We can all assume that Howell is starting in the pen.

Now that Burrell has signed, this is what I was looking forward to talking about next
Things to discuss: should the Rays trade Wheeler or Bradford, better yet, which one could they actually get value for, should the young arms with options even be considered, and lastly, are there any bullpen arms the Rays should be looking to acquire through FA or a trade.
I still would really love if we were somehow able to trade Wheeler to a team looking for a veteran pitcher with late-game experience, but willing to give up a young and talented, yet unproven, bullpen arm with options left. I rememeber Friedman talking about how they would look to get someone with whom they had that option. RJ brought up a great example in Sergio Romo with the Giants weeks ago. Any other ideas?

I would think
St Louis would fit that idea.
Motte or Perez come to mind. Those two might be a little out of range though.

Shouldn't we also consider Orvella and Ryu?
.. as:
- Friedman and Maddon left Ryu on the 40-man when they could have given Morlan a place on it. So … they may think he is good enough to make the pen as he is out of options!
- Orvella was really, really good in the minors (133 hits allowed in 202 innings, 6:1 K/BB ratio!!!)! I don’t know how much he degressed in ’08 because of health issues / injuries … do u know?

I really
think that all 15 of these guys can be in a major league bullpen.
I’d personally go (with the options we have now)
Troy Percival (lets face it)
Dan Wheeler (I hope he gets dealt for relief, but I doubt it)
Chad Bradford (I think I would rather have chadford than wheeler, but they could both get dealt and I wouldn’t cry over it)
J.P. Howell (little to no chance hes not in)
Grant Balfour (nothing to suggest a regression, but it has to happen, its just ridiculous to think he could put up the same season again, right?)
Joe Nelson (we signed him to be on the major league team, I think hes in as well)
Jeff Niemann (long man, out of options, could we get value for him? I’d personally like to see him at #5 in the rotation and Price in AAA until June, working on his change-up more, but I doubt it happens with the all the hype around Price)
Randy Choate (lots of ground balls, I think he is guaranteed a spot if Chadford is dealth because of the extreme groundball tendencies. I could see Rodriguez or Hammel in this role because of the need for lefty specialist and the options issue respectively)
——————————————————————————————————
I’d like to see
Balfour
(Bradford)
Howell
Nelson
(Wheeler)
Niemann
(Percival)
Choate
Hammel
Salas
Thayer
Rodriguez
Orvella
DePaula
Ryu
Childers
Talbot (I’d rather see him starting in AAA)
as my “depth chart” with the guys in parenthesis as guys who could (I know percival wont be dealt but still) be dealt for salary

Niemann
You don’t want Jeff coming out of the bullpen. I go frequently to Durham Bulls games, as I live a few miles from the park. Niemann takes a looooong time to warm up and is usually mediocre until 2-3 innings into his starts. He’s best suited as a 4 or 5 starter.
I don’t know that they’d get much trade value for him. The Phillies need a 4 and 5 starter and have 2 closers (and one guys who loved closing in Brett Myers). If the Rays could live with getting Tom Gordon for Niemann, that would work for both teams. A ho-hum closer for a ho-hum starter.
The worst thing to happen to Price isn’t the hype, it’s the success of the Rays. If the Rays were a middle of the pack team for another year, he could have spent a year at Durham working on his pitches and been called up late season with a better arsenal of pitches. That said, David Price is phenomenal and I doubt he’ll suffer any long term setbacks for being “rushed” to the bigs.

How I see it, assuming 8 spots
Howell, Balfour, and Nelson seem like sure things. Based on what I’ve seen and know, I think Choate has been pegged as this team’s LOOGY so I’d say he’s in too. I think Niemann makes the most sense as a long reliever/spot starter. Obviously, that leaves Percival, Wheeler, and Bradford as the three expensive guys. If Perci starts on the DL, maybe Jason Hammel stays until he gets back; otherwise I don’t know how the Rays could hold onto him. I see no way that he fits into someone’s long-term plans, and I don’t see how a Rays team that wants to win dumps Bradford exclusively for salary reasons being on the last year of his contract; if they trade him, I’d think they’d want to get major-league ready players in return, not prospects (If they can find a taker for Wheeler on the other hand, I think they’d take whatever they can get). But honestly, I don’t see either being moved. So:
Percival
Wheeler
Bradford
Nelson
Choate
Balfour
Howell
Niemann
Hammel is released or traded for a tank of oxygen, Rodriguez doesn’t make the squad, and the rest of the guys either go back to, or start in, AAA.
Just for S&G, if we go with 7 relievers, Choate probably starts down in AAA until the team can find a spot for him.
by kericr on Jan 7, 2009 9:43 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I can't imagine the team starting with 8 relievers
Unless they send Sonnanstine or Price down to AAA for a few weeks because only 4 starters are needed for most of April.

To clarify
We need 13 guys on offense, period.
- 9 main lineup guys
- backup catcher
- Platoon RF
- Backup MIF
- Backup CIF
I guess you can get away with having Aybar or Zobrist backing up the entire infield, but either one of those would be an ugly sight.

If we had a DH who could field
or if we had a RF who could hit lefties, then maybe we could get away with 12 position players.

You think we have less roster-flexibility this year?
If I remember correctly we had 8 in the pen most of last year.

I think you remember incorrectly.

FWIW
We alternated between having 6 and 7 most of the year, depending on various factors:
Percival (injured on and off though, sometimes replaced, sometimes not)
Wheeler
Howell
Miller
Hammel
Reyes (early in the year) / Balfour (replaced Reyes)
Glover for about half the year / Bradford at the very end of the year

How long is Juan Salas a Ray?
He pitched decent in 07 even after being suspended. I think he has outgrown the minors and hasn’t got a chance to return to Rays for an extended period. I don’t think he has much trade value by himself.
by therayspartyleader on Jan 7, 2009 9:53 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
He has outgrown the minors, in the sense that he's fat
Like, he was really out of shape last year. He never looked horrible while he was out on the mound in the majors despite this, but the Rays were so gun-shy about putting him out there that it makes me wonder what’s up.
by kericr on Jan 7, 2009 10:02 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
They were very timid to put him in close games
doesn’t make sense to me why they would keep him and not use him in what is suppose to be his role in the bullpen, setup man.

Maybe we could get Ugueth Urbina to light a fire under his ass
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.

Any early ideas on whether Wheeler/Percy/Chadford
would be type A/B next year? Maybe some incentive to hold onto the contracts for now.
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.

It would be pretty sweet to have the 30th and 31st picks next year

Wheeler as a type B would net more like the 60th pick. 31st pick would be for a top Type A free agent signed by a team in the top 15.

Would they trade a Bradford or
Wheeler, and sign Beimel?

I'd go with no,
but predicting Andrew Friedman is as tough as winning the AL East.
