My favorite quote from the article
" Willy Aybar (another switch-hitter who can fake a few infield positions)."

Not that this is at all likely
but since we signed Burrell for 2/16 would you be ok if we signed Abreu for 1 year and 8 mil to play RF?
Defense would be an issue, but it seems within our budget and this lineup looks good enough to almost make me ok with Abreu’s defense…
1- Crawford
2- Abreu
3- Upton
4- Pena
5- Longoria
6- Burrell
7- Navi
8- Aki
9- Bartlett

only reason I ask is because Burrell's contract is so reasonable
and trading Gross would make our budget look even better

Abreu was a ~1 WAR player last year.
Gross was 2.1.
Defense is 50% of a player’s game. If that 50% is almost as bad as the other 50% is good, that player is pretty meh.

Hardly
If defense is 50% of a player’s value, then the calculation is wrong.

Huh
What you wrote above isn’t exactly clear, but then again, neither is what I wrote. There are two halves to winning – scoring runs and preventing runs. Scoring runs = Batting. Preventing runs = Fielding + Pitching. Thus, batting has to have a greater effect (overall) than fielding, unless you completely ignore the pitching part of the equation.

Oh, okay I see what you thought I meant.
You’re absolutely right. I think 35% of the prevention is pitching (or thereabouts) I’m talking about in player value.

one thing though
wasnt Abreu statistically a much better fielder (still below average) in 2007? Or was he pretty much the same?
I know his arm is not his problem, hes always had a pretty good one from what I remember.
