Time to trade BJ

BJs value could be at it's peak. He's showed just enough here at the end. With Desmond Jennings ready, the Rays could pull off another Delmon Young type trade. Biggest need in my opinion is a decent catcher. With that in mind here's a couple of ideas:

1. Cleveland - One of the top catcher prospects is Carlos Satana (cool name too). He is expendable to Cleveland because of Shoppach and the Indians could use some OF talent with only Choo a big time player. The could put together a package of Santana and Nick Weglarz. Weglarz is a Zobrist type who could provide depth at 1B (another big need) and OF.

2. Minnestoa - Jose Morales has big league experience and can hit for average. How nice would it be to add another .300 hitter to this lineup. They could throw in a young arn like Shooter Hunt to restock the minors if Helickson forces his way to bigs next season.

I guess the point

is that if you think Upton’s true talent level was how he played this year, then it would be wise to cut your losses now, while a lot of people probably still think his true talent level was more like 2008 or 2007.

That said, I think trading now would be selling low, but it doesn’t hurt to test the market. If someone is still willing to pay for a 2008 Upton (thus getting us a better return package than we would get in trading Crawford), it might be worth it.

Nobody said anything about not testing the market.

Just acting like he’s been an albatross or huge disappointment (like Delmon) is about the furthest from the truth you can get.

Carlos Santana is expendable because of Shoppach?

Wow.

So is Michael Stanton expendable because of Jeremy Hermida?

Hermida was the better prospect

Not that it’s relevant now, but just something to keep in mind…

Eh...

It’s a toss up as to who was/is a better prospect. I wasn’t really big on Hermida, but I loooove Stanton. Ofcourse the point is, a passable-solid option in the bigs doesn’t make an elite prospect expendable.

bgfour's first post was dull and boring.

It was his 2nd post that produced all of the lulz.

But you’re right. I can’t argue the sports chief, fourcloses or TheUnknownInsider. They’re like shakespere for retards.

I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.

Correct me if im wrong

The sports chief and fourcloses had only one post before they got banned.

The Sports Chief was banned after his first post because it was a blatant troll attempt.

I banned fourcloses account, but not him. After theunknowninsider deleted all of his posts, I banned fourcloses to prevent that from happening; with a message of something like “create a new account to defend yourself in the thread, I don’t want your post being deleted”. I think I unbanned the account after like 3 days because he never came back.

I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.

the only positive thing i can say

is if the Rays are approaching this off-season with intentions of hoping offers would be good enough to trade BJ, his last month has boosted his trade value immensely. It’s not what it would have been at the end of last season, but since a) he’s cheap, b) under team control for 3 more seasons, and c) extremely young, oh yeah and d) loaded with potential, he has shown enough here for the Rays to pull in quite a haul, which is the only reason why they would trade him. If the Rays could get a Posey and Baumgarder for him, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

Uptons value is so low right now. The only way we trade him is if we get

2007 or 2008 value. I dont think that is going to happen. We would get more value if they insist on trading him, at next years deadline.

by AlexFL on Oct 4, 2009 8:10 AM EDT reply actions

Ease up kericr. You are so bored by this post that you replied several times?

We are all rays fans here and on the same team. It’s an interesting post because other teams have been scouting BJ lately. If you’re not interested than don’t post.

by AlexFL on Oct 4, 2009 8:17 AM EDT reply actions

This isn't an interesting post because it operates under blatantly false assumptions.

That doesn’t mean we can’t come and shoot down these assumption:

1) Uptons value is NOT at its peak

2) Clevland arleady has Sizemore and Choo, an extra outfielder wouldn’t hurt, but considering their recent success (or lackthereof) they probably need to rebuild.

3) I don’t even want Weglarz as he is relegated to DH and doesn’t seem to have enough power to justify the postion. .380 OBP / .450 Slugging is nice, but given the hit he takes for playing DH its not worth it.

Apparently we aren't on the same team.

Because he defines Jose Morales as a decent catcher, one worth trading a better younger player for and I absolutely don’t.

by R.J. Anderson on Oct 4, 2009 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't have issues with that.

I just don’t see Morales being too different from Navarro. Same skill sets, only Navarro is younger.

New Members/Posting Etiquette

As a longer term DRB reader, newer poster, I’m a tad concerned over deep frying a guy/gal who posts something unpopular. I’m well aware there’s a community here of which I’m trying to slowly mesh into…and respect that wholeheartedly. Scaring folks away if they don’t meet expectations of core readers seems a bit much. (This, of course, excludes newbs posting flame posts and/or similar personal attacks. That’s just flat-out stupid.)

Please don’t shoot the messenger, especially one who really likes this site and our Rays. :)

by pslieber on Oct 4, 2009 12:25 PM EDT reply actions

This person isn't delivering any impartial message, they're delivering their opinion.

If you take a look at the responses, they almost universally are criticizing one of two things:

1. Cleveland isn’t replacing Grady Seismore with BJ Upton in a trade. Ever.
2. The proposed return for BJ Upton is crap.

If you’re going to present an opinion on something, there’s only a limited amount of tolerance I (and for that matter, most people in general) will have before I become hostile. I’m not going to be nice for the sake of being nice.

I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.

by kericr on Oct 4, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

He's a post-and-run type.

It’s not that his opinion is awful, it’s that he missed key facts and therefore his logic is questionable at best.

Saying “I think we should look at moving B.J. because we have Jennings and Joyce” is one thing, saying “Cleveland only has one outfield talent and that’s Choo” is quite another.

by R.J. Anderson on Oct 4, 2009 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough, colleagues.

What would you guys think about a Geovany Soto for Upton trade?

Both are players coming off of down years, after being stars over 08. Both are also young and get a lot of value from their defense and positional adjustments. Also, BJ is considered lazy and Soto does pot – so he’s probably lazy also.

Given that the Rays have no depth at catcher and a lot of depth in the OF, it seems like a real solid move for them. Ditto for the Cubs, who have no depth in the oufield (they have no depth at catcher either though).

Would you do that trade? And more importantly, do you think the Cubs would be willing to take a player with lesser talent than Upton for Soto (they seem to have soured on him this year, as evidenced by the fact that Koyie Hill has started 69 games this year. heh).

by vivaelpujols on Oct 5, 2009 12:44 AM EDT reply actions

It's an interesting question...

It does look like Soto’s down year was largely due to BABIP – .337 last year and .251 this year. His power is down and some LD became GB, but I don’t think it’s a huge red flag. Maybe you can say his true talent is somewhere in between, maybe a 3 to 3.5 WAR player, which is probably an upgrade, but this comparison is a little scary.

All in all I think BJ is worth a lot more than Soto even with 2 less years of team control, but I’m not necessarily so good at trade valuations.
