Dewayne Staats Agrees to Contract Extension

KenDavidoff  Intruding on territory of @sportswatch - Dewayne Staats has signed a contract extension with the #Rays. Will call 5,000th game in '10.

This is great news. Staats began calling games for the Rays when they originally began play. His voice (and hairdo) are trademark with the team. I don't think it's a stretch to call him the Voice of the Rays. More Staats is good Staats, although hopefully he lessens the amount of fly ball outs that receive the home run call treatment.

Can we decline the option on Kevin Kenneday now?

Use Kalas for home games and Anderson on the road

Did well

Came in in a a jam, had an 8 pitch or so walk, then induced a weak groundout to end the inning. Next inning, he induced a ground ball right in front of the plate. A lineout to right, and the a strikeout looking. Worked off a fastball, changeup and breaking pitch. Fastball was 94.

Saw it live

He’s pretty damn short

When he missed, he missed up. His slider did not look that great but his fastball was hitting 92-94 on the in park gun consistently both innings. He threw nearly all fastballs in the appearance.

Most impressive = Taylor Scheppers and Danny Gonzalez of the Rangers. Scheppers was throwing an easy 98-99 and Gonzalez throws 94-97 with a 73mph 12-6 curveball. They were both nasty
