I want a sausage basher jersey
Best $500 that Randall ever spent in his life! Poor Mandy!!
Joe
Wow
I didn’t even follow the action tonight, figuring it would be a foregone conclusion after last night’s bullpen implosion

Aybar makes the error that sends him home
but I am sure he isn’t happy about it
Evan Longoria and David Price - the fight for my heart
Willy Buckner?
Aybar returns to the team, blames Pena for not having played. Team chemistry destroyed.
I knew all along the WBC would come back to haunt the Rays.
Today, we are all Honkballers.
Holy cow, that was an amazing game
Go Netherlands! I feel bad for Aybar kinda, but man, what a game. I can’t help but root for them.

Their defensive efforts remind me of the Rays.
by R.J. Anderson on Mar 10, 2009 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, same here
They have literally no offense. But their pitching has been really solid and man, their defense has been nasty (except for some random misplays, like that sliding catch that the guy completely missed tonight).

Yeah, Kingsale wasn't thinking straight by not getting in front of that ball.
They did hit a few balls hard to left, Cruz was able to get underneath them though.

He doesn't have to make that play if
Marmol didn’t shit the bed
Evan Longoria and David Price - the fight for my heart
True
What’s this say about the Cubs’ bullpen this year? SSS alert, I suppose.

Marmol loaded them
and Eyre gave it up. This was after he hit a bunch of guys, including Aki, to bring in a run.
Speaking of hit batters, who hit Riggans in the chest that time, knocking him down? Was that Rodney?
He got Barty trying to bunt also
And that Putz(no I mean J.J Putz) is the one who hurt Longo
Evan Longoria and David Price - the fight for my heart
Aybar being his team mate as opposed to his oppenent wasn't enough to save him
Was he the one who gave up a GS to CC?
Evan Longoria and David Price - the fight for my heart
Let's get Aki back now
Sorry, I love Howell a lot but I can’t cheer against the US of A
Evan Longoria and David Price - the fight for my heart
It's good to see a European(ish) team advance
I really didn’t think it would happen this soon.

And fantastically: we get PitchFx data of the Netherlands pitchers next round.
Same with guys like Yu Darvish.
Oh and more Randall Simon.
Success.
I absolutely love that Randall Simon is their biggest name major leaguer on the team.
He’ll always be the Guy That Hit The Sausage to me.

Awesome thing is
he was given a tryout by the Brewers this spring. Not offered a contract, unfortunately. Could have made for some great promotions.

Haha! That's hilarious

9.5 seems too high, in retrospect.
5.5 seems more apt.

O/U
On defections before the tournament ends for Cuba??
Joe
That won't happen until they play in Miami/San Diego.
by R.J. Anderson on Mar 10, 2009 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions
Get the fish tacos ready...
San Diego won’t be the same when the Cubans hit town!!
Joe
They deliberately seeded them away from Miami
At least that’s my conspiracy theory. I bought a ticket strip back in November and was really looking forward to the possibility of U.S. v. Cuba in Miami…just to be part of the atmosphere/protests/etc.
by GomesSweetGomes on Mar 10, 2009 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Agreed
It was done for political purposes, because it would have been a hostile crowd in Miami if the Cubans were in that bracket. Putting them out west where the tensions are lessened is better for them.
Joe
Oh well
At least I’ll still be able to blare this at my tailgate
by GomesSweetGomes on Mar 10, 2009 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Cuba-US in Miami.
That would have been.. interesting.
Shocking that Selig would place politics (or anything else) ahead of money.
Wonder what the crowds will be like at Dolphin Stadium.
Today, we are all Honkballers.
I'm guessing good since USA will be there
Prob would have been better with the D.R. there.
It would have been interesting to hear the ‘nobody can tell me these games are meaningless’ line they are driving into the ground, and actually have it be accepted as true by most fans.
by GomesSweetGomes on Mar 10, 2009 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Wow
What an ending to that one! You know they have their beer flowing in Rotterdam and Amsterdam right now. They got themselves a nice trip to Miami at the end of the week!
Joe
Is there any advantage whatsoever in winning your pool?
Why shouldn’t teams sandbag tomorrow?
by GomesSweetGomes on Mar 10, 2009 10:37 PM EDT reply actions
So
It’s going to be the U.S., Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the Netherlands (Holland) going to Miami this weekend. Let’s bet the U.S. and Puerto Rico go out to L.A. for the finals
Joe
Is it just me
or are the WBC brackets thoroughly incomprehensible? I can understand kinda where teams are supposed to go, but I have no idea what happens to PR and the Netherlands after tomorrow night’s game. There’s very little in the way of direction on the brackets except for lots of tangled lines flowing everywhere…and then in some places there are no lines at all. Just odd.

There doesn't seem to be much of a point to tomorrow's game.
Both teams are advancing no matter what.
by R.J. Anderson on Mar 10, 2009 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions
Think that's bad?
Try following European soccer. Christ, it’s complicated.
I could be wrong though
by staplemaniac on Mar 10, 2009 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions
It's actually not once you get a visual representation.
Top teams go to the Champions League, if you lose in the early rounds there, you go to the UEFA Tournament (One tier down).
You’re in a group of four teams for round 1. 3 Points for a win, 1 for a tie. Top two teams in each group advance. In the knockout rounds, you play a home/away series. Highest aggregate score wins. Ties go to whoever had the most away goals.

i didnt watch the game. what happened on the error
was it a bad error or was it a tough play? details…
tough play
wasn’t originally a error, they changed it
Evan Longoria and David Price - the fight for my heart
Looked like a bit of a funny hop.
But I didn’t see a great angle.
by R.J. Anderson on Mar 10, 2009 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions
The turf is fast there
Or at least that’s how it’s looked. It was a hard hit ball and reached him really fast.

Not sure how this works usually
but since tomorrow is a off day, pretty sure we will see Aybar on Thursday
Evan Longoria and David Price - the fight for my heart
I agree
If you have advanced, why even play a game between the top two teams knowing you have advanced to the next site? Did Japan just “give” S. Korea a false win? If I am Japan, I don’t want to face Cuba right off the bat in the next round.
Joe
echoing others' sentiments...
GREAT game, better ending. had to root for the dutch since they remind me so much of the rays. “no one ever gave them a chance” is pretty much what everyone said about us all last year.
Very much agreed
They actually seem to bring excitement to the game rather than distracting from it. Baseball can be really good on tv when it’s used as more than a marketing tool for another sport.

Oh wow. This so hard.
Or more than a marketing tool for the next episode of "Frank TV" or "American Dad".
Today, we are all Honkballers.
not to mention that espn only ever shows the same teams, such as
the yankees, mets, red sox, cubs, and dodgers. just to name a few.
what a game
too bad for Marmol (and Aybar), also I thought it was funny the stadium played a techno version of ‘Adagio’ immediately after the game winning hit, a song that BBC readers ranked as the ‘saddest classical piece’. (just copy/pasting what I wrote on BCB)

Just looking forward to more 'honkballers stunten' headlines.
Space.
It's a problem we face.
So we never go anywhere.
We just stay in one place.
As much as know how important a "gentle" spring training is for him
I wish we had Balfour in the ’pen right now…
by AussieGriff on Mar 11, 2009 12:40 AM EDT up reply actions
Having him in there would help you guys out a lot.
I hope you don’t need him though. I’m pulling cause I met Trent Oeltjen last year and he was a cool dude.
Swav or Die.
Balf and Rowland-Smith would make a huge difference.
But I’ve been really pleasantly surprised by the offense. Would love a few more here, that one-run lead’s not looking real safe.
jeeze reply fail to follow a typo, I should stick with watching the game.
by AussieGriff on Mar 11, 2009 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions
There's two types of people that Willy Aybar hates.
People who are intolerant of other people’s culture…..and the Dutch.
by ReasonableDoubt on Mar 11, 2009 7:52 AM EDT reply actions
What a game!
I didn’t give the Dutch a chance, but they pitched a hell of a game. They got lucky as hell, too. DR gets eliminated despite giving up only one earned run in the tournament.
The WBC makes baseball in March so much more interesting. I may be warming up to this stupid tounament.
Why did the DR play the Netherlands twice?
In pool play that makes no sense. Shouldn’t each team play each tean in their pool one time?
