OTTOTD: The snotgreen sea. The scrotumtightening sea.
Ulysses towers over the rest of Joyce's writings, and in comparison to its noble originality and unique lucidity of thought and style the unfortunate Finnegans Wake is nothing but a formless and dull mass of phony folklore, a cold pudding of a book, a persistent snore in the next room, most aggravating to the insomniac! I am. Moreover, I always detested regional literature full of quaint old-timers and imitated pronunciation. Finnegans Wake's façade disguises a very conventional and drab tenement house, and only the infrequent snatches of heavenly intonations redeem it from utter insipidity. I know I am going to be excommunicated for this pronouncement.

Where the fuck is everybody.
If the Bucs give up on Josh Johnson after one more game, I’m going to blow up the Ray Jay.
Start preparing for it. We both know it's happening.
www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer
I'm not saying Johnson has been good - you don't rack up a 56% completion rate by accident - the positives outweigh the negatives.
He needs atleast two or three more games to prove he can cut down on the bad decisions and the erratic accuracy. Also, it’d be nice if his defense would give him the ball back after he makes a mistake instead he being pounded into the ground for 8 minutes.
I agree. Johnson has shown enough at times to give you idea of what he can do. Why not give the young'una chance
www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer
He's oozing with talent. Some of his throws have been just fantastic, he's a pocket passer with great mobiltiy, he's mature and hardworking. There's a lot to love.
Trying to squeeze throws between the corner and the safety (or on Sunday’s case, between a linebacker and a safety) is not wise, though. I don’t think they were neccessarily bad reads – maybe the Panthers one because he had a defender in his face – but he’s gotta learn that is not a high percentage throw. I’m not sure the offense has been designed to help him, though. Where in Christ is the shotgun? You’ve got a mobile quarterback – spread the field, give him a little extra time to read the defense, run more draws and screens. On the flip side, we seem to run WR screens awfully well – mad props to our wide receivers’ blocking and Sammie’s niftyness.
Also, thank Christ Jeremy Stevens is seeing less time. There isn’t a more useless player in the NFL. Putting him on the field is inviting the other team to blitz. If he’s in pass protection, he’s a complete liabiltiy, and he’s so inconsistent as a receiver he’s not a threat.
His throw to Winslow was pretty ridiculous.
by R.J. Anderson on Oct 19, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Word. He's killed on crossing routes, and the Clayton scramble-first down throw was superb.
But, sometimes his mechanics act up – I’m not sure if it’s his footwork or just how he holds the ball – and you get throws like the complete miss to Sammie that would have kept the drive alive.
Are the fumbles more of the OL's fault for allowing pressure too quickly, or Johnson being willy-dilly with the ball?
by R.J. Anderson on Oct 19, 2009 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions
The end of the game was predictable, practically preordained.
Really, you don’t want Josh to toss the ball up like that, but he was immediately under duress and it was a last hurrah anyway.
The fumble he made while scrambling was on him. He’s got to hold the ball tighter – teams are going to see the way he runs on film and start trying to punch the ball out every time he scrambles.
The Derrick Ward fumble was on Ward. Yes, there was penetration (I’d have to re-watch it, but I think it was more of a scheme issue than an execution issue), but the toss itself was fine – Ward has to hang on.
Tomorrow.
I wanted to put it up today, but I didn’t have time to do any type of break down last night. I’ll probably take a look at the last Panthers’ drive, set up the blog and post it tomorrow.
Keri never really got around to giving me the info for the actual .com, so succaneers.com itself probably won’t be up for a little while, but a Succaneers blog will be up tomorrow.
Too busy rimming his sister out.

right side of the line blocks better on runs. YPC and Avg Run yards are higher per FO.
www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer
I think a huge part of that is pulling Zuttah to that side.
This isn’t backed up by any hard evidence at the moment, but it seemed like we were much more effective running the ball when we started pulling our guards, which is something I think we had gotten away from in the past.
He's been in the shotgun a fair amount and likes to hold the ball too long
but he does some things that make you want to give him a chance to see what he can do with some experience (and good players around him)
www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer
We don't have the coaches tape, so I don't know if we're missing out on some hidden yardage, but if JJ's holding onto the ball too long in the pocket, it's probably because the receivers aren't getting open.
He does need to be more ready to throw it away when he drifts out of the pocket, though.
I can count at least 4 receivers he missed
He missed Graham twice and Caddy once for about 8 yards with no one within 10 yards of them. They were completely open but he never made it there in progressions.
www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer
I'll check it.
Like I said, he hasn’t been perfect, but I think he’s given us a better chance to win than Leftwich, and he deserves to continue playing.
I believe the play I'm referring to was a 3rd down play in the 3rd quarter
The Bucs were out of field goal range (it was 3rd and long) and I doubt Graham would have picked up the first down, but would have definitely put us in FG range. We ended up punting and it rolled to the 4.
Graham would have been on JJ’s blindisde if that helps.

I might be a bit off, but I believe it was 51k for USF and 44k for the Bucs. The entire 3rd tier was basically empty. 75% of the seats were empty up top. The club section had about 25% of the seats free of anyones butt.

Who leads the NFL in receiving yards?
Answer: Hines Ward (time to sell before it gets cold boys)

If Roth continues to throw as much as he is
then I can see Hines keeping up a pretty good pace. I wouldn’t sell unless you were getting good value in return.
He won't
HInesWard Field suffers as the season wears on. Also gets tougher to throw in the northern cities the Steelers play in. Hes traditionally between 900-1100 yards. I suspect he will end around 1100.

Gaines had zero professionalism and that was obvious even in college.

There are positions where you can better get away with that characteristic
DE is not one of them

I'm not a defender of Adams, I think the guy was a joke
I thought that back when we drafted him, I thought that back when he played at Clemson. He was a one trick pony in college and that trick doesnt translate to the NFL
www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer
He was hella toolsy, let's not kid ourselves.
He had a nice variety of pass rushing moves, but he could never stop the run, and that and the effort issues were the problems coming out.
Officially now the head of the Lobstein bandwagon.
I don't think he had a variety of pass rushing moves unless you count
run fast to the outside and run faster and further upfield as two separate moves.
www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer
I've seen him use a nice rip before
Perchance, what do you think of Selvie as a prospect?
Personally I wouldn’t touch him until the 3rd.
Officially now the head of the Lobstein bandwagon.
Selvie's a first rounder.
Really, really unpolished, but he has the instincts, athletic tools and his game is based off of strength as much as speed. And he’s performed, where as a lot of these flashy defensive ends with impressive sack totals really haven’t performed.
Please excuse my verbage, but are you on fucking crack?
He’s a 6’ 5’’ 245 lb pass rusher who only has a speed move and a good motor.
Officially now the head of the Lobstein bandwagon.
Every time I watch Selvie, he spends as much time directly attacking the tackle as running by/around.
As a situational pass rusher, he's great. That's not worth a 1st round pick.
Officially now the head of the Lobstein bandwagon.
For the record, Selvie bullrushed 16 out of 19 times against FSU and held FSU to 6 yards on 6 runs directly at him.
He also got double-teamed for 60% of FSU’s plays. He also made 5 splash plays – the top NFL players make 2.5 a game.
This doesn't change that it was against FSU's undersized OLineman and he has trouble putting on weight at 245.
Officially now the head of the Lobstein bandwagon.
Except for the fact that it addressed every single criticism aside from 245, which isn't likely to be an issue.
There have been a lot of successful pass rushers at the weight and if he is incapable of putting on extra, he can be moved off the line, ala Demarcus Ware, Shawne Merriman, any number of other “undersized” defensive ends who have become dominant linebackers.
So where all the numbers?
He has an extremely talented class behind him. Where’s the production?
Officially now the head of the Lobstein bandwagon.
5 splash plays in 22 snaps.
The elite NFL pass rushers cause 2.5 splash plays ina bout 40 snaps.
5 runs against him at the point of attack, 6 yards.
Double teamed 60% of the time.
19 sacks in two years.
Really? You’re questioning Selvie’s production?
When a defender makes a play that negatively affects the outcome of a passing play.
Selvie against Florida State:
Throwaway forced
Sack
Offensive holding penalty
Pressure
Chop block penalty
Good job being on the size that has a chop block being equal to a sack.
Officially now the head of the Lobstein bandwagon.
...One can be an OLineman's mistake, the other takes Defensive skill.
Officially now the head of the Lobstein bandwagon.
It takes defensive skill to incure a penalty, but sure, let's drop the cut block.
He generated two pressures, a sack, and a holding penalty in 21 snaps. That is the very definition of pass rushing production.
If we have a chance to draft Suh and we don't, I will scream, though.
There hasn’t been a more talented defensive tackle since Haynesworth/Williams.
I can't see the Bucs messing this up
It has been WIDELY acknowledged we need DL help, particularly in the middle. There is no way they can get around that.

I wouldn't hate the pick, but I'd rather have Berry.
It’s a deep draft for DL.
Officially now the head of the Lobstein bandwagon.
I disagree
Name me all the top DT’s in the NFL that can play the middle and then name me all the top Safeties. You can find safety talent elsewhere, these big dudes dont come about every day.
I think Berry is a great player, dont get me wrong, I just dont think you pass up a guy that can impact every single play.

Suh is high bust potential anyway
Take the almost sure thing top S and gtfo of there.
Officially now the head of the Lobstein bandwagon.
I don't see how you pass on a DT like Suh
especially after that last drive on Sunday. Our safeties will magically get better if we have a pass rush. I’m not in love with Sabby, but any secondary gets better when the pass rush gets better.
How do you think Ray Lewis, McAllister and Rolle’s careers got revived when Ngata was drafted.

This year he finally figured out the bull rush
and the half dozen times he used it, he provided pressure. But his only move in college and his first two years was run as fast as he could upfield and hope something happened.
www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer
I just can't stand it when a guy enters the NFL as a pass rusher and doesn't make an impact.
Almost every great pass rusher has immediately been successful in the NFL. It’s defending the run, learning discipline and technique that takes time, not getting to the quarterback. You either can or cannot coming out of college.
He doesn't appear to have any backup ideas.
He runs right at the tackle, get’s bounced, and then kind of stands there with a, “Shit, now what?” look to him.
Lead singer, songwriter, and caterer for the band Suicide Phoenix. We play sitar-based anthems on real estate law. Available for weddings, birthdays (13+, please), and LAN parties.
He'll probably make for a very good rotational pass rusher somewhere down the line, but it wasn't going to be here.
Some of the revisionist history annoys me, though. Gaines was NOT considered a reach at the time – almost every major scouting organization and team though he was a top 5 pick. They were wrong, then and now, but Romano’s article about reaching on Gaines was not correct.
Not being a smart ass, but what did you think about the pick at the time?
I was against him at #4. I dont know if thought he was a reach, I just didnt want him on my team.
www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer
Everybody I knew in the scouting community at the time had a huge laugh when he got drafted because they knew I loathed Adams and thought he was a second round pick.
One even went so far as to nearly ordering me an Adams jersey.
I was thinking Charlie Brown
He goes to kick the FG and everytime he fails. He never tries anything new. At least Wile E. Coyote tries new methods.
www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer
Yeah, but if we did what Gruden wanted at the time (Peterson)
That wouldn’t have sucked. But there was so much pressure to draft defensively.
Lead singer, songwriter, and caterer for the band Suicide Phoenix. We play sitar-based anthems on real estate law. Available for weddings, birthdays (13+, please), and LAN parties.
Yeah, I wasn't on board with the Peterson pick, though obviously that would have been awesome in retrospect.
I just tend to think teams should avoid drafting running backs in the first round if their are athletic big bodies available.
Is it fact that Gruden wanted Peterson and got overruled?
AP is a great player, but who’s to say he would have been as successful here.
Eh, don’t even want to get into this
www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer
Yep.
There were numerous articles on it at PR and the news even did a story on a quote he gave to that effect.

Would he be as succcessful?
Probabaly not because he’s been the ebst back in the league. Guaranteed he’d still be a top 3 back. The guy is amazing.
But he knew CJ wasn't going to make it that far.
AP had that injury (clavicle?) and was expected to fall. And did.

Can it me both?
Not all players come out gangbusters their first 2.5 years. He wasn’t a refined player to begin with. I would say (by his McD’s comment) that he relied far too much on speed and not studying or working out and the coaches allowed him to get away with it.
I’m not an Adams fan, but with the right coaching he might be alright. I don’t think he’s an 6-8 Pro Bowl guy, but if anyone can turn him around, it’s Marinelli.

It's on JJ, but that doesn't neccessarily mean it's a lost cause.
Playing in the NFL as a young quarterback is exceptionally difficult. Even if you start off well, that doesn’t guarantee you’re going to continue to perform well – see David Carr, or what’s currently happening with Mark Sanchez. There are a lot of bumpy roads, particularly if you don’t have the best talent around you. If he can cut down on his bad decisions in the next two-three games, I think you’ll see a guy with a bright future. If he can’t, then his ceiling is going to be as a back up.
I would like to see us take more of a Patriots-Tom Brady approach with him – slants, screens, and a lot of handoffs.
Some of it is growing pains. Everyone was ready to give Sanchez free hj's for the rest of his life
he’s falling back to Earth (also known as regression, in case you guys didn’t know that). This was his (JJ) 3rd start. Is he throwing 5 TD’s a quarter? No, but the guy is learning on the job with crappy players around him and an OC who can’t game plan to save his life.
JJ is making some good plays and bad plays and is doing what I expect rookie QB’s to do (stare down WR’s, hold the ball, leave the pocket).
I think the coaches are doing him a HUGE disservice by not adjusting the game plan week to week or game to game or even drive to drive. JJ’s not blameless, but to expect a virtuoso performance this early is a bit much. Everything Ive heard and read says he is a smart, hard working guy. I’ll hitch my wagon to him 10 out of 10 times because he will get it. Its the lazy dumb ones that fail and so far Freeman has been called both.
www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer
I'm glad you said that.
I was remarking to a co-worker that our coaching staff can’t seem to make any sort of adjustments. Every week we seem out manned, out gunned, and outsmarted. I’m not saying Fire Raheem. I would like to see Joe Barry getting the ax. Richard Mann has gone too long without producing a class receiver. I’m willing to give Bates another year to get some better personnel in.
I think Barrett Ruud is overrated as fuck. He makes a lot of tackles, but within the 5-7 yard range.
Lead singer, songwriter, and caterer for the band Suicide Phoenix. We play sitar-based anthems on real estate law. Available for weddings, birthdays (13+, please), and LAN parties.
Ruud will make some good plays, but he's not a game-changer.
If we can get something from Indy for him, that would be nice.
The worst plays imo were the lack of runs, the 3rd and 7 just before the missed field goal, the lack of accounting for the wind,
lack of halftime adjustments (47-7 outscored in 3rd quarter), etc.
That play before the FG had me fuming. I was screaming to run the ball, get a few more yards because the wind was dead in his face (thus why his kickoffs didnt get past the 10). That was Morris and Olsen’s fault for not helping our kicker.
www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer
And dont get me started on Dirk Johnson.
Our kicking game sucks. Dirk couldnt hit a 40 yard punt (in the air) witht he wind at his back this week.
