So the Magic looked like buckets of fun last night

I did not realize Ryan Anderson was only 21. He’s a much cheaper Rashard clone.

Decent all-around night, I can take the downgrade in offensive explosiveness if he gives us an uptick in being able to guard somebody

They looked umm MAGICAL last night. 120 without Rashard and the high-man had 21. Such freaking depth and Vince fit in right away. Me likey.

I really don't think hes much of an offensive downgrade

Rashard has a solid but never utilized post game. Hes awful at putting the ball on the floor or pulling up off the dribble. Hes an incredibly overrated player. The depth and fresh legs are awesome. EVery player seems to have a niche and purpose. Well done Otis.

I agree great move

I do like Rashard better on the slash and dish or getting to the rim for a putback. On this team they just want him to stay on the perimeter, but the few times that he’s gone against that and gone to the rack it has been great. The suspension works out great, I just want to see R-andy (what do you think?) continue to shoot over 40% from behind the arc.

Denver has crazy reverse splits when it comes to receivers.

25th against #1s, first against #2s.

I’d roll with Nate Washington and Zach Miller. Gradkowski can’t throw it deep, so I imagine he’ll just dump it off to Miller the whole time. And San Diego is 18th vs TE.

I'm trying to trade the Eagles D(Eagle/Viking platoon) for Maclin

Schedule really starts to favor the Vikings over Philly. Maclin gives me good long term value.

As far as the shmegma listed above, I already own Moore and Washington and have a 1 unit bid on Garcon (double bonanza w Peyton potential). It all looks so mediocre that I’m tempted to stand pat and roll with Garcon and either Moore or Wash. I feel better about Wash if Collins plays. Moore is likely to have more scoring chances snce the Saints score 40+ a week.

Collie's kind of taken Garcon's chances for touches, so it's sort of russian roulette with him.

Same with Lance Moore, through every keeps telling me he’s going to be a big part of the offense.

It’s not an uncommon practice, though to what extent I don’t know. I’d have to do some digging, but I’ve found quite a few articles that talk about punters/kcikers having LTBE clauses dealing with leading the league in catches or something. It’s a way to roll cap money and preserve it.

This just calls out the Bucs on it and it doesn’t look good, but I think it’s more common than we anticipate.

Would Pittsburgh have been as good had Tomlin walked in and switched to Cover 2? The same personnel can yield wildly different results with the change of system

www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer

by Buc Wild on Oct 29, 2009 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Of course

Did Tomlin walk in and switch the scheme? Or did he work with the personnel he had to make things work? This administration has failed at least twice in my opinion, with their coordinator hires. The book remains out on Olsen (Olson). Those were the biggest decisions new admins make, and they bombed. I don’t think its comparable to the situation in KC, where they ousted an incumbant OC.

I guess we won't ever know.

I think the switch to this scheme, regardless of personnel was a poor decision. Not whether that came from the top or was a Morris or Dominik decison we’ll never know. Whoever made that choice failed to do any due diligence and recognize what we currently had in place player-wise and the movement of the league.

Over one season, yes

But the implicit detail is that they haven’t been spending for at least two years in a row and probably farther back. Going out and signing guys over one off-season is foolish, but if you can get 1-2 guys a year that fit your system then you will have a pretty good team after 2-3 years. I agree that they aren’t competitive this year, but it doesn’t hurt to spend to the level that the league has deemed a minimum. I don’t think it’s wise to shut everything down unless you have a guaranteed contender. It’s not fair to the fans, it’s not fair to the team, and it’s not fair to the coach that has his feet on a trap door and a noose around his neck.

The Tigers went from a historically bad team in 2003 to a World Series team 3 years later, by a) cultivating young pitching and b) signing 1-2 good free agents every year during that period.

Since 2005 the money has been "rolled over" I believe

the issue is, in hindsight, does it make a difference? Had we added players to our previous regime, would they be worth as much now? Adding a Cato June or other Cover 2 guy would be close to fruitless this year. On offense we could have used the guys, but on defense, it’s almost a moot point.

Doesn’t excuse them from not spending in previous years as no one could predict the move to this scheme.

Doesn’t excuse them from not spending in previous years as no one could predict the move to this scheme.

It’s called foresight. This is pretty weak stuff for how thinly-veiled their pay to the bottom strategy has been. It’s pretty evident what’s going on, it just took this final piece for me to come around. What’s the point in rolling over the money? Free Agents still have to want to play for your team, regardless of the dollars, and there has been no move to lock up internal talent. Oh yeah, we gave 10M guaranteed to Stone Hands. If Vince or Culverhouse were rolling over money we would call it like it is. That’s its being rolled right up into their pockets. Let the record show, that I am all for rolling over money as long as ticket prices see a similar drop in price.

In their defense (only in terms of scheme and willingness to spend)

they went really hard after Haynesworth and Vilma, who potentially woudl have ade this scheme far more effective. Inability to adjust after not reeling them in, is a sign of incompetence.

The only explanation I can offer is this

The old regime, mainly Bruce Allen, had indicated prior to his firing that the Bucs intended to spend all that money rolled over. He has several quotes out there to that effect. When he was canned, and Dominik brought in, either the handcuffs were put on them by the Glazers, or they said swing with Big Albert and if you miss, we aren’t spending.

Here's the nuts and bolts
A person familiar with the finances of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers says that last season, the team signed two free-agents, running back Noah Herron and defensive end Patrick Chukwurah, for contracts that totalled $25 million. Under the rules of the salary cap, the Buccaneers were charged that full amount for the players. But to actually earn that money, each player had to, among other things, block six punts apiece—an exceedingly difficult prospect. In the end, neither player ended up taking a single snap. Mr. Herron was paid $157,000 and Mr. Chukwurah $71,000, although the team’s salary-cap number reflected the full value of their contracts. Tampa Bay, which ranked among the lowest teams in spending last season, has lost all six of its games. Tampa Bay and NFL officials declined to comment.

The issue with the contract is, the bottom line was better with the Bucs, but the structure was not.

The Skins coughed up more guaranteed. If the Bucs wanted him, they had the room to make a 110% offer. You dont want to overpay for a guy, but if you have cap room (fictional) of $40 MM and the other teams are at $20MM, you can afford to put that higher offer out there. Make it a tough decision for him, or an offer he can’t turn away from.

Leverage the facts in your favor. That was my beef. What Hayneswroth’s true value in dollars is, I don’t know, but if we wanted him, we could have made an offer that he couldnt pass up.

And as a follow up, if we had to outspend Washington to get someone, that's not a good deal.

Even someone of Haynesworth’s caliber, the risk of injury and declining performance is extremely, extremely high.

Yea, turns out it made no difference where he want, both teams are awful

Couldve saved some state income tax though.

I’d really like to breakdown the offer that the Bucs put out and Skins in terms of guaranteed dollars, first 3 years, and overall money, but have no access to the Bucs offer.

www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer

by Buc Wild on Oct 29, 2009 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Haynesworth would have made a huge difference for us because of the vast difference in talent between him and our current DL.

Where as, although Washington was adding a very good player, they all ready had a strong defensive tackle rotation. Haynesworth would have made our defensive line good enough that instead of being the worst defense, we’d probably just be in the bottom half.

by Suttree on Oct 29, 2009 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

There are other ways to spend money, though

How about making a commitment to the players that have proven themselves? I know that this season is a complete tryout, but why did we not extend P-Buc (whom I’m sure is getting torched, but we had no one else ready to step up, Ronde doesn’t count)? Why have Tanard, Wilkerson, and Joseph not been extended? For PR reasons you can throw money at guys like AH (not that the team would be conclusively better), but you can structure the deal such that they will find a better deal, ultimately, and it still looks like you are doing right by your fans. Vilma is the same boat, we threw our name in at the last minute as if we were sincere about a play. Same with the Cutler trade. What about signing Jabari Greer or any of the other young corners out there that went for market value and would make our turd of a secondary look somewhat beefed?

You can either die the hero or live long enough to become the villain

by Andy Hellicksonstine on Oct 29, 2009 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I think they have no idea what the pulse is and figured they would bring back a fan-favorite for market value

Except they don’t realize that Clayton is talentless and the fan base hates him. They literally could have given that money to Jerry Rice to stand on the sidelines in pads and it would have gone to a better cause, and at least we could say we have Jerry Rice.

You can either die the hero or live long enough to become the villain

by Andy Hellicksonstine on Oct 29, 2009 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, I think they let Buchannon go because he's been a miserable failure in man coverage throughout his career.

Despite his physical talents, Buchannon performed much better in the Tampa Two then the heavy Cover 1 schemes in Oakland and Houston.

I wouldn’t extend Tanard, Wilkerson, and Joseph either yet. Rookie contracts are a beautiful thing.

by Suttree on Oct 29, 2009 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

I wasn't happy about P-Buc leaving town. Mack and Cox aren't better.

My opinion is the reason those guys haven’t been extended is the Glazers don’t typicallyl extend with more than one year left. T-Jack will (I hope) get his due when it’s time, as will Joseph. Ruud situation is actually kind of fascinating to see how it plays out. I initialy couldn’t believe they didn’t re-sign him, but after seeing him in Bates’ scheme, I’m not sure of his monetary value. Thus far, it looks like the right call was made to not sign him before the year. (I’m only talking dollar and cents compared to value in scheme)

Fastball called strike rates are pretty unreal for 86 MPH

I know his junk his tough to hit, but its amazing how he gets people to chase that while letting the fastballs float by.

I've always thought a big part of it is that his pitches are so complementary, which you hit on the head. Peep this:

This was a start selected at random. You see all these pitches all over the place and yet, here’s where they ended up:

You can see from the top-down view that his four-seamer starts right at a righty before back-dooring him

I could see a lot of guys taking that pitch same with his other fastball, it starts out right at a guy before turning over after the batter has already committed.

Jags, what the fuck ever, they’ve never sold out well, even when they were good.

by Suttree on Oct 29, 2009 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I doubt it, particularly since the economic situation over there isn't much better than in the US.

Not to mention any NFL team would be competing with Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, and West Ham alone in the city.

by Suttree on Oct 29, 2009 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

And yes, the NFL games are on Sunday, but big EPL games often get played on Sunday.

Even if all EPL games were played on Saturday, Tottenham and West Ham fans are largely middle-class folk without a lot of disposable income. Maybe you’d get business owners buying luxury seats (which I believe Arsenal has had a problem with at the Emirates, though PoW may be more informed about this), but I can’t imagine a team being wildly successful over there.

by Suttree on Oct 29, 2009 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

I would too. I'd also probably stop rooting for them and pick a new team.

I’m not implying that is what will happen, but if they are sold, you have to wonder what happens down the road.

This
To Whom It May Concern:

In the ninth generation after the reign of the frost gnomes, when the sparrow prince cleaved his soul to the diamond-pure heart of the Maiden of the Moors, a celestial race came forth from the heavens and bore fruit. They were the Nephalim, and they consorted with earthly women and fathered a race of giants and gunslinger quarterbacks. The descendants of the giants are still among us, and they have the power to transmute metals and see within the hearts of men, and also to fire blitz and hold dominion over non-flowering plants. When challenged by these descendants of the celestials, do not make eye contact, lest they replace your soul with that of a pit demon, and also know that the world will end on December 21, 2012, when the frost gnomes run out of timeouts and can no longer challenge the Mayan overlords.

A few seasons later, Riley is a star linebacker for the Colorado Mustangs. His best friend on the team is Sal Ricci, an Italian-born tight end who came to the PFL after starring in an Italian minor league. Ricci is a bit of a mystery man, but he and Riley seem oblivious to an impending threat as several terrorists slip across the Canadian border armed with a plan to hit American capitalism where it will hurt the most: Minneapolis.

the speculation is on the debt increasing and being owed in full by 2010. If that is true, the Glazers will be in deep doo doo. The interest being owed this early and being such a huge amount is trouble.
