This makes no sense for the Cubs whatsoever, yet their fan base will be happy to have dealt the better player for someone who "isn't a cancer". Of course, that's selective memory because SIlva was quoted as wanting to choke a teammate -- presumably Ichiro of all people -- in 2008.
The Rays options from here are pretty simple. Either keep Burrell and allow him to bounce back, or trade him for salary relief and pursue another free agent DH.

The idea was to dump Milton and clear out salary. Now they add a terrible starter and end up paying even more.
I’ve said all along adding Milton would be a luxury not a necessity. Looked a Burrell’s numbers, and while scary, he’s been down before and rebounded. Plus it’s just one year.

Bradley costs $9M this year (as does Burrell) and then $12M the next year. So $27M v. $26M if they paid half of 2011 and all of 2010.

I don't think so.
Burrell would have been 9 mill, and Silva is $25 mill. So that’s $16 mill difference. Couldn’t they have essentially paid up to $16 and come out ahead? Unless they value Silva the player more than Burrell.
So what's the point?
Are the Cubs serious? Do they think Silva is $5 mill better than Burrell? $10 mill better? What was the final offer to the Rays?

As bad as Silva is, he's still more serviceable to the Cubs than Burrell
Where was Burrell going to play, and especially if they sign Byrd?
Where does Silva fit in?
Both are awful fits, with Burrell being the better baseball player. They could have traded for PtB, paid for most of Bradleys 2011, and done a salary dump trade of PtB and made out better from a cost standpoint.

I don’t get it. The Rays and Cubs were talking a Burrell for Bradley swap with the Cubs picking up an unspecified amount of 2011 (because Burrell would be a FA after 2010). OK so the specifics of each players contracts follow:
Bradley- 2010 9 mill, 2011 $12 mill. That’s 21 mill total.
Silva- 2010 11.5 mill, 2011 11.5 mill, 2012 2 mill buyout. That’s 25 mill total.
Burrell- 2010 9 mill. That’s 9 mill total.
So the Cubs took on 4 more mill. to get a terrible, terrible player. They could have sent Bradley for Burrell and given the Rays up to 16 mill and it would have cost less for the Cubs. What am I missing?
It sucks having a GM who can only think one step at a time, right?

How is it even a choice?
The Rays options from here are pretty simple. Either keep Burrell and allow him to bounce back, or trade him for salary relief and pursue another free agent DH.
If we can get the salary relief, we’re probably better off DHing S-Rod or Aybar, much less signing someone like Cust who’s available and cheap.
