Tampa Bay Rays Name Stan Boroski Assistant Pitching Coach
Presser:
Boroski, 46, joins the Rays from the Houston Astros, where he has served as either a coach or scout during the past 18 years including the last three seasons as pitching coach for the Corpus Christi Hooks (AA) in the Texas League.
"Stan brings a nice versatility to the position," said Hickey. "In addition to having been on the field as a pitching coach for the past 12 years, his scouting experience gives us another set of eyes from the stands. The fact that he was drafted as a position player also provides a unique perspective."
A native of Ohio, Boroski was the pitching coach for the Salem Avalanche (A), the Astros' affiliate in the Carolina League, from 2003-06. He served in the same capacity for Michigan (A) in the Midwest League for two seasons and had previously been a coach with the Astros' Gulf Coast League and Appalachian League affiliates. He served as a scout from 1991-93 and combined coaching and scouting duties at various other times during his career with the Astros.
Boroski was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers as a catcher out of Buckeye South High School in Tiltonsville, Ohio, in 1981 and spent three seasons in the Brewers system. In 1985, he was signed as a pitcher by the Kansas City Royals and remained in that organization for four years. Boroski has a degree in biology from Ohio University and resides in St. Cloud, Fla., with his wife, Carol, and two children, Sarah and Clayton.
He replaces Brian Anderson, who will serve as color commentator on approximately 50 Rays games telecast on FSN Florida and Sun Sports in 2010.
Emphasis mine.

Only 50 games.
Meaning someone else is doing 100 or so.

Isn't that about what BA did last year?
This seems like a ringing endorsement of the Hickster, going back to the Stros organization.

Can't wait until someone says fire Boroski.

The ladies of the Trop
would be in an uproar if they don’t get a little Kalas-on-crowd action.
Hooray for CubsStats.blogspot.com !
Wow, I can't tell you how many times I have watched the Rays last year and said
you know what they need, is a better assistant pitching coach.
Blah!

Sure sound's like hes back
Why else would BA be doing just 50 games? KK was contracted for 100 games last year.

Kalas is good in the booth--pretty gay as a roving reporter
Maybe Joe’s coming back
Dan Wheeler had 5.02% of PA vs him wind up in HRs
For perspective:
League leading Pena hit HR in 6.82%
Longo 4.88%
Zobrist 4.46%
Yes, Wheeler is essentially facing a lineup full of 30 HR hitters

What was the Avg RS/HR?

I don't really consider this something he can control though.

I just figure that having an ultra low walk rate should count for something
Giving up solo homers once every 20 batters isn’t as bad as 2-3 run dingers every 30 batters. Obviously, not everything he gives up is a solo homer, but yeah.

it's not that bad
1.4/1.5 last 3 years, at least he’s averaging almost a solo home. How many grand slams has Wheels allowed in his career?
Further more, has he lost weight?
I do like how he can step it up though, was it ALCS game 2 where he pitched 3 scoreless innings when he was used to only 1 inning? And man, we needed that game.
Fire and Ice: Rafael Soriano and J.P Howell.......with their side kick Grant the aussie Balfour!
Percival: 1.5 in 2008.
Yeah, this seems irrelevant.

Ultra small sample sizes all around, but you would have to think something like WHIP, as bad as it is, could factor in here

I don't know, I've always marveled at how Catfish Hunter could be so good and so homer prone at the same time

Or against lefties.
Balfour is better overall. If we grab Escobar, Wheeler becomes the fifth best in the pen. That’s pretty great.

I mean using the FIP components, 4 walks roughly equals a homer
So it would be slightly worse to have a 0.0BB/9 and a 1.0 HR/9 vs. a guy that has a 4.0BB/9 and a 0.0HR/9

The saving grace of Wheelz is few walks
His fly balls are his best and worst friend. He has an extremely low BABIP b/c flyballs are usually outs when they dont leave the park. And when they leave the bark they don’t count in BABIP.

I'm surprised we haven't been able to swing him to Detroit
They could use another good arm in the pen, he’s reasonably priced, and he would excel with that OF. The expansive grass, not the fielders.

Seems like he goes through stretches where he is really, really good though

06 he had a real good run that kept the overall down, but you're right that it seems like
he’s giving up more /9.

okay
Statts will do every game, BA will join him for 50 of the games. Let’s give the rest to Kalas
Fire and Ice: Rafael Soriano and J.P Howell.......with their side kick Grant the aussie Balfour!
Personally, I'd like to see Brian Nobbs get about 75-100 games

Kevin Kennedy was signed for 2 years
The original contract had him at 2 years (2009 and 2010), 110 games/year.
The decision to only do broadcasting was Brian Anderson’s.
