Last Call for DH Preferences/Bets
The Rays' last remaining move this winter is to acquire a designated hitter to replace Cliff Floyd, who became a free agent and is leaning toward retirement. They've been linked to a number of veteran hitters on the free-agent market, including Bobby Abreu, Garret Anderson, Pat Burrell, and Jason Giambi.

Here's some reading material to answer anything else you needed to know.

Burrell by far
Unless we go after Dunn, then it would be close.

Last move is signing a DH?
Hardly. I really feel like the Rays need to sign another lefty for the ’pen. Ohman or Ledezma would work for me. Ledezma would obviously come a lot cheaper than that of Ohman.

Nelson handles lefties very well
And where would the lefty fit in? Niemann is out of options.

See.
I am a huge Niemann fan, and I obviously don’t want to see him DFA’d. Nelson, however, is going to be pitching in the AL East, against the likes of tough lefties such Ortiz and Teixeira. I guess they could probably get Ledezma for a minor-league deal, with an invite to Spring Training. Still, I think the Rays need another lefty in the bullpen.

I would be completley against trading Niemann for a good return
and signing a lefty.
Argh, why didn’t you retire Percy!

We need a few lefties near the top of the organization in general.
Heath Phillips left. That leaves us with Houser, Jino Gonzalez, Carlos Hernandez, and org filler as the only lefties near the top.

mcgee
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.

Very intriquing as a RP
but he had control issues BEFORE the injury, big concerns around him.

D-Rod is death to lefties.

signing a DH is the last addition we need to make
but I could see the Rays trading a couple of players (Gross, Wheeler) to acquire some prospects and then maybe sign a lefty reliever

order for me would be
Dunn
Burrell
Abreu
Giambi
I’d be happy with any of them

+1
on the Dunn first
I’d probably switch Abreu and Burrell, but Burrel will probably come at a better price

No concern about Burrell hitting AL East pitching???

Burrell scares me
because of his streakiness. In a perfect world, Im voting for Dunn. Younger and madly consistent. Still dont know how he would adjust to the AL and leaving a hitters park in CIN. Tropicana, from what I understand, is a pretty nuetral park. I wonder if he is still good for 40 jacks with the Rays, considering he has hit exactly 40 every year since 04. I would expect Pena type numbers from him, low BA, high OBP, 35-40 HR and 100+ RBI

but Dunn is very unlikely
After Bowden officially loses another battle and Bradley goes to the Cubs, he will make sure he gets Dunn.

Pros and Cons
Dunn
Pros: Most power, youngest, high OBP
Cons: Tons of Ks, low BA, left handed, slow, struggles against LHP
Burrell
Pros: Good power, increased walk rate, mashes LHP
Cons: Streaky, poor defensively, low BA
Abreu
Pros: excellent plate discipline, hits RHP and LHP well, still has some speed
Cons: declining BB and K rate, afraid of walls, declining power, old
Giambi
Pros: Good power, great LHOPS for a LHB, good plate discpline
Cons: low BA, complete defensive liability, gay porn star mustache

I'm starting to buy into Abreu more.

I agree
The only sexy thing he doesnt have going for him is HR, but he makes up for that with 40+ doubles every year.

As much as I like seeing homers
and would love Dunn adding his 40 homers to the team, we have plenty of power in a healthy Upton, a more advanced Longoria, Pena and potentially Joyce.

Plus like I said
Abreu still gets 40+ doubles a year. A guy like Giambi may hit more home runs, but only hits around 20 doubles. So you may get 10+ extra homers from Giambi, but 20+ doubles from Abreu in addition to 20-30 SB.

Where do I sign?
I really hope he has lowered his demands a lot.
