3/13/09 GDT: Rays @ Jays; Hernandez and Hammel Battle

Game Time: 1:05

TV/Radio: None

Lineups:

Pitchers: LH Carlos Hernandez, RH Jason Hammel, LH Brian Shouse

Things to watch: Obviously the lineup is not one of the things to watch. No regulars and a mix match of infielders playing in different positions including two in the outfield.

Interesting to see Carlos Hernandez picking up another start with Jason Hammel working out of the bullpen again. The two figure to go around four innings a piece with Brian Shouse being the only other scheduled pitcher. Today could go a long way in deciding the fifth starter's role.

Ugh

Yesterdays lineup and pitching made it feel like the season was close. This lineup looks like ST is first starting today.

Umm, Hammel, work on your trade value or something.

Maybe

More likely in the second half. Aki’s option for next year is below-market anyway, so unless the team gets in a huge financial crunch, they’ll pick up the option.

Oh

I was under the impression they wanted nothing to do with his option.

Maybe not if the market keeps collapsing

but at worst the option should make Aki a useful trading chip

What a guy

Bat Burrell

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Pat Burrell isn’t with the Phillies anymore, yet the City of Brotherly Love is still close to his heart.

The former Philadelphia slugger took out large ads in two of the city’s largest newspapers Friday to thank the fans for their support during his nine seasons with the club.

And that's after they booed him.

I can only hope B.J. is so kind to use when he leaves. :(

How about this little chart I put together for 2008

Name OBPa Slga OPSa
Garza 0.306 0.377 0.683
Shields 0.299 0.409 0.708
Kazmir 0.309 0.418 0.727
Sonny 0.309 0.448 0.757
Jackson 0.356 0.444 0.800

That was with Garza getting off to a pretty weak start. Hopefully him and Navi start on the same page from the gate.

Not to go Joe Morgan on you, but his fastball usage was quite consistent.

We’re talking about 70% usage for each of the three sets of 10 and about 93 MPH as the average velocity.

So they were taking a lot earlier on and then started to get more aggressive in the middle

and then kind of tapering off at the end. I think what killed him in the beginning of the year was the once a game temper tantrum after a guy missed a play. He couldn’t settle down after that and always led to a big inning.

ok

so that means $5 for both of them? sorry i’m new to the bookie game

by daveh33 on Mar 13, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

and if briggy gets a hit but zoby doesn't

thats $2 for me but $5 for you., correct?

by daveh33 on Mar 13, 2009 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Briggy gets a hit but Zobrist doesn't

You both break even. Bookie makes two bucks if neither gets a hit, he makes 7 bucks if both get a hit.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

by Brickhaus on Mar 13, 2009 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

huh?

so how does “bookie” win with the 2 extreme outcomes? [both hitting or neither hitting]

by daveh33 on Mar 13, 2009 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What I meant was that if briggy 0'fers you owe me a buck, if he gets a hit I owe you 2

OR

If they both get hits I owe you 7 if neither you owe me 2. You can either take the first bet or both?

Why yes, I am this big of an asshole in person.

by Sandy Kazmir on Mar 13, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You pay me two bucks before the bets are on

One for the Briggy bet, one for the both bet. If you lose, I keep the money. If you win the Briggy bet, I pay you $2. If you win the both bet, I pay you $7 ($2 for the Briggy bet, $5 for the both bet). Over the course of numerous bets with similar spreads, I should end up making money, since there’s probably only about a 2/7 chance that Brignac actually gets a hit and about a 4/49 chance that both get a hit (2/7 × 2).

In other words, if you’re willing to take that risk, the bet heavily favors the bookie, unless I’ve miscalculated the chance that one of them gets a hit.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

by Brickhaus on Mar 13, 2009 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No you're right thats why I offered it

Briggy is not a .500 hitter so 2:1 favors the bookie, and even if they were both .300 hitters, which they are not and never will be, there would only be a 9% chance of having to pay out the 5:1.

Why yes, I am this big of an asshole in person.

by Sandy Kazmir on Mar 13, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I interpreted your statement to mean that you wanted to make that bet

which is why I offered to be your bookie.

Joyce

Still just under a week away but looks like we finally have a date of his debut

Also, Matt Joyce, sidelined all spring by right lower leg tenditinis, is tentatively scheduled to make his exhibition debut as the DH on Thursday.

And Izzy will pitch this weekend. Still don’t know about the Bossman :(

You need lots of catchers

So the pitchers can warm up early on in spring training. Matt Spring wasn’t brought in to contend for a job, he was brought in to catch pitchers throwing off a mound for the first time in months. If he got an at-bat, it’s probably one more than he deserves.
