It would appear that Raffy's homer-prone tendancies come mostly against lefties, any chance that we use him in

much the same role he was in last year. Would be interesting to see dual-firemen that can come in anywhere in the 7th-9th if it’s a high leverage siutation.

This is pretty interesting:

well he gets paid through arb no matter what

6.5-9 million are the arb estimates I have seen. I expect he has no reason to discount from that, so contract will have to at least be at the low end of those figures for the player to agree. So why wouldn’t the player just be content with going to arbitration?

You really don't know what the hell you're talking about here.

Jimbo, as mentioned hasn’t had any real power before a week or so ago and he fired damn near the entire defensive staff.

His offense was the best in the ACC and when Ponder was healthy was Top-10 nationally and probably Top-5.

What did they do the last 5 years with the best recruiting class in the ACC every year? Do you know anything about football recruiting? Stars don’t equal talent. They equal offers. Maybe if FSU developed some talent it might be different.

by rglass44 on Dec 10, 2009 12:40 PM EST up reply actions

No agreed

that has been the problem obviously, you just don’t know anything about what’s going on at FSU now and are just assuming it will be the same as it was under Bowden.

Of course not

It’s just I probably have more hope for jimbo than you do, because of the offenses i’ve witnessed under other coaches and what he has been able to do, and whoever our D coordinator is will do better (not better than Andrews) but better than last year.

Why?

It seems that everyone is better. FSU was great when they had 2 competitors on the greatest mine of talent in the nation. Now everyone has players from Florida.

I'm a writer.

by Andy Hellicksonstine on Dec 10, 2009 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

Eh

True but FSU wasnt bad long enough to lose a stranglehold on the state of Florida. Look at UF. Four bad years under Zook, kick in the ass from Meyer, and theyre right back on top. Kids from FL flock to UF, FSU, and Miami. Just the way it is cus they still get you to the NFL as well as any school in the country.

by BJ the Bossman on Dec 10, 2009 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

Also FSU continues to have great recruiting classes

since Bowden left FSU has shot up from like #35 to top 15 (9 on ESPN), but like glass said we still need to change the past and develop these players.

by CubFanRaysaddict on Dec 10, 2009 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

FSU's never gotten quite bad enough to completely become a laughing stock

And that’s unfortunate. There was so much animosity among the Bowden holdovers last year (especially Amato), more than was reported. Addition by subtraction, although Jimbo really hasn’t done much with the offense yet.

by gatorman2k2 on Dec 10, 2009 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree about the offense

offensive effeciency stats were off the charts with Ponder, and not bad with EJ Manuel, also you probably know this but Amato punched Fisher on a plane this year, so that got more out into the open also.

the ghost of stokes, camp, lugo strikes TB-sept 2009

by CubFanRaysaddict on Dec 10, 2009 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, the punch is out there

But Bobby was pretty loyal to his boys and never got any of that stuff “fixed” and there were other incidents. Friend of a friend thing. Chucky will be coaching high school somewhere next year, maybe. FSU with Ponder scared me as a Gator fan… the first half of 09 was the only period during Jimbo’s tenure when their offense was close to their “standard”. If they don’t beat the Gators in ’10 at Doak, they never will.

by gatorman2k2 on Dec 10, 2009 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

haha

ya, no doubting how good the Gators are/will be again. I’d give Jimbo until ‘11 to make any judgments as head coach though, and like you said the jury is still kind of out there on the offense. Most important thing is the D, Tebow’s tears couldn’t heal those wounds.

Please go up and read the link I posted about the offense

I dont see why people dont think the offense was good. With Ponder, it was top 15 in the country. And we only lose Caz

by BJ the Bossman on Dec 10, 2009 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

Note my reply above

The offense was pretty good with Ponder, but the first half of this year is the first time the FSU offense was anything close to good under Jimbo. However, with so many back on the O next year, they should be respectable to good on offense. 10-2 or 7-5 depends on how well they replace Mickey Andrews’ scheme.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but a -10 UZR SS = 0 UZR LF, right? The numbers might need to be tweaked somewhat, but the point stands.

by Andy Hellicksonstine on Dec 10, 2009 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

I don't understand what you're saying.

Look at the positional spectrum. Just about anyone can play COF and play it better than their current position. It’s not hard to move from second/third/short to left field and perform well with the glove. Not many 3B/2B/OF are moving to short and doing well.

by R.J. Anderson on Dec 10, 2009 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

Depends on how good you are at defense.

Generally speaking though, I think it’s more common to see a replacement level shortstop starting for a contender than a replacement level corner outfielder.

Also, I don't even want to imagine how stupid the reaction from this area would be.

Bullpen shows Rays want team depth

The Rays appear to know more than many that team depth is what keeps you going through a 162 game season. The minor league depth and platoons help the team keep plugging along in case of injury. At short there’s Brignac. At second there’s Zobrist/Sean-Rod/Brig, at OF there’s CC/Upton/Joyce/Kapler/Jennings etc…pitching depth and now relief depth.

This is important for a team like the Rays that can’t afford replacements like other teams if someone gets hurt. Depth is what keeps this team going. And getting Soriano gave late-game depth to pair with Howell, thus making the rest of the bullpen stronger.

Does that mean he has to earn it by playing or performing to a certain goal?

I don't think that's how it works in MLB

I’m pretty sure, in MLB, it just means that if he makes the roster, he gets paid, but if he’s cut during spring training he wouldn’t, and if he gets sent down to AAA, he would get AAA salary and not major league salary. All contracts become guaranteed once the season starts.

If someone's been around for long enough

and they’re not on the AAA roster, than another team can take him. No need to clear through waivers to send to a lower level in the AAA/AA portions – the team just keeps him.

Wlodarczyk had his moments early in his career, but he’s old and his velocity (and effectiveness) have dropped. No huge loss.
