OTTOTD 11/13: Early Dose of Awful.

I'm up and came across another winner essay from my literature class. Hooray!

Star-divide

Beat! Beat! Drums!

What Whitman is trying to say in this poem is beat the drums and blow the bugles as loud as you can. So loud that that you can here them through the windows, and doors. So loud that it sounds ruthless. Loud enough that it penetrates through the church and disrupt the congregation, disrupt the school kids while their trying to study, and the bride groom also. Make so much noise that the bride and groom are no longer happy. Even to the farmer make so much noise that the farmer can’t concentrate enough to plow his fields and gathers his grains. Play the drums as hard as you can and blow the bugles as hard as you can. Beat the drums and blow the bugles! So loud that you cant here the traffic or the rustle of the wheels. So loud that those who own beds and are trying to sleep cant sleep. No one shall do nothing. Disrupt everything and everyone; the bargainers, brokers, speculators, talkers, singers, lawyers, and the judge. Beat the drums quicker, blow the bugle wilder. Beat the drums and blow the bugle. Do not stop to converse with the enemy not even to reason earnestly with a person for purposes of dissuasion or remonstrance. Don’t pay any attention to the timid, weepers or those that pray. Don’t pay any attention to the old man who is begging the young man. Do not let the child’s voice be heard or the mother’s earnest request through the beating of the drums and the blowing of the bugle. Make even the braced frame serving as a support shake the dead while they are waiting for a vehicle to convey the dead to their respective places. So strong that you thump the drums and blow the bugles loud.

I believe this says no matter who you are make your voice heard. Yell and scream to the top of your lungs if you have too but make it happen. Let no one hold you back. Be so loud that you overplay any and everything. Play your drums and blow your bugle.

I am truly inspired!

Yesterday on ESPN Buster Onley said the Rays have "had internal discussions"

about signing O-dog and moving Zobrist to RF full time.

Has anyone else heard this?

Was this before or after he said that we were trading Sternfan for a sandwich?

I imagine we have had a lot of “internal” discussions. 85% are smoke screen for that little troll Olney to run with and see how other teams react. Thanks Buster. Bringing in Hudson does not appreciably help our team.

Out of all the plays the defense has played: 4961 total

He has called 88 blitzes total

Accounts to about 1% of blitzes called.

by R.J. Anderson on Nov 13, 2009 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

It's a good point and their wOBA actually tracks pretty well together

Beej had an awful year, was still worth 2.5 WAR and made 400K. Grander was worth 3.4 and had a fairly typical year, though his wOBA dropped for the second consecutive year. Looking at a 5/3/2 over the last 3 years Granderson has been worth 4.32 WAR while Beej has been worth 3.52. People are dumb if they want to swap out these 2 players.

I'm not really a NUMBERS guy!!

Granderson is what, 28? 29?

People seem to think because he’s fast he’s a good leadoff hitter.

by R.J. Anderson on Nov 13, 2009 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

When Upton is bad, he doesn't get on much, when he's good he's above-average.

Once pitchers realized that he’s more likely to strike out looking as to jump all over a pitch they really threw him some strikes. If he can’t hit the down the middle FB by May of next year, then we really have to make some decisions.

I'm not really a NUMBERS guy!!

by Andy Hellicksonstine on Nov 13, 2009 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

Oh I agree, Grandy is a finished product at this point. I'm just talking about the Beej

I saw at the end of the year that was slogging through some tough times. I like that he didn’t lash out and took it in stride. I thought he handled his struggles very maturely. Hopefully he’s been humbled a little (which everyone needs from time to time) and can just focus on building on little successes to start next year.

by rglass44 on Nov 13, 2009 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

Yes it is. It's hyperbole, but you can't ignore the financial aspect of any deal.

Regardless, I’d rather Detroit be able to clear room by getting rid of Jackson, Willis, Ordonez, whomever.

by R.J. Anderson on Nov 13, 2009 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

I just worry that Grandy is a 5+ win plyer when the current studs are in their prime.

I don’t know how good we’ll be in 4 years when the current contracts the Yanks have become anchors, but in the meantime he’s a huge upgrade. Dismissing the talent they’d give up may not be wise, but I know that we have a very good chance to compete with the current nucleus. Who knows what’s going to happen afterward. The Yanks, though, have a seemingly certain window, and I don’t think Jackson fits that. I also don’t think we’ll ever see Joba the Ace happen. I think Joba the BP arm is what we’ll see.

by rglass44 on Nov 13, 2009 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

For now and next year.

After that, who knows.

Even if you assume Jackson is a 3 WAR CFer, you don’t want the Yanks having that at free for a few years.

by rglass44 on Nov 13, 2009 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

As opposed to a DH who may see 10-15 pitches a game. It also is a way for older teams to stay viable. IE teams that rely on FA can shift their oldies there. Younger teams have less of a need.

by rglass44 on Nov 13, 2009 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

and I do enjoy it.

Nothing better than a pitcher actually getting a hit. I wonder if there would be more accountability if both leagues went back to it.

by rglass44 on Nov 13, 2009 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

So have 2, 8 and 2, 7 team divisions

WEST Sea, LAA, LAD, ARI, SF, OAK, COL, SD
EAST PHI, NYY, NYM, BOS, PIT, TOR, BAL, WAS
SOUTH TB, FLA, ATL, HOU, TEX, KC, STL
NORTH CWS, CHC, MIN, DET, CLE, MIL, CIN,

West and South go NL due to having more teams in there, East and North go AL. Top seeds from each division make it with 2 wild cards. Problem solved, you’re welcome.

“With that team I felt like from 1999 to 2003 we could have won a championship every year,” Dominik says. “In that window we did it with [quarterback] Trent Dilfer, we did it with Shaun King, and we did it with Brad Johnson. We want to be one of those teams that does it with one quarterback and has continued success with one quarterback.”
