Rays/Burrell Close to 2 Year 16 Mil Deal

So reports Ken Rosenthal.  We've discussed Burrell and the other options to the finite detail over the past few months, and today we see the apex of the Rays search for a designated hitter. The following was posted on FanGraphs about a month ago.

We know that Burrell is 32 years old and hit for his lowest wOBA since 2004. Part of that should be credited to an unlucky BABIP, and perhaps a slightly down walk rate. Burrell did increase his ISO and even if you park adjust his numbers, he was still above average. Perhaps not surprisingly, Burrell is a player who actually gains value by moving to hitting full time. The major defensive metrics all reach the same conlusion: Burrell in left field is a really bad experience. The most generous, Chone, had Burrell at -14 runs, meanwhile UZR at -14.7 runs, PMR at -19.89 runs, and Dewan's +/- at -20 plays, or -16 runs.

That's an average of -16.15 runs, combine that with the positional adjustment of -7.5 and you're looking at his offensive value being zapped. As DH Burrell gets penalized -17.5 runs. 23.65-17.5 is a 6.15 run swing, in other words, Burrell gains a half of a win by simply tucking his glove in a dark corner. That's a substantial amount when you consider the DH positional penalty is trying to punish, not improve player value.

Marcels has Burrell continuing his slide (mostly age related) and slipping to .369 wOBA, or 18.7 offensive runs above average in 582 plate appearances. That makes him worth between 1.8 and 2 WAR. If Burrell can find a way into 645 plate appearances like 2008, raise those expectations to 2-2.2. That suggests Burrell should be worth between 9 to 11 million.

The Phillies chose against offering Burrell arbitration, meaning no draft picks will exchange hands. Certainly a pro, but there are some cons to signing Burrell as well. Most of those are associated with his age and potential for a quick collapse in skills. Any team desiring to add Burrell should attempt a contract covering one or two seasons. This would allow Burrell to test the market again before his mid-30's, and gives the team a chance to avoid Burrell's eventually collapse.

Seems like we signed Burrell very cheap, considering the stupid Phillies replaced him for nearly twice as much with Raul Ibanez

If we trade Gross and his salary, and sIgn Baldelli we really wouldnt be spending any extra money it would be Burrell + Rocco = 8-10 mil

unless his diagnosis has changed

which Im still not sure about those reports, but if they are true then this change sthings completely as far as what we knew before and how we viewed him and how we might view him now

If his diagnosis hasnt really changed, then I understand if we had no interest. If it has, then it would make sense to have some level of interest. Why do you say he need sto sign with the Reds RJ?

by Rays4242 on Jan 5, 2009 2:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

maybe thats true

but we know how much we would ask him to play, and it wouldnt be much anyways

So if his diagnosis has changed (no way for us to know, there is a way for our FO to know) then its is completely reasonable to assume he could platoon with Joyce and come off the bench mostly

by R.J. Anderson on Jan 5, 2009 3:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

ok

I just give Baldelli credit for knowing all the angles, tracking balls quickly, and IMO (I know this is highly debated in the past) has a strong arm

Perez > Baldelli in teh field though I can agree to that

I dont think one has anythign to do with the otehr though. I would want Baldelli to replace Gross whom would be stealing most of the playing time from Perez anyways in RF. I want Baldelli because he is a legit RH bat off teh bench. What do you think about Perez starting in AAA? is that necessary in your eyes?

by Rays4242 on Jan 5, 2009 3:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know about that

Perez is going to be 26 next year. I doubt the Rays gain a long-term benefit by leaving him in AAA at this point. Either he’ll sink or he’ll swim. He’s not going to become an impact hitter either way, and he’s not going to stop being a good leadoff or #8/9 type option if he gets limited at-bats.

So you’re telling me if his diagnosis has changed and he hits 20 HR 80 RBI and bats .300 playing half the games in the field, you wouldnt change your opinion about the time to move on? Are you just basing this off of his prior diagnosis and constantly getting hurt without taking into account all the things taht can change

have absolutely nothign to do with a new diagnosis

in fact, if he does have a new diangosis it would be rather silly to keep him the past 3-4 years only to let him go now

You still havent shown how it is "time to move on" with any certainty, that was the purpose of my postingt that

to show how wrong it is to say “NOW is that time to move on” as if it is a sealed deal that Baldellis body is made of glass and he will never stay healthy

If you call a new, treatable diagnosis “conjecture” then maybe you just dont believe in modern science I really dont know what to tell you

This could definitely be the time to go our seperate ways, Im not saying it isnt. Im saying how do you know with certainty?

I don't understand why you're making more of my comment than is there.

“Time to move on” != “LOL OMG ROCCO IS TEH SUX”

That means “The Rays should probably have a better option than Rocco in place if they’re planning to platoon with Joyce.”

It’s the same thing I’ve been saying all season. He’s extremely unreliable and this new diagnosis will have to prove me wrong before I change my view.

Burrell vs. DH last year

Last year the DH spot had a wOBA of .327. Burrell had a wOBA of .374. Over these 645 PAs, he would produce 26 more offensive runs. In other words, he’s a 2.6 run upgrade over what we had at DH last year.

One thing I just want to point out

I can pretty much guarantee that Burrell would end up playing 100 – 200 ABs in the field. The way Maddon likes tinkering with lineups, it seems almost unreasonable to assume that he wouldn’t have him playing RF or LF from time to time. That would eat into some of his value.

him playing 100-200 ABs in the field would be stupid

with gross and perez being able to play out there, and even zobrist to play out there as well

I liked Burrell better than Bradley to begin with

I know I’m in the minority here, but someone who’s inconsistent other than that he’s consistently injured doesn’t excite me too much. Plus, Bradley + Pinella should be a fantastic comedy team.

I'm just going to keep posting this until someone aknowledges how HUGE it is:
Last year the DH spot had a wOBA of .327. Burrell had a wOBA of .374. Over these 645 PAs, he would produce 26 more offensive runs. In other words, he’s a 2.6 run upgrade over what we had at DH last year.

I will make two predictions

1. Pat Burrell will drive everyone crazy at least twice this year with extended slumps.

2. Just about everyone will be happy with his final stat-line and production.

Uh, Seattle would’ve made sense. Boston’s out. Milwaukee probably doesn’t want him back. Oakland doesn’t need him. San Diego doesn’t need him.

That's what happens when you get Friedman'd

Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.

probably Burrell. Pena never gets moved lower than 4th it seems, and he shouldnt because of his OBP. Same goes for Upton

which shows it may have some value as a motivational tool even if the statistical outcomes are insignificant
