From Kevin Goldstein's chat at BP today

"Philosopher (Chicago): Which current MLB player would you compare Tim Beckham to? Do you think he's a "high risk, high reward" type of prospect?

Kevin Goldstein: Perfect world projection? Barry Larkin."

That would please me greatly.

Essentially that’s Jeter with great defense.

I've heard that comparison before(no not from PBrady)
[Comment From Jason (Sandy Kazmir)]
15 sounds incredibly high for Beckham at this time, do people see him as the next Hanley?

R.J. Anderson: What is Beckham’s ceiling though?

 Tommy Rancel: Barry Larkin

I said it first. :<

Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.

Georgia HS shortstop Tim Beckham – described as a guy with “tools out of the roof”, perhaps the next Barry Larkin?

I was one of the first to tab him as the next Larkin

Tyler will vouch for me. I saw him several times in HS he reminded me eerily of him.

Hello.

were Larkin's wrists as quick/strong as Beckham's?

I like the Larkin comp, but Larkin had only one season of 20 homers, and one 33 homer season… and he was all over with SBs… reaching as high as 51… usually between 30-51 when healthy,… Is Tim gonna run that much? according to what I’ve read, he’s no BOSSMAN/Carl… Larkin’s avg line is .295/.371/.444 … I think beckham looks more like a less contact but higher SLG player… he is going to fill out some, and he already reminds me of Soriano at the plate… though obviously if he reaches Soriano’s power, that would be hitting his ceiling ceiling… I think he’ll end up in the middle of Soriano/Larkin if all goes right.

Soriano’s career line is .282/.329/.518 …. I don’t think SLG .475-.480 is out of reach for Timmy. of course this is a long way off but I really like his swing/body (no homo)

I have a feeling that if he reaches Soriano's power, he's going to have Soriano's fielding prowess.

Good defensive shortstops just don’t have tons and tons of power. A-Rod might have been an exception if he stayed at SS; otherwise, the current record holder for most homers from a SS is 347 by Cal Ripken Jr.

and it took him over a million games to hit that many

Why yes, I am this big of an asshole in person.

by Sandy Kazmir on Feb 17, 2009 8:23 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

We don't need him to be a power guy

If he is gonna play SS I want him to be above average defensively there. Thats the most important thing. I am not worried about his power

We don't know what we need him to be yet

There’s a fairly good chance that by the time he gets here Burrell and Pena will be gone, if not more.

you gonna be the one to tell him not to hit the ball hard?

if a guy has the power, he’s going to do it. HRs=$$. All I’m saying is that he has really quick wrists… and he is young guy with an athletic frame, he will fill out. they all do

by daveh33 on Feb 17, 2009 8:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

why?

so addition of power=subtraction of defensive ability/instincts?
