Potential Trades?
Hey all,
Im kind of new around here. I was looking at a few of the threads and I was wondering what are your thoughts of trading some of our players?
If we would trade any one of our prospects, starters, or reserves who would it be? I voted for hopefully nobody. This team is loaded with talent. Trades are built for re-building, or making a run. This team is trying to make another run, but our team is stacked as it is! The only guys that i could see the rays trading would be Niemann or Brignac. Both could be very good at the next level. Niemann could showcase his talents for a month as the 5th starter than deal him and let Price fill in. For Brignac we already have a solid list of shortstops including Beckham who is far from ready and Zobrist can play SS. I still hope nobody is traded this year.

Hammel
Padres want an out of option pitcher, Hammel will be pretty good there, Maybe we can throw in a Houser/Hughes/Talbot and get a Kyle Blanks
I know I shouldn’t read too much into Spring stats but I would want a lot for Niemann, he has had injuries, waited forever and he is finally going to get a chance. Short term solid SP, long term stud RP, not exactly in a rush to trade him.

Hammel
This team is overloaded in ready-right-now starting pitching. Of those pitchers, Hammel is the worst of the group, but is still good enough to be at least a #5 for a good handful of teams. The team did some good work in trading Jackson so relieve some of that glut, but I think the team still needs to get rid of one more.

Who would trade for Hammel?
I understand the idea of trading for Hammel, but who would want Hammel unless we we’re willing to dump him for nothing. If we’re okay in receiving nothing in return then I’m all for trading Hammel. But, remember no matter who you decide to trade that we must have obvious replacements in the case of an injury.
Orioles, Marlins, Nationals...

No room in Texas...
They still have to figure out what to do with Millwood, Padilla, Feldman, McCarthy, Nippert, Feldman and Harrison…
Now the Astros would be a great destination, but who are they going to trade?
Padres are a definite possibility, as well as the Nats. I doubt there is an interdivsion deal with the O’s or that he can make the rotation with the Marlins.
Ugh, Astros
Only spect worth a damn is Castro and obviously that’s not happening

Rays aren't afraid to trade in-division to the O's
They did so last year with them for Bradford. A trade with the O’s might not happen at the beginning of the season, but the two teams aren’t afraid to deal with each other and something could happen if the O’s show they’re not going to be able to keep pace with the big-3. The teams that you can’t deal with in the ALE are the Yankees and Red Sox, but the Rays, Jays, and O’s I don’t think have problems dealing with each other.
As for not making the rotation for the Marlins, there is no way that Hammel isn’t better then Andrew Miller right now. Miller has all of 4 minor league appearences before being called up to the Majors. He would be so much better if he could get a year of seasoning between AA and AAA.

Part of re-building is maintaining the talent level while keeping the payroll from growing.
Over the next few years, the Rays will need to trade some guys moving from the $3M salary range to the $10M salary range. Since they have such a deep farm system, the young guys should be merely a small step down from the high priced guys. And, trading players in their primes will return stud prospects for the next “re-building” phase.
My current choice is Scott Kazmir, probably after this season at this point.

That's true!
We have to trade players like Kaz or CC if we can’t afford them or if we have a year without contention … and what we have to get in return are high impact prospects to hold the salaries low!
We also have to try to trade marginal players (like Hammel) who won’t help us at the big league level that much for young prospects!
… Bottom line: The farm system has to keep producing!
GMs are becoming increasingly hesitant to trade stud prospects for rent-a-players
While achieving elite prospects for their players should be the teams goal, we have to set more realistic expectations. Trading a stud for a rent-a-player can very well cost you your job if it doesn’t help you reach the playoffs during that player’s contract year.
The Young/Harris for Garza/Bartlett trade was a risky trade for the Rays that paid off huge dividends. I remember that when this trade went down, the sentiment here was that it was going to benefit both teams; and while it’s still early and things might change over the long run, clearly the Rays have been a much larger benefactor of this trade then the Twins. Trades like this one are more along the lines of what I’d expect to see from here on out with the understanding that even though they really haven’t so far, sooner or later, and once in a while, the Rays are going to miss on a trade.

I'm not just talking about rent-a-players
I’m talking about guys who have 2-3 years left on a good, but not great contracts. Like Kaz with a contract that goes:
09:$6M, 10:$8M, 11:$12M, 12:$13.5M club option ($2.5M buyout)
That’s not insignificant money to the Rays, even though it’s a good contract. Instead of signing AJ Burnett for $16M per year, other teams should be willing to give up a nice package of prospects for Kaz, because they’d be getting surplus value for multiple years, not just half a year or a year and a half.

Pure speculation here but
The Marlins have cut 3 guys from their 40 man. We know our team is quiet about deals, well, except for the Cabrera blockbuster, so are they. Maybe we are talking to them about 2 pitchers like Hammel and Cormier/Wheeler or someone and then we can add Izzy and either have Niemann have start the season as a SP or have Price come up right away.
Just something to think about, they love young pitching, would like Hammel and get a hard on for Niemann, they don’t seem to be going after any FA’s and they now have 3 open spots.
Evan Longoria and David Price - the fight for my heart
I could see them trading for Niemann or Hammel
but I don’t think a low payroll team like the Marlins would want Wheeler’s salary.
question about Cormier...
if he is cut before the season starts and (to make the math easier) gets picked up before the season starts and gets a ML roster spot, will the Rays still be on the hook for the entire $650k or that amount minus the ML min. (~400k)?
