Adrian Gonzalez Available?
It’s the offseason, so speculation abounds. I read where the Red Sox are expected to make another push for Adrian Gonzalez. No big surprise there. I realize none of us actually know, but we can play the guessing game, too. What does the expert DRB community think of the chances that Gonzo lands in Beantown this offseason?
Furthermore, do you think the Rays should go after him as well and what might the trade package have to look like in order to acquire him? Would it be worth it?
I personally get very giddy at the thought of Gonzalez hitting in the middle of the Rays lineup, but I’m not sure he’d be worth an expected package of Wade Davis, Briggy, plus more. I’d be way more excited about sending Pena, Bartlett and some minor leaguers not named Deezy or Hellickson that way – which probably means a deal doesn’t get done.
Ultimately, any rosterbation has to consider whatever strategy the new GM in San Diego might have and obviously we have no idea since there isn’t one in place yet.
Anyway, just curious as to some general thoughts on the matter…

I'd love to see him with the Rays.
I’d be willing to give up one of the starters (Niemann, Hellickson, Davis, or even Garza) and Brignac. I’d (like the OP) prefer to do Bartlett or Pena, but that is not what the Padres will be after at all (I wouldn’t think). At this point, we have a lot more to offer than the Sox, but will we have the willingness to jettison cheap talent for pricier start-power?
One option might be if we could move Pena and his salary. That would free up the money to pay Gonzalez down the road. It’d also free up money to make paying Bartlett in the short-term more feasible. I’m very hesitant to trade Briggy at this point because of Beckhem sub-par year, and I’d hate to trade Jennings. If we could swing Niemann, it’d be ideal. If we could add another arm to the deal even better.

Yeah, I agree that the only acceptable way to give up multiple high-ceiling prospects for Gonzalez...
…is if we can afford to sign him long-term. So, if that means moving Pena, too, what team(s) might consider trading for him?
Maybe the Mets if they don’t think Delgado is going to bounce back? The Giants might be a match, plus they might have incentive if they knew it meant getting Gonzo out of their division? Same for Arizona? The Orioles might be a match, but I doubt we’d deal within the division? Atlanta possibly, but I know they just got LaRoche?
Also, how crazy would it be if we flipped Garza and Bartlett to the Pads for Gonzalez?

If we got Gonzalez
I wouldn’t trade Pena at all. I’d just move him to DH and trade Burrell for salary relief (i.e. send him somewhere for a non-prospect and maybe kick in a million or two in cash). Sure, the lineup would be lefty heavy, but it was also lefty heavy in 2008. Pena will be worth two draft picks at the end of 2010, and his bat is more valuable in the lineup than Burrell’s.

If the Rays didn't have Pena
I would be all over this like white on rice.
