The group said it also hopes to address the possibility of renovating the Rays' current home, Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. The Rays hired stadium architect HOK Sport of Kansas City, Mo., to evaluate renovating Tropicana Field. A report could be available next month, Rays senior vice president Michael Kalt said Tuesday.

I've always been a proponent of renovating the Trop while relocating for a year
The only issue I see now is that their sites for temporary relocation would be limited. It wasn’t as big a deal one year ago, when attendance was much closer to that of a minor league ballpark, but now it could seriously disrupt their revenue streams.

Any ideas where they would go for a year?
I can’t think of any of the top of my head.

Raymond James, Citrus Bowl, UCF's Stadium
Not too many choices

Ray Jay would be uh.. interesting.
UCF would suck as would Citrus Bowl.

Those two locations would also suck
Because season-ticket holders would have to make a choice between losing their priority number and seriously adjusting their daily lives

Yes.
Which would piss off a lot of people.

Wide Word of Sports
It was suggested about two years ago IIRC.

That holds about 8k right?
They would probably want a bigger stadium than that.

9,500 it holds.
Still would want more.

If it's going to be someplace that small
Might as well be Al Lang.

Thats the way I see it.
Nice cozy place with probably the most historic baseball place in the county. No better way to honor that tradition than to continue the legacy.

Its probably also the place that would be most agreeable to allowing them to do temporary renovations to increase seating
There is space behind the outfield walls that could easily be converted from parking to temporary bleachers (though not so much in right field)

Uh, wut?
The Citrus Bowl can’t handle a baseball layout as the stands on the side are all concrete so there is no layout for it to work. On UCF’s campus, the baseball stadium is getting expanded to a 7500 seat stadium in hopes of adding a FSL team.
No relocation option anywhere

they gonna chop the rood off?
if not, don’t bother…

Meh.
In all honesty I think it’s better to start from scratch with a better location then to keep throwing money into the Trop.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane...
…I almost forgot how much I loved getting my pro-stadium sign stolen off my lawn 9 times.

I always thought the Trop was underrated
The people who don’t understand the need for an indoor stadium in Florida during the summer have never lived in Florida. If this renovating company can figure out a way to let a little sunlight into the Trop, I’d like that. If the new stadium doesn’t get built staying in a renovated Trop might not be a bad thing. Look at what Marlin fans go through at Pro Player. Rain delays and scorching heat.

Exactly...
I think anyone who has ever been to a FSL game in June or July loves the Trop.
Boom. Outta Here.

If the Arizona Cardinals can put a field on railroad tracks and wheel it in for games, we can come up with a solution to a little heat and humidity.

People fail to realize
that renovating the Trop would be exponentially more expensive compared to the efficiency of building a new stadium. Trust me I’m a grad-school Arch. major, it’s just not worth it. The time to build a new stadium is now when everything is relatively cheap and labor companies are dying to put workers on sites. I’ve seen some projects that would normally take 2 years be completed in almost half the time. It’s all because companies have more people to put on sites.
On a side note, the sail design is the first project that I’ve been even moderately attracted to from HOK…Usually not their side of the spectrum.

I totally agree....
I actually liked the idea of the waterfront where Al Lang is, but I just can’t stand the idea of tearing down Al Lang coupled with the fact that traffic would totally suck and there’s nowhere to park.
I say Carillon/Gateway area. I drove through there recently and think it would be a decent location and closer for Hillsborough residents.

I did a thesis project on the Toytown site...
not as great as the paper makes it seem.

True, but if the stadium itself hold up from being built on a dump site, I'd be all for it....
Did I mention I live like 5 minutes from it? That was def in my thought process
by TheUltimateBucFan on Mar 11, 2009 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's not ideal.
We did a project where we had to design a cemetery/reflection type intervention. Although its sandwiched between interstates, it’s still Florida traffic at 5PM everyday = not good at all for baseball traffic.

The problem with the Trop is the location sucks
When people go to a game they want a fun time, and that means more than the just the actual baseball game. If so they would just watch it on tv.
There are plenty of decent locations to pick from. Yes they all have problems. The problem would be less than the Trop though. Or you could always solve the problem. Build some freaking roads and parking garages.
I live in the Carillon area now and traffic can get kind of rough during rush hour (esp where Ulmerton and Roosevelt merge). However I’m sure there are quite a few ways to build some new roads to make it a bit smoother.
It would put tons of people to work and it would be a great stimulus to the economy. Too bad we can’t get the Feds to pay for it.

When the substitution effect is accounted for, not really
But it would probably help some developer remain solvent in the short term.
