The Rays, looking to fill their need for a power hitter, are close to signing free-agent Pat Burrell to a two-year, $16 million contract, according to major-league sources. <!-- ========== LINKS ========= -->Burrell, 32, spent his first nine seasons with the Phillies, batting .250 with 33 homers and 86 RBIs in 2008 and helping the team win the World Series.
It'd be awesome if we get this done, and the price looks right to me.

8 mil a year and only 2 years is such a great deal
its almost hard to believe. We are financially managing this team as good as you possibly can its very exciting and will enable us to do mor eand more things if/when we want to (like extending BJ or signing another mid level FA)
So that is 8 Mil that will already be off the books when it comes time to give the king his crown out in CF.
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.
