OTTOTD: Kudos to Belichick

I tip my hat to Coach Belichick for his decision to go for the short 4th down conversion. I'm tired of hearing "play the percentages" from the media talking heads. What exactly are the percentages? What is Peyton's track record of driving down the field with 1 time out and 2 minutes or less in the game? I don't care what the Aaron Brooks of the worlds track record is.

Peter King put Manning's chance of success at 35% of going 70 yards. Maybe thats right, though I would guess higher, especially at home. His article failed to mention what his chance of success is to go 30 yards. If 70 yards was 35%, I would guess 30 yards would be 60%.  He is too good for the clock to be the determining factor. This was coming down to Peyton vs. the Pats D.  The Pats defense was tired. 2 small yards and the game is over with 100% certainty. If they needed to go 70, the first two passes would have been to Addai and Clark for 15-20 yards a piece over the middle.

Say the Pats had a 65% chance of converting 4th down, which also seems light. If they fail, the Colts have a 65% chance of winning. The expected outcome would of a Pats victory would be 65% chance of 100% victory + 35% chance of having a 35% chance of victory which comes out to 77.25% chance of winning. Unless you think there is less than 23% chance of Peyton going 70 yards (King picks 35%), then you support Belichick's choice.

In football, coaches err on the side of caution on 4th down for fear of being criticized. I think Bill's process was sound with a bad result. The Pats D still could have stopped the Colts. Given how quickly they folded, only further justifies the coach's decision.

Thus concludes my football rant, what sayeth you?

Great take

My thinking was similar. If you think you can get two measly yards to ice the game you do it. I’m not sure why they didn’t just run at Freeney. That dude gets thrown off the ball when it’s right at him. The only place to find a bigger set of balls is a bowling alley, it was gutsy and if they get those 2 yards, they just beat an undefeated, rival team, and he’s praised as a genius.

My Tweet to King

@FreeZorilla @SI_PeterKing Assume 80% chnce of Colts score on sht fld (conservative), Pats chance of victory is (65% of 100%)+(35% of 20%)=72%>65% punt

That choice almost sealed victory for my fantasy team.

Then Addai’s run almost sealed it. Now I need 9 points from Phil Dawson. DAGGER!!!!!

Looks like my line

Turner and my newly acquired Cedric Benson both out before they made huge impacts, add in Nate Burleson getting absolutely nothing, having to use Tony Romo because Schuab is on a bye and my decision to stubbornly pick the Titans D because my opponent has Chris Johnson, and the net result is an 80 point blowout that was over after the 1 o’clock games.

I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.

When you are using one of the top 5 QBs of all time, I would not use league average stats as Peyton at home in perfect climate is far better than Lg Avg.

FO had the best point about it.

No shame going for it, but why not spread the field and have everyone run three yard curls? Give yourself a little room for error with the routes and give Brady the chance to get the ball to an open man.

It did "fail" in real life

but if you look objectively at the replay, when he secured the ball after the bobble, it was on his front shoulder and his back foot was only about a foot from the 30, which means the ball is clearly on the 30. It wasn’t a good spot and the official probably still wouldn’t have overturned it because of the magnitude of the play, but they made the wrong call and it still should have been a 1st down.

Also, St. Pete Times, please stop giving Josh Freeman all credit for the team's improvement.

Improved offensive line play and using fully functional wide receivers (as opposed to Antonio Bryant) makes a huge difference.

Doesn't help when the d-line plays like 5 year old girls though.

DBs and LBs can only do so much when the line isn’t getting pressure.

Word.

Major props to the DBs. Sabby still generally sucks (though with signs of life), but Ronde, Tanard, and Aqib all deserve credit for holding up really well without a consistent pass rush.

Bates desperately needs to start using Hayes and Black as pass rushers, though.

by Suttree on Nov 16, 2009 12:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

2 QB pressures in 31 pass attempts.

I don’t know why we aren’t blitzing more. In the beginning of the year, it seemed we were on every play. But I guess we’re not doing it because we need all the LB help we can get in the run-game. Having said that, I think Hayes has potential but Quincy Black is the biggest ghost on the team.

Hence why I asked.

That one didn’t matter but the pass interference or whatever it was later did. Also a bad snap exchange and some other things just didn’t help the Buc’s cause at the end.

by SRQman on Nov 16, 2009 12:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It was actually a defensive hold not a pass intereference.

But they called it pass interference and that may have been worse for the Bucs than if it were holding. Holding = 10 yards, PI = spot foul.

Black's solid with potential to be better.

He’s the strong side linebacker, they tend to unnoticed because they’re banging away with tight ends and fullbacks.

He gets overwhelmed sometimes. I’d really like to see him used more as a blitzer. He’s got the tools for it.

Its the attitude with which they criticize the decision that pierces my skin. On NBC allt hey talked about was bad move, you have to play the percentages. NBC had no idea what the percentages were! People are so close-minded about things like this it’s amazing. Look at how often the Pats go for it on fourth down too, I love that. Tradition and “conventional knowledge” are excuses. So all of you guys are in agreement

That Belichick made the right call? I think it was pretty dumb. Did it take guts? Hell yeah, but when push comes to shove he is telling his defense that he thinks they suck.

If the call had worked, then he would be getting praised as a “maverick” and a genius, but since it didn’t he deserves the fallout. He is a smart enough coach to know the percentages and the risk involved. I’m sure all the talking heads don’t really bother him at all.

I just think that it would be much harder for them to go 70+ with one timeout. They would have had a pretty good chance to pick off Manning (who had been putting up some ducks in the 2nd half btw). If you don’t get that conversion you essentially lose, but if you punt it you have a chance. The risk was not worth it in my opinion.

I admire him for the call, but people always admire gutsy calls, that doesn’t make them the right ones. He had a lot of factors going into that, most of which won’t show up on your stat sheet. Hostile crowd, biased? referees, noise, field position, momentum. I would have punted it. Sometimes the safe play, while not being pretty or “gutsy”, is still the right one.

It's simply a matter of opinion.

It was a calculated risk that didn’t work out. They are still on top of their division, but they pretty much lost any hope for home field advantage in the playoffs. The Patriots are much more capable of winning at Indy, then Indy is capable of winning at N.E. in January. So, its not a huge deal they lose this game. I’m sure that thought factored into the decision to go for it.

I just think it is effed up to essentially tell your defense that they are out of gas, and don’t have a chance. At least if you lose by punting, you cover your ass in the locker room. Not that Belichick gives a shit what his players think.

I don’t know why I always find myself rooting for the Colts in that game. I guess I’m just jealous of the Patriots success this decade and being a hater, but even rooting against them I had to admit to myself that the spot was b.s. He definitely wasn’t bobbling it all the way to the ground.

Those types of spots happen on virtually every play. It just gets blown up on a crucial play.

Spotting the ball has to be the most random and arbitrary act in any sport.

True

I can’t argue that. I will amend my statement to say that spotting the ball is one of the more random and abritrary acts. Not an absolute statement anymore.

Spots are worse

Every pitch is one of two outcomes. Spots have infinite possibilities. Every spot is wrong. The ipmact of balls and strikes is greater though.

Maybe you root for the Colts because the Pats are a dirty north eartern team.

And Peyton Manning is a good old southern boy playing for a mid west team.

I don't mind the north east

so much, I think it’s just really hard not to like Peyton Manning. I am from Kentucky though, so maybe his good ole boy charm biases me.

Typically, you can do the foloowing formula to join words, sentences, etc.:

The " " is necessary to get a space between the sentences or whatever.

So right now it’s multiple bulleted points in multiple cells, and he wants to put all the bulleted points for each apt. in the same cell? Why would he want them in the same cell?

Copy>Paste Special>Transpose

Then they’ll be in a row.

Then do =a2&" "& etc.

See how the formatting looks. I think if he messes with that it sahould work.

On a serious note, I've been really pleased with Freeman, but let's not go annoiting him the savior yet.

He’s averaging a couple bad decisions a game, which isn’t any improvement over Josh Johnson and he’s gotten a little lucky that they haven’t become turnovers.

by Suttree on Nov 16, 2009 4:46 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I have seen him play one quarter of football. 3rd v GB. So I have no real opinion.

Just getting swept up by the stats and Gene Deckerhoff’s narration. I read that yesterday’s INT wasn’t even his fault.

The INT was a completely hideous call that should have been either a first down completion or an incompletion.

Somehow they ruled it an interception after review. It pretty much lost us the game.

That said, he had two throws later that could have easily been picked. He’s great and terrible from one play to the next. Better than Sanchez, though.

It's more impressive because that was the knock on him.

And I can recall quite a few dropped passes in the second half (K2, Clayton) yesterday. According to Deck, they were catchable.
