Dayton Moore is the New Chuck LaMar
To quote Dave Cameron:
Kyle Farnsworth - 2 years, $9 million, 2006 to 2008: 0.1 wins above replacement
Mike Jacobs - 1 year, $3.5 million, 2006 to 2008: 0.7 wins above replacement
Horacio Ramirez - 1 year, $1.9 million, 2006 to 2008: 0.2 wins above replacement
Willie Bloomquist - 2 years, $3 million, 2006 to 2008: 0.3 wins above replacement
That's 17.4 mil for 1.3 WAR. Oh my.
At least the next KC GM will have a good farm system.

Give us Beltre and we'll give you him and Akinori.
I’m pretty sure Beltre or Evan could man second for a year.

Beltre's defense > Longo's defense
So you’d probably want to rotate him to second.
Zobrist would fit in pretty well with the new Seattle regime. I know he’s pretty good defensively. He has some pop, right?

At least TBS will shower him with praise when the Royals win the 2014 pennant
Throw in $12 mil. for Jose Guillen and you’ve outspent the 2008 Marlins on five players who collectively add less than 2 WAR?

In a vacuum it's okay.
But they had Kila, Shealy, Gload, and Butler all ready. Jacobs isn’t much better than any of them, and they gave up a decent middle reliever in the process.

Im not sure
Gload is decent but not much of a starter, Shealy has had ups and downs with his development, and I dont know anything about Kila other than he was drafted out of HS 7 years ago in the 15th round, has only 21 ML ABs and never played higher than AA ball. Maybe he is a good prospect though, I really dont know
I think it is a considerable upgrade adding Jacobs, just because I dont think Shealy and Butler are safe options/locks as everyday 1B/DH looking to the future, and maybe throwing a lefty (Jacobs) in the mix from an NL team where he sucked with the glove but was a good bat will turn into a nice 3 player rotation at 1B/DH
Nunez was great, and is young and improving butu mayeb they thought he was expendable because of who else they have. I really dont know but trading a DH for a RP seems pretty even, in a vacuum

Well and they should be able limit Jacobs seeing LHP.
And his .273 OBP against them over the last three years. Butler will be their lefty-masher 1B/DH flavor.

You shouldn't need (or want) three mediocre 1B/DH types.
Those are the two easiest positions to play. A straight up platoon makes sense, and they could’ve had that for half of what they’re paying Jacobs. Let’s see here:
Mike Jacobs – 1 year, $3.5 million, 2006 to 2008: 0.7 wins above replacement
Ross Gload – 2 years, $3.2 million, 2006 to 2008: -0.5 wins above replacement
Ryan Shealy – pre-arbitration, $400k, 2006 to 2008: 0.8 wins above replacement
Billy Butler – pre-arbitration, $400k, 2007 to 2008: 0.6 wins above replacement
There’s something wrong there, well, about 6 million things wrong there.
Jacobs best case is improving on 2008, but his true talent level is like: ~4 batting runs, -5 fielding runs, ~17 replacement, and as a DH make that -5 disappear, and instead charge -17.5. That leaves us at:
4+17-17.5
21-17.5 = 3.5 runs.
Divide that by 10 to gets wins and you have a 0.35 WAR designated hitter. The spot where you should have the worst fielder/best hitter. Jacobs SHOULDN’T be the best hitter, and he SHOULDN’T be the worst fielder, I guess he uses an oven mitt at first.
For comparison, let’s throw Brendan Harris at DH. That would be silly right? I mean, who would put a shortstop at DH?
Over the last three years Harris has had batting runs of -1.2, 3.4, and -4.2, average of -3, we’ll go with that. Throw out his fielding, make his positional -17.5 and you get:
-3-17.5+17
-20.5 + 17
-3.5 runs
Divide by 10
-0.35 wins
The difference between Mike Jacobs at DH and Brendan Harris is less than a win.
And we were using Mike Jacobs best season.

No question it was some poor management.
Butler seemed to be heating up at the end of last season, I could see him taking over DH on a full-time basis if he shows that he can hit RHP.
Dayton Moore also said after signing Bloomquist that he was an “On-Base guy” and used the word “hustle” twice.

I just think Jacobs and Butler will play off of eachotehr well, and alleviate some pressure from eachother
and I dont see any other strong options for 1B/DH

They're a 75-80 win team.
DH/1B don’t need to be filled by good players, the energy should be focused on the hardest positions. So Rafael Furcal, for instance. If they offer him the money they spent on these players, does he sign there? Maybe, maybe not, but that would’ve been better than these moves.

how can you accurately assess Jacobs WAR when he is switching from the NL to a DH position?
sorry for my ignorance but I dont understand all those calculations, all I know is JAcobs had a .857 OPS vs righties last year and Butler had a .985 OPS vs lefties
Im not sure that they will be mediocre. I know DH is an easy position to fill, but RPs dont exactly account for many wins eitehr if Ive learned anything about WAR. Also, we know most RPs are hard to project from year to year although you have to give Nunez some added value for being only 25 and improving each of the last 2 years.
I mean I could definitely see how KC could lose on this deal, but I think Jacobs could be a nice addition to a lineup that needs his bat WAY more than Florida did.

Players hit worse as DHs.
That’s why the positional adjustment is only -17.5 instead of -22.5.
You can take a few runs off for a league switch too, but I figured I’d be generous in my napkin calculations.
And Nunez isn’t overly valuable, but neither is Jacobs.

Yes,
but for 2 years at $3 million when you claim to have limited resources? That might make sense to a team already competitive and flush with cash, but what sense is there in overspending for your 25th man when you are not yet a contender? It is kind of like the discussion on Rays’ boards in 2006-2007 when some fans wanted the Rays to spend millions for middle relievers. Note that in 2008 the Rays did just that in getting Bradford, a move that would have been stupid in 2006.

Quote of the day from Neyer:
“But of course this is one of the things foolish organizations do: They complain that they can’t afford good players after spending millions of dollars on not-good players.”
So true.
