Report: Milton Bradley "Close" to Being Dealt; Potentially to the Rays

[Note by R.J. Anderson, 12/10/09 4:08 PM EST ]

TBrownYahoo

If Bradley trade is close, it's not to Rays.

---

So say Bob Nightengale's latest Tweet:

BNightengale #mlb #cubs Cubs officials say they are close to trading OF Milton Bradley, and all indications are that he'll be going to Tampa Bay.

Let's see who blinked.

So if this goes through

The Rays added ~3-4 wins just today, love this FO.

Also around ~10 million in salary.

This is going to be a key season for attendance.

Horrible

but the Cubs kinda lost me a few years ago anyway, so screw ’em, the Cubs OF defense is going to be epically bad, if they trade PtB they will have to eat another 75% of his contract, Cubs are screwed regardless might as well make my hometown team better.

If they end up with a Burrell-Cameron-Fukudome outfield

as anticipated, Cameron and Fukudome cover enough ground that they can be shifted a bit and hide some of Burrell’s defensive shortcomings.

1000 if we could afford

another 2-3 Sorianos, I think we can get Alfonso, and the Nats have a minor league 2B named Francisco Soriano so it could happen.

you’re on record for saying Pat’s going to be bad in Chicago (Defense etc..), how much of his contract do you imagine the Cubs will have to eat to trade him, any idea or not thinking that far ahead?

They have to do this deal though.

We’re the only trading partner and he’s burned all of his bridges in Chicago. There really is no alternative. I would be shocked if Bradley isn’t a Ray in the next week. Probably more like 12-36 hours.

think the conversation will end something like this.....

cubs: MB for PtB and you take on $10 of MB’s salary
rays: hmmm, how about MB for PtB and we take on $5 of MB’s salary
cubs: what? no way…..we have to get more in return
rays: fine. we’ll throw in 2 hams, 1 this christmas and 1 next.
cubs: Honey glazed?
rays: hmmm. ok.
cubs: DONE!

I think we need a real investigation into this

Pat Burrell -——> Milton Bradley
Jesse Chavez -——> Rafael Soriano

I guess we will sign Darren Oliver after all

by joeybw on Dec 10, 2009 3:22 PM EST reply actions

This is a big season for Burrell...

I think he’ll have a nice bounce back season. He’s in a FA year, and he knows he wont get squat in free agency if he doesnt perform. His projections on fangraphs peg him around an 800 ops… that being said, I think bradley is a superior player and will help the team more, not only this season, but in 2011 as well.

The Rays have upgraded cather and bullpen….adding Bradley and one more reliever like Calero would make this offseason incredible(on paper, or in RJ’s calculator).

by td32 on Dec 10, 2009 4:25 PM EST reply actions

this offseason is looking good on paper and it's not even half over!

JH: Jesus Christ, lets leak one more time we're close to moving him to someone that is not the Rays in hopes AF will bite. I really don't want to eat 75% of his 2011 salary.

AF: That dumbass really thinks we’ll bite on that shit? Now I’m going to make him pay 100% of 2011.

I'm a Brett Favre honk so FUCK YOU!

by PriceMultiCyYoungs on Dec 10, 2009 4:26 PM EST reply actions

Would it be shocking if AF eventually resorted to an ultimatim card?

As exciting as Bradley would be to have, if the Rays think Burrell’s performance this year was a fluke and not the norm, they can’t want Bradley THAT bad; I’m perfectly content with Burell in 2010. Bradley’s an upgrade, but I find it nearly impossible to believe that Burrell can be equal to or worse then last year.

I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.

by kericr on Dec 10, 2009 4:48 PM EST up reply actions

Except almost everyone on the team hates Burrell, but yeah, I don't think his performance will be complete dreck again.

I wonder

if anyone is buying hendry’s bullshit?

by PhillyRays on Dec 10, 2009 4:31 PM EST reply actions

I knew this was bull....

Reports are saying now that if a trade is close, it’s not with the Rays. I would like Bradley, but good lord I’m tired of hearing about it. Trade him already Chicago.

by MillaBucsMagicRays on Dec 10, 2009 4:47 PM EST reply actions

This is getting dull

There’s only one team actively in play for Bradley and that’s the Rays. No matter what hendry wants to say or how many teams he wants to say are interested or how much bullshit he leaks to the media, nothing is going to change that. If anything, all he’s doing is killing what little leverage he had left. Why would AF pay more than 75% of 2011 now when not one other team is in play for MB? Hendry is 100% dumbass.

by PhillyRays on Dec 10, 2009 4:53 PM EST reply actions

Agreed. I don't think there's another team at all. Why would there be some "mystery team" all of a sudden (again) when the Rays are the obvious only bidders.

The only team I could think of is the Mets, and they wouldn’t have to keep that secret. It’s just Hendry being an asshat.

by Thaddeus? on Dec 10, 2009 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

he cant play the OF once in the while like Bradley

he sucks out there and hes slow

plus his offense has taken a big hit, he wouldnt give us much.

Um, no it's not.

Go read The Book. Hitters lose more than 10 runs of offense by moving from a defensive position to DH.

I'm sick

of hearing about Milton Bradley. The Rays should just keep PtB for this season, and give CC an extension with the money that will be coming off the books.

If SRod shows he can hit ML pitching, move him, Zobrist or Joyce to 1B. Bring up Jennings for 2011 season and move BJ to RF. Use the money saved after Pena to give Garza and Zobrist contract extensions.

Maybe bring back Rocco on a lower dollar deal to DH/1B/OF
