Time to start educating her about the value of wOBA and FIP.
and how they are misleading at times and not always applicable
its very important you teach her that also ; )
And how to create a half dozen alternate accounts on baseball sites.

Who does that?...
"Don't test the cannon"! screamed Matt Garza after b.J. Upton throws another failed attempt of scoring by a tag-up!
I'm just going to say it. You're an idiot.

It's true though
Every baseball statistic has advantages and disadvantages; it’s important to know what they are so you know the data is actually saying what you think it’s saying. That holds true for all statistics. For whatever reason, it seems like a lot of sabermetricians get away from that.

This is one of those kinds of statements
that sounds as if it means something but really doesn’t. Of course any statistic is misleading sometimes and may not be applicable at times. That is true always and in all cases. And as Brickhaus says, of course some people sometimes misuse sabermetric information. Fortunately, by its very nature, there is generally some element of self-correction since the entire edifice is built on asking questions and being skeptical of final answers. Sometimes demographers misuse demographic information and economists misuse economic statistics and on and on. That does not in any way discredit the field itself.
One hopes we all bring up our children to be critical thinkers, which means remaining open to new ideas and new ways of thinking and retaining some measure of skepticism about all orthodoxies. To point out that progressive analysis may be misused or may be incomplete or continues to evolve is nothing more than that. But it certainly is not the same as suggesting to young minds that it is inherently flawed or should be disregarded. And it is certainly worthwhile to guide young minds to mistrust old saws that do not have evidence to support their claims.
The warning you suggest is inherent in sabermetric thinking. I don’t think it is welcome in traditional thinking.
Ambiguous comments are stupid. Don't make them.

I was trying to make a joke.
Not start a serious discussion about the value and merits of sabermetrics/statiscal analysis.
Now, back to the Red Stinkers.
No no, I was responding to Rays4242
You’re fine. Your post was humourous.

haha red stinkers
smart kid though, no rays fan should root for rocco anymore, if he went to any other team besides the yankees or the red stinkers, i wouldve been able to still root for him
TB Rays in 09!!!
I'll root for him to feel better and have a long life.
However I never ever root for anyone on any team that has an indirect impact on the Rays season.
ya i root for him off the off field
but i cant root for him on it,l at least when he is wearing that piece of shit jersey
TB Rays in 09!!!

Did they let you dress up as a furry
and let you go out on the town to do furry things?
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.
