The Candidates: 

Quinton McCracken(1998-2000), Brett Abernathy(2001-2003), Jorge Cantu (2004-2007), Jorge Valandia (2007), Evan Longoria(2008-2009), Felix Escalona(2002-2003), Jason Smith(2002-2003)

Quinton McCracken played in 210 games where he had 220 hits, 44 doubles, 8 triples, 8 homeruns, 79 RBIs, and batted .277.

Brent Abernathy  was traded by the Toronto Blue Jay, in 2000, for Mark Guthrie and Steve Trachsel. Abernathy would play in 198 games where he would have 194 hits, 35 doubles, 5 triples, 7 homeruns, 73 RBIs, and batted .251.

Jorge Cantu would play in 332 games where he would have 343 hits, 83 doubles, 4 triples, 44 homeruns, 200 RBIs, and batted .278. Cantu was traded in 2007 to the Cincinnati Reds along with Shaun Cumberland for Calvin Medock and Brian Shackelford.

Jorge Velandia played in 14 games where he had 16 hits, 4 doubles, 2 homeruns, 4 RBIs, and batted .320.

Evan Longoria played in 279 games where he had 286 hits, 75 doubles, 2 triples, 60 homeruns, 198 RBIs, 16 stolenbases,  batted .277, was an All-Star in 2008 and 2009, won the Rookie of the Year award in 2008, won the Gold Glove for AL Third Basemen in 2009, and won the Silver Slugger award in 2009.  

Jason Smith wore "3" for 1 game in 2003 where he had 1 hit and batted .250.

Felix Escalona wore "3" for part of the 2003 season where he palyed in 10 games and batted .185.

I think it's pretty clear that

Jason Smith has built a legacy that no “flash in the pan” player named Longoria will ever be able to over shadow. It’s just a fact.
