Kelvim Escobar's Winter League Debut Delayed; Should Pitch Tomorrow
Per this Tweet from Efrain Zavarce:
K. Escobar no lanzó hoy por la dominante salida de J. Simontacchi (retiró a los últimos 17 que enfrentó). Quedará prevenido para mañana.
In English: Escobar didn't throw today because of a dominant outing by Jason Simontacchi. Simontacchi actually retired the final17 batters he faced. Instead, Escobar will remain prepared to pitch in tomorrow's game, presumably as a reliever. So, another day of wait, but at least we now know that managers in winter leagues buy into the hot hand theory too. I cannot guarantee dropping that last sentence in casual conversation will do much for your social standing.

they are now playing to get to the postseason. They have two closers for these very dramatic games. So Escobar will be held. If there is a secure game, he´ll pitch, or if the club is out of race. But do not expect him to picth if the club is fighting for a spot in post season and if the games are too close. Regular season ends next tuesday in Venezuela. And his manager is Luis Sojo (Tampa/Yankees manager). They are 1 game to tie the post season spot.
I am wondering how many teams are watching him
Only one confirmed are the Rays but I am sure teams like the Mets, Red Sox, Mariners, Cubs, etc will be there
Fire and Ice: Rafael Soriano and J.P Howell.......with their side kick Grant the aussie Balfour!
Rays, Yankees, Twins, Cubs, Brewers, Giants, Pirates, Tigers, Mariners, & A's.
Mind you, those were the teams at the throwing session, so I’m not quite sure who will be attending his live action game.

With all the interested teams, I just can't see us ponying up the money.
You can almost guarantee that someone like the Mets or Cubs will overpay. If not them, the Mariners or Yankees could offer up more as well.
My exact thought
Strange set of circumstance for him to fall into our lap
maybe some teams are tired of waiting for him and the Rays are patient
….it’s possible
the amount they pay is based on how much faith they have in Sonny
Fire and Ice: Rafael Soriano and J.P Howell.......with their side kick Grant the aussie Balfour!
we were very patient with Bradley
not out fault those idiots wanted Silva
Fire and Ice: Rafael Soriano and J.P Howell.......with their side kick Grant the aussie Balfour!
dude the hell will anyone do with Silva?
Fire and Ice: Rafael Soriano and J.P Howell.......with their side kick Grant the aussie Balfour!
+9M or whatever the cash was
It’s a better deal for them. They can always put him in the pen where he will be not much worse than league average.

Okay now I understand
Luis Sojo knows what he’s doing and is a winner. We’ll just have to wait for Escobar’s turn.
I had no idea Sojo was the manager, but he's the same guy who started Carlos Silva over Felix in the WBC.
Calling him a winner is a bit much.

Career wins coming into 09 Silva 59, Felix 39
Clearly Luis Sojo can spot a winner when he sees one.

Sojo is not a winner, but also not a looser. Until yesterday, as a manager, he´s Games: 335 W: 162 L:173 Ave: .486. With Tampa A he was the champion this year. In winter ball:
2005-06 22 10 12 .455 Clasificó 2do de la división
2005-06 RR 16 7 9 .438 4to lugar
como manager solamente:
JJ JG JP
2006-07 post season
2006-07 post season
2007-08 post season
2007-08 post season
2007-08 he reached the final. Lost in 7 games.
2008-09 post season
2008-09 post season
2009-10 he´s one game to post season (also, one game to be eliminated)
In the WBC he chooses Silva over Felix with good results. Still, for winter ball he still have to prove that he can win it all. They play today at 4 against Magallanes -first place team. keep you posted
yep. Also, I have to add that Sojo, in winter ball, have a team with:
J López (Mariners)
Luis Valbuena (Cleveland)
Alcides escobar (Milwakee)
Jolbert Cabrera (8 seasons in MLB)
and he´s still fihgting for Post Seaon.
by the way: RAYS scauts in Venezuela are also looking to ROMULO SANCHEZ. This is a very good reliever, had a bad outcome with the Pirates in 2008, but in Winter Ball is showing control and velocity. A good pick for a team like the rays: young and cheap. In Barquisimeto there is a buzz about him wiht the Rays.
Ah damnit
Padres are thinking about trading Gonzalez, pleasssssssse not to the Red Sox. Sorry Pena, I know you won a gold glove 2 years ago but we need to put him at DH and get Gonzalez!
Fire and Ice: Rafael Soriano and J.P Howell.......with their side kick Grant the aussie Balfour!
Not according to this
This morning, ESPN’s Jayson Stark told WJAB Radio in Portland, Maine that he was told by sources all throughout the winter meetings not to buy into any talk of Adrian Gonzalez being dealt this winter.
Better yet just trade Pena to someone and trade for Gonzalez
Padres would want Hellickson or Jennings with other prospects included. Not sure who wants Pena for one season at 10.25 million Giants? Mets?
well they can both use the 1B if they have the money
but I cant stomach lose Jennings or Hellickson although the second I saw Gonzalez in a Rays uniform, I would forget about them
Fire and Ice: Rafael Soriano and J.P Howell.......with their side kick Grant the aussie Balfour!
It's just not the Rays way
Gonzalez would be here for two years top. The Rays would rather have a top prospect for 6 years of control for less money.
I would be curious to see this from a saber perspective....
Two years of an elite 1st baseman vs a top 20 pitching propsect, and some additional prospects. I would imagine that Gonzo at $10 million for 2 season may be a better value.
I'm not as good at this as some others hear on the site...
But here is my shot. Let’s assume Gonzo is worth 10 wins the next 2 seasons. That’s about $50 million in value. So he nets out $40 million, not too mention whatever draft picks the Rays get for him counts for about $5.5 million according to Victor Wang.
Per Victor Wang a top pitching propsect is worth around $15 million. A top hitting prospect like Jennings is worth closer to $32 million.
So if it was a deal centered around Hellickson, and 2 more prospects in the #5-8 range(in the Rays system), this would appear to be a good move.
Hopefully someone better at this then me, can help clean this up wherever it’s needed.
im a huge Jennings and Hellickson fan but I agree 100%
Gonzalez (with his salary) is prob the best 1B to have in baseball. He doesn’t make buckets of money like Cabrera and Pujols.
Fire and Ice: Rafael Soriano and J.P Howell.......with their side kick Grant the aussie Balfour!
not to mention if he can hit 40 in Petco, how crazy would he go with us?
Fire and Ice: Rafael Soriano and J.P Howell.......with their side kick Grant the aussie Balfour!
He's probably worth a top hitting prospect.
But I wouldn’t trade Jennings or Beckham for him.

Hmmm...
You wouldnt do Beckham? You heard anything positive about him lately? I’m a little worried about him….
If they signed Escobar
Do you think the Rays would still go after Calero?
Then again I never said I was a genius.....

Ummm, the hell? ......... Johnny Damon?
In a separate article, Davidoff examines the next move for Johnny Damon. Davidoff lists the Braves, Rays, Cubs, and Mets as possible destinations, but concedes there are roadblocks in each case.

RUGGIANO COULD BE SEND HOME
Justin is doing not very good in winter ball with LEONES. So far : Ruggiano, Justin CF Games 20
B 69
R 7
H 17
2H 1
3B 0
HR 2
RBI 4
BB 8
SO 21 .
AVE 246
He´s playing for the most popular team in Venezuela (Caracas). They are already in the post season and rumors said that they don´t want him back in January. Look at the K´s.
RUGGIANO OUT
he´s not in the Line up today. Rays have to be careful with winter league. (Leones is Rays afilliate) They play to win, not to prepare players. If they are not doing well, they are sent home. it was obvios that Ruggiano was working in his swing and straike zone. But you don´t go to winter ball to work in your problems. You have to do good.
Last check of the score Magallanes 10 Lara 2 in 5th
Sojo has used four pitchers already but not Escobar.
he will
no reason not to. even if he sucks, the game is over
Fire and Ice: Rafael Soriano and J.P Howell.......with their side kick Grant the aussie Balfour!
could let him pitch a couple of innings
If he doesn’t let Escobar pitch tonight I will officially say Sojo sucks.
if he grew a brain since using Silva in place of Felix
he will give him a certain pitch count and hopefully, he gets 2 innings in
Fire and Ice: Rafael Soriano and J.P Howell.......with their side kick Grant the aussie Balfour!
I forgot that
But maybe the M’s told him to do that.
Thanks for the update
Was that the 7th inning?
Okay here the recap of bottom of 7th
Magallanes Bottom 7th
Pitcher Change: Kelvim Escobar replaces Andrew Lorraine.
Erold Andrus pops out to third baseman Tom Evans.
Reegie Corona walks.
Pablo Sandoval lines out to right fielder Robert Perez.
Richard Hidalgo reaches on throwing error by pitcher Kelvim Escobar. Reegie Corona to 2nd.
Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Ezequiel Carrera replaces Alex Escobar.
Ezequiel Carrera called out on strikes
that´s it.
Only one inninh (the 8th) . 1BB , 1K, . 13 pitch. Good command. He looks confident. Remember, this guy has almost two years without pitching. Kind of late for Lara though, they look like they are not going to the post season.
Hope he signs with the rays (he has friends in Tampa Bay area)
Recap I see shows 7th
Was his top pitch at 92?
ok we have proof his arm is still attached
now sign him
Fire and Ice: Rafael Soriano and J.P Howell.......with their side kick Grant the aussie Balfour!
They took Escobar out
He only pitched the 7th. Can’t we wait until he pitches in another game or will it be too late?
Darren Oliver - Rangers
ok Halo’s, time to lose another pitcher to us
Fire and Ice: Rafael Soriano and J.P Howell.......with their side kick Grant the aussie Balfour!
Are we really tracking Kelvim friggin' Escobar this closely...?
…Or perhaps I should be more confused over Simontacchi getting top billing?
