Three Weeks Til Camp
Topkin's notes column:
President Matt Silverman said the Rays went from 300 spring training season-ticket holders in St. Petersburg to 3,000 in Port Charlotte.
Oh and:
Could Nick Markakis' six-year, $61 million deal with Baltimore be a benchmark for long-term talks with Upton?
Tommy discussed this a few days ago, for those who missed it.
Otherwise, Super Bowl talk with Joe Maddon.

Spring training
It is more difficult to get tickets where you want them this spring than in springs past.
Exactly, anyone not think ST season tickets wouldn't have skyrocketed if the Rays moved it to the swamp?

?
Do you mean they would have skyrocketed even if they’d stayed in St. Pete? Also confused because to me, there is only one swamp, and it’s in Gainesville.

The Everglades isn't really a swamp
and The Swamp is in the middle of a prairie.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
I'm from NY. I've been to Sanibel Island in Florida, but nowhere else. I'm bad at geography.
Does that explain my ignorance?
But yes, I’m saying ST season tickets would have skyrocketed if they’d stayed in St. Pete. Not saying they’d be as high, but seriously now.

Definitely
The best seats, even for their ‘road’ games in Bradenton and Dunedin are spoken for…but at least you can still get a seat-back.

I'm probably going to see them in Bradenton or Dunedin instead
Tickets are more plentiful, and it’s a much shorter drive.
But their stadium is nice. It was one of my favorite places when the Rangers played there, so I assume it’s only gotten nicer.

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I’m so excited, and I just can’t hide it
Sorry about the size but I just had to slip this in:

DEFEND IT
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.

I’ve said that many a time.

Keeping what i consider the core
together beyond 2010 will be a real challenge
Hopefully revenues will make a $90 million dollar payroll a reality
Is the goal to keep the core together or to keep winning?
I mean, it’s ideally both, but what if you had the choice of one or the other?
Beyond the Boxscore // Calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy.
Good question
but i think some risks will be taken
We need more impact positional players
Pena and Crawford are approaching the point of possible diminishing returns
Ideally the 4+ win players come via trade or draft.
We’ll never be able to pay market value for those types on the market.

Topkin also mentions Navarro's arbitration case
And talks about about the deals that Buck and Martin received last season…wonder where he got that from.
