The Official Free Agency and Rosterbation 2010 Hot Stove Season Thread a.k.a. The Thread to End All Threads a.k.a Smooth Pimplicious Andy F is Ready to School Some Fools a.k.a. Let's Get Ready to Rumble

I think the title pretty much sums up what's going on here.  I'm going to make the effort to keep this thread updated with moves as they happen.  Now I'm no Jon Heyman or Mort Anderson so I'm going to wait until I find confirmation on a deal going down before putting it in the thread.  The way I'd like this to work is to start new sub-threads for every deal, so please push the reply button as hard as you can so that we can keep discussion on that particular move.

Here's some links that may be worth keeping an eye on:

As always, I highly encourage you to visit the other SBN sites as well, to bounce ideas off of them and to see where they stand on everything.

So is Adam LaRoche

If we can move Pena, LaRoche could be an affordable signing

KLAW
LaRoche is a rare bird, a player with a sustained, significant performance spike in the second halves of seasons — which means that before the All-Star Break, he’s nothing special. He has average or slightly above-average power and his plate discipline isn’t a strength (12 of his walks this year were intentional). He’s also very vulnerable to left-handed pitchers, especially anyone with a decent curve or slider. On defense, he has very little range but receives the ball well and can handle the ball hit right at him. He’s an average offensive player at a premium offensive position, and the shape of his production means he’s probably best served as the strong half of a platoon, but I’d expect some team to pay him as a regular in both salary and years.

I'm a Brett Favre honk so FUCK YOU!

You guys are right, I was going to say that Los has mostly seemed like a second half player, so here's the numbers

wOBA…LaRoche..Pena……Diff
Apr/Mar…0.290……0.327….0.037
May……….0.334……0.340….0.005
June……..0.345……0.389….0.044
July……….0.380……0.346….(0.034)
August….0.400……0.423…..0.023
Sept/Oct..0.377……0.374…..(0.003)

The thing that really stands out to me is the BAbip:
Babip…..LaRoche…Pena….Diff
Apr/Mar….0.243……0.252…0.009
May……….0.288…….0.287…(0.001)
June……..0.303…….0.322….0.019
July……….0.315…….0.287….(0.028)
August….0.354…….0.296…..(0.058)
Sept/Oct..0.362……0.296……(0.066)

LaRoche has to have a crazy BAbip for his wOBA to be above average, while Pena does not have that problem. Remember the AL average wOBA for 1B is 0.358. HERE is a google.doc so that you can see other points of interest. Mainly note the PA, perhaps Pena has had more time for his BAbip to fall in line, but in most cases it’s only 100 PA’s. Anyway, you guys were right on about this, I wouldn’t look to LaRoche as a fill in if Pena bounces anytime soon.

I mean his season was almost as much of an outlier as Barty and he’s 33. Arb would probably make him a lot of money that he might be inclined to take.

Brad Thompson signs with the Royals

John Paul Morosi
Low, low K rate, but he didn’t walk anyone either in 09 with the Cards. Over 386 ML innings he has a 4.89 FIP that may be exaggerated slightly by a 2007 that saw him get 17 starts. Looks like he’s pretty good against righties:

Could be a decent low-cost find for the Royals. Maybe Dayton Moore studied some basic economics at a community college over the summer with these recent moves.

Royals also signed Jorge Campillo to a Minor League contract

Dick Kaegel
Could be the kind of low-risk move that we make. To wit:

Year FIP IP
2005 3.52 2
2006 2.29 2.1
2007 5.41 13
2008 4.00 158.2
2009 3.79 4.1

http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=8686&position=P
Of course, he’s 31 and has thrown 180 innings in the Majors, but check out his 2008 pitch values.

I'm going to start honking the horn on the "trade for Yonder Alonso" bandwagon

I wanted Billy Butler as a DH/1B last off-season but KC wisely held onto him. Alonso would be a nice get as a 1B of the future, but it’d have to be a prospect(s) for prospect(s) swap since Cincy doesn’t want to take on payroll.

Votto is someone to shoot for

Votto put up a 4.4 WAR in 2009 (compared to 2.8) of Pena. As desperate as they are for pitching maybe they could put something together around Niemann (and Brignac?) for him. The guy’s a stud and would be getting much more press if he was on a winning team. He also could be available for a lot less than say Adrian Gonzalez.

Another good 1B/3B prospect

who is available is Matt Gamel, I mentioned this else where, but the Brewers would like young/cheap SP in return so Jeff Niemann would made sense. Also if that is not enough for him, if we waited until about the ASB to trade PENA those prospects we get in return could supplement Niemann in that trade and give Hellboy and Gamel some time to mature so we possibly wouldn’t be losing too much in production while gaining 5.5 years of a good young future 1B.

I like Gamel a lot, but I don't get why everyone wants to ditch Niemann

We have him for 5 more years, and outside of a likely to regress HR rate, I thought he pitched pretty well last year. I think it’s far more likely that we move Garza than Niemann.

That's one thing I always overlook in this argument, and you're right that it can't be ignored.

Putting together the top-30 starts gave me a chance to watch him quite a bit and I really like what he can do. The flip side is that last year is probably his peak, unless you think a bump to his K/9 is likely. I consider guys like him to be a moraine. He can maybe improve slightly, but the other side is a steep precipice to fall off of.

Money

They know that they are a long ways away. It’s a good idea, Zimmerman’s range can help Bartletts declining defense and their offense was a mess last year, but Bartlett is just about to get really expensive. Flores seems like an enigma. In a really small sample last year, he blew the doors out, but hadn’t done much before that.

ya i really hope that Bartlett is moved this offseason

he is about to get a raise (probably will make 3-4 M next year), his defense is on the decline and i think he is really overrated, and that Brignac will outperform him next year.

hopefully someone will overpay for him, someone like Flores, a position of need for us

We’ve already picked up 2 relievers on top of Calero/Benoit/unknown that you have to think we are looking at. Rockies re-sign catcher Paul Phillips to a minor league contract

Troy Renck
Phillips has a .293 wOBA over a career of 213 plate appearances. The article states that they may still try to re-sign Yorvit Torrealba, but if they can’t he could be a pretty decent option for the Rays. Yorvit turned down a 2/4.5M deal from Colorado so they may pony up more or just say screw it and roll with what they’ve got. He had a .316 wOBA last year, while I have the average ML catcher at .317 so he was a basically league average bat. Over his career it’s at .307. The 31-year old threw out 14% of his would-be thieves last year (yuck), but that number is at 29% over his career. For what it’s worth his range factor was 8.8 last year. Could be an upgrade over Navi for the same money, but not a great leap forward.

One scenerio I was thinking about today

is trading Crawford back to his native texas rangers. If you think about what we need most, a young first baseman and catcher top the list. What about a package starting with Smoak and one of Salty/Teagarden/Ramirez? That would be pretty sweet to kill two major needs with one trade, with bullpen help as the lone area of concern. Maybe throwing in CJ Wilson too?

Can anyone think about which teams we match up best with

in regards to a possible Crawford trade? In thinking any team we traded Crawford two would have to meet three criteria 1) Budget to afford him and sign to possible longterm deal 2) Need for a leftfielder 3) Have pieces the Rays need (young catcher, first baseman, reliever, etc)

The reason reason the Rangers came to mind is that they have the young players we desire, a vacancy in left field, and Crawford is from Texas. However, as RJ pointed out, they might not have the budget to keep Crawford.

Can anyone think of any teams the Rays match up really well with for a potential Crawford trade? Maybe the Giants?

Angels have a few players I like

Brandon Wood and Napoli. With the way the Angels have played around with Wood the last few years, I would think some of the top prospect shine has washed off. They also seem to really like Mathis behind the plate. He started just about as many games as Napoli last year. I don’t really have any feel for what would be a fair trade when it comes to this, so would this be ripping the Angels off? I know RJ says to add another player if you feel comfortable with it, so would we have to throw in a young arm too?

by Barnese and Bailey Circus on Nov 22, 2009 12:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Using the ML SS baseline that I established (.322 wOBA) his .292 wOBA was worth -10.3 runs (about a win in the wrong),

BUT, if you weight his last 3 years of UZR at 2/3/5 (-0.1/9.7/14) you get a weighted average of 9.89. Add all that up and divide by 10 to convert to wins, and he’s exactly a Major League average SS at 0.0 wins. For a team that emphasizes defense, he is a great player, and likely priced at or below market value. I remember playing the M’s last year and every single game I was frustrated that nothing would fall. It’s not as sexy as the dinger, but I’ll take fundamental defense all day.

I hope we bat him leadoff all year and he continues to slash at .329/.389/.490 that he put up for the year

Or you can look at the slash he put up as a leadoff of .303/.398/.463 Pretty good. I’m more inclined to think that he will be the guy that has slashed .287/.350/.394 over 2,269 ML PA’s (.282/.374/.408 in 368 as a leadoff). Continue to value him as if last year is his true-talent level, because I can’t wait to tell you ‘I told you so.’

* The Rays are said to be interested in discussing a long-term extension with Carl Crawford. If the team does decide to move him, however, the Mets and Braves have expressed interest.
    * The Rangers and White Sox are among the teams interested in acquiring B.J. Upton.
    * Executive VP Andrew Friedman on his team’s offseason targets: “We have a list of guys on other teams we have an interest in, and a list of free agents as well. And depending on how the market evolves on both fronts, it will go a long way toward shaping our thought process…. We feel like there are a lot of talented names out there.”
    * Smith notes that the Rays have a history of signing relievers who are coming off injuries or down years. He mentions Kevin Gregg and J.J. Putz as a couple of possibilities in that realm.
    * The club could be open to bringing back Gregg Zaun and giving last season’s catching platoon of Zaun and Dioner Navarro another try.

The White Sox and Braves seem like the most interesting fits for a Crawford trade

Sox could center a deal around Flowers and maybe Viciendo, and Braves could offer Freeman in a trade. Mets dont seem like they have anything we want and im not even sure if the Indians would be interested, although I really like Santana.

Braves: Freeman 1B and Kimbrel RP
Mets: Davis 1B and Thole C
Indians: Santana C
Rangers: Smoak 1B and Teagarden C
Mariners: Morrow RP and Moore C

It seems like the Indians have two good young catchers

So I could see them dealing one of Marson or Santana. Obviously Marson is the superior defender and came caller but the offensive potential of Santana makes me very excited. However, do the Indians even have any interest in Crawford and would they have the money to sign him?

AJ Pier is in the last year of a contract, just as Tyler Flowers is set to burst on the scene.

I think Kenny would have to get a lobotomy to trade Flowers. Kid has raked everywhere and doesn’t seem like a liability behind the dish.

Flowers just might be wishful thinking

However KW always seems to go with veterans over youth. Getting Flowers would be awesome though. To be honest, getting any one of Santana, Flowers, Freeman or Smoak would be awesome.

I almost wish

That Friedman just contacted all of the teams with baller young catchers and said whoever offers us a package that starts with that player, we can talk, otherwise dont bother. Find out who would actually be willing to give us one of those catchers, make it known whos in the game, and let them fight it out. Im talking about someone who tops this list http://www.scoutingbook.com/prospects/c

Does anyone else think if Crawford traded, its going to be sooner than later

Considering how many holes a Crawford trade could fill, it seems like if they are going to trade him, they would want to do that first so they know what areas still need to be addressed. For example, if they could get a good young catcher in such a deal, then it wouldnt make sense to pull the trigger on any other deals for a catcher (Doumit, Towles, etc). I just think Friedman needs to make up his mind and determine what path we are taking with Crawford. If history has taught us anything, such as with the Delmon Young trade which happened the 29th of November two years ago, Friedman doesnt like to wait around.

Honestly, I can see Upton traded for a young awesome C and perhaps a 1B prospect that smashes

Jennings called up early in season, CC signed for 4 year, option 5th year

1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Jeff Niemann 5. Wade Davis Coming Soon: Jeremy Hellickson

Does any team have those prospects just laying around?

The last time we brought up a great CF’er too early they named a disease after him, I’d probably hang on to Beej.

White Sox officially ink Omar Vizquel

Scott Merkin
1/1.375 isn’t bad for a guy that can play solidly anywhere in the IF. Something kind of funny that I heard at some point last year was that there were only 4 guys in the majors that started their careers in the 80’s. The list includes Vizquel, Sheffield, Griffey Jr. and Randall Johnson. Pretty crazy that Omar, might be of the most use to a team at this point. Anyways, R.J. had a great write-up on him over at FG if you want to know more:

Curiousity

If Crawford is traded for a catcher/1B prospect- Player? How does that affect the development of Luke Bailey, Nevin Ashley, Cody Cipriano, Jeff Malm? Hmm

Why do you kill threads????

by Some other guy who does not care on Nov 24, 2009 3:30 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Not at all

Only because every organization needs more than just one or even two good prospects at every position and even then, very few of those good minor leaguers and former decent prospects will ever make it to the show, let alone actually contribute anything positive. You cant just count on a few guys and think your set. None of those guys you mentioned are sure things by any means or even close to the majors. Malm and Bailey, while they have good potential, havent even played a full season in the minors yet and Ashley and Cipriano are fringe prospects right now.

Further, the two areas that keep getting mentioned (catcher and first base) are of immediate concern as our major league options at catcher are hopeless at best and Pena will be a free agent in a year, with no successor in sight. Lastly, corner infield and catcher are our two weakest organizational positions, so adding to that depth will only help.

Alex Gonzalez and John McDonald signings indicate Scutaro will be moving on.

Ken Rosenthal In 2009, the Jays had one of the best SS positions of all the teams in the AL as I saw only the Yanks and Rays playing better at the position. These moves seem to show that Toronto is really hamstrung by the Vernon Wells contract and will not be able to make a key pickup until they are out from under it. With all the O’s talent coming up 5th place could be the Jays for their taking. A-Gon has put up a non-park-adjusted wOBA of 0.294 over the last 3-years (note he did not play in 2008) using a 2/3/5 scale (0.296/0.338/0.266). Using that same scale for his UZR over the last 3 seasons you would get a value of 2.3. He is a below-average hitter for his position, but does have some value with the glove. He seems like a slight upgrade over McDonald for $2.5M. McDonald can go back to being a super-utility glove, while being a drain at the plate. Coupled with rumors of Overbay on the block, that Jays infield is not going to be a pretty sight, even if Aaron Hill plays at the level he did in 2008.

Andruw Jones signs with Chicago White Sox

Bruce Levine
CHONE has him slashing at 0.226/0.322/0.414 over 394 AB’s. The article states that the Sox are not looking to use him everyday, but as a guy off the bench. In limited COF duty last year he showed a positive UZR, but that’s such a small sample that I don’t put much stock in it. It’s a 1/.5M deal, so it would be pretty hard for it not to be a good signing.

DeWayne Wise signs with Phillies

Matt Eddy
Wise, you may remember, saved Buehrle’s perfect game by snagging a sure homer. He will always be able to tell that story to his grand kids, which is good considering he won’t have to tell them what a poor hitter he is. CHONE projects a slash-line of 0.256/0.306/0.416. They may have an eye on using him as Ibanez’s personal caddy in LF, where he has a 6.5 UZR over 471 innings over his career. Ibanez was off to a great start in 2009, and could get the Burrell treatment that Charlie Manuel used in the past, in order to keep his legs fresh. This is a pretty good signing, IMO, though follows the trend we have seen thus far of teams making low-impact signings to fill holes.

is CC actually discussing a contract extension now or will the FO wait until mid-season or later?

so many mixed rumors floating around. I would love him to finish his career with the rays but the possibilities of that are <1%

he wants to discuss a deal during the offseason

if one isnt signed, he will test free agency

So according to rotoworld, McGee can be in our pen next season

That has real potential to bring in a basically free, very talented arm.

Of course, it would mean 3 lefties again with McGee, Howell and Choate/Swindle

Give me a CC long term deal, please!

An outsiders assessment of the Rays in 09 and moving forward

Tyler Hissey has a pretty nice write-up in part one. I can’t disagree with anything that he states. Keep an eye out for part 2 as he plans to look at hurlers and prospects.

I find this rather amusing- not funny
Dump those rediculous stats and talk baseball talk about players
not all this after the fact jibberish as used witj
the Tampa Bay overview…ops, war, etc, you’ll
probably have a numerical formula for Etc now,
its embarrasing to read that useless numbers
stuff….how could you not have Bartlett
projected to what he did in 09′ ? The numbers,
thats why

Why do you kill threads????

Here's another one looking at The Bartlett Situation

Tyler Hissey, again, takes an interesting look at Jason Bartlett. It’s a great article for those that are less centered in the Rays-verse as most of this stuff we have been talking about for some time. IMO his source listed in the last paragraph is impeccable.

Aww
Dealing him if the return makes it worthwhile—Sandy Kazmir had a fine post about what Bartlett could command back in August at DRaysBay—will free up payroll and allow the club to potentially improve in other areas. With contention within grasp, moving him will be difficult, but, by holding onto him, Tampa Bay runs the risk of having his value fall off and eliminating any hope of cashing him in for a nice package of cheap, team-controlled players who could help out elsewhere.

Who is this Sandy Kazmir guy?

wasnt offered arbitration. Theres a solid bullpen arm that will cost money but no picks

Give me a CC long term deal, please!

Still going to be looking for more money than we are offering though

I still really hope Friedman finds a way of adding two late inning relievers on incentive laden deals, two of Escobar, Callero, Putz, Donnelly, Benoit, etc would be awesome imo. Especially someone like Escobar, Benoit, and Putz who have closing experience and can hold down the closing position if healthy allowing Howell to move back into the bullpen ace role.
