Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

3/3/09 Game Day Thread: Astros @ Rays

Game Time: 1:05

TV/Radio: MLB Gameday Audio

Lineup:

Jason Bartlett SS
Carl Crawford LF
Ben Zobrist 1B
Pat Burrell DH
Gabe Kapler RF
Dioner Navarro C
Adam Kennedy 3B
Ray Sadler CF
Reid Brignac 2B
Jeff Niemann P

Other pitchers scheduled: LH Brian Shouse, RH Jason Childers, RH Dewon Day, RH Neal Frontz, RH Derek Rodriguez

To Watch: Jeff Niemann makes his second start of the spring. Realistically, the competition for the fifth starter is Niemann, Price and Hammel. Price has yet to throw and Hammel has been excellent.  Niemann has to be good today.

The Rays lineup basically features four middle infielders with Ben Zobrist playing 1B and Adam Kennedy playing 3B. Not quite the corner infielders you would expect, but Kennedy and Zobrist are competing for utility positions. Neither player has played the position in a Major League regular season game. Reid Brignac gets the start at second base.

Also interested in seeing how Derek Rodriguez fares in this one.

Joe Maddon says he does not expect Matt Joyce to be ready to play by Friday.

Also the Astros lineup is WONDERFUL today

Michael Bourn CF
Edwin Maysonet SS
Darin Erstad RF
Jason Michaels LF
David Newhan DH
Chris Johnson 3B
Jason Smith 2B
Mark Saccomanno 1B
J.R. Towles C

And the man who R.J. calls the most underrated starter in the game, former Ray, Brandon Backe starting.

Towely should be a good one

I wonder if Jaso has a chance

If he winds up with a great spring and Riggans fails hard, I wonder if he has any shot at being the backup C

Evan Longoria and David Price - the fight for my heart

by joeybw on Mar 3, 2009 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

I'd say probably not.

The only chance I think Jaso has involves Riggans getting hurt.
I don’t think Riggans has any options, but I can’t be sure of shit anymore.

by Vin on Mar 3, 2009 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

Jaso only played 31 games in AAA.

Im sure the Rays want him playing everyday and working on his defense instead of playing once a week in the Majors. If Something happens to Riggans, Michel Hernandez would get the nod before Jaso at least early on.

You can get a 360 for 400 dollars on Amazon.com except it doesn’t come with all I said above so if you going to buy the wireless adapter ($80.00) and Xbox Live ($50 for a year) You are actually going to spend more.

I'm not seriously debating a comparison between the 360 and PS3 with anyone.

It’s been done a million times before, it’ll be done a million times again, and it will only stop when the next generation of consoles appear, where it will be picked up anew.

Don’t waste your time on this.

it is not a suitable replacement when the rest of the world uses monopoly, or rather excel, you can’t even upload to google docs

Does it do the things Excel does?

I have Works SS which sucks. Can I have multiple sheets, do Vlookups, text-to-columns, pivottables, etc?

by rglass44 on Mar 3, 2009 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

It is essentially the same, but it doesn't share well

You can work on stuff on there and then copy, paste into excel later with slight formatting errors but nothing major, it is probably your best recourse, because Works is inappropriately named

Why yes, I am this big of an asshole in person.

by Sandy Kazmir on Mar 3, 2009 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

It can do those things, obviously the menus and such are different so doing so is different.

But Sandy brought up a good point; you can’t sync it with google docs. In addition, if you’re using statistical package add-ons for excel, those probably won’t work with calc. I don’t know if there are any equivelents. I use excel myself.

Setbacks will be the death of me
OF Matt Joyce said he had a setback this morning with his strained right calf, another frustrating hurdle in him getting onto the field for the first time since getting acquired in the offseason in the Edwin Jackson trade.

Joyce had said a few days ago he was feeling great, and yesterday about “90 percent.” But when he came in this morning, it hurt a little more, and manager Joe Maddon said he won’t be playing Friday, as Joyce earlier predicted.

Looks like he was just about ready and now hes hurting again

i would, but I should've mentioned its a roto league

my team is mostly young… but I do have Chipper and Cliff Lee… I could compete this year… its a 20-team league.

Chad Qualls and Street are still available… after them it gets ugly…

by daveh33 on Mar 3, 2009 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

between those two

You could be decent at saves and just trade if need be. I wouldn’t reach for them (especially not Street who terrifies me).

by rglass44 on Mar 3, 2009 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

I am trying to trade up to get Qualls

I could’ve taken him a few picks ago… but Kelly Shoppach was sitting there staring at me, and I didn’t yet have a catcher either…

I went for SP and young OF and stud bats right away… now I’m without SS, 2B, and RP. and there are 50 picks before I get another one. its ok though… my farm kicks ass. Beckham, Porcello, L Morrison, DJ, Dominic Brown, Weglarz, Matt Moore, Jefry Marte, etc… we count OBP in addition to the usual 5 cats… so I loaded up on good disciplined minor league bats [except for briggy, lol]

Evan Longoria and David Price - the fight for my heart

Niemann's mechanics

Haven’t there been a couple articles floating around in the blogosphere that Jeffy’s arm action and delivery but him at particular risk for elbow trouble?

Possibly this is another good reason for him to be in the pen. Even if he would be better than Sonny now, Davis would be calling on that spot next year, all things being equal.

by Lurch's Lobbyists on Mar 3, 2009 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

I don't have a problem with that

Because I agree about Davis, think he’s better, but make Niemann a SP this year and convert him next year or trade him. If he has a fantastic season then we could get some real value for him as a SP. RP? not so much value

I could be wrong though

by staplemaniac on Mar 3, 2009 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think it's his arm action as much as his injury history

that makes it more likely that he’ll have injury problems in the future.

by staplemaniac on Mar 3, 2009 3:17 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not in a position to say either way.

I don’t know enough about biomechanics and don’t intend to.

My word of advice is be extremely weary of people who say “Player X’s swing looks awful/beautiful” or ‘Player X’s delivery is injury proof/injury waiting to happen."

Generally speaking, they probably don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about.

And that’s not to hate on DrivelineMechanics. I don’t know enough about Boddy to say either way. I know he dabbles with Marshall’s teachings and that’s about it.

How awesome is this line

and in the end, the true measure of one’s viewing experience is the ratio of time spent hearing the announcers speak to time spent hearing yourself breathe while you stare fixedly at the screen with your chin in your hands. I rubbed my thumbs raw with my stubble.

I can't wait for this weekend

All our starters finally start pitching, Pena makes his debut, maybe Joyce can get healthy by the end of the week also. Then it will just be waiting on Upton and the fight for the #5 spot. Price needs his chance!

so if the rays trade Bartlett for good value

and Briggy hits .150/.250/.400 with 20 HRs and above average glovework… anyone gonna mind?

by daveh33 on Mar 3, 2009 4:26 PM EST reply actions

Yeah kind of an odd slash line.

Now give me .250/.350/.400 and your talking.

by twenty5psi on Mar 3, 2009 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

That slashline doesn't look Brignacian

Would end up more like .250/.280/.420 if he gets a batting average that high.

If anyone hits below .200, people are going to mind, whether or not it’s justified. If he ended at .190/.400/.600 with Ozzie Smith’s glove, the radio personalities would still be calling for Maddon’s head if he kept playing him, solely because he’s below the Mendoza line.

Vogt early, Vogt often.
