Around Christmas, RJ did a piece on Percival's wOBAA as it related to his various DL trips. Seeing all the talk about outrighting Troy or how he should be used, I figured it might be a good time to revisit his year last year. I again broke his season down into 4 parts (by DL stint), and this time I figured we'd look at his FIP. I used the basic FIP formula [(13*HR)+(3*BB-IBB+HBP)-(2*K)/IP] and used 3.13 for the league adjustment because that's what it was for the AL last year. Here's a lovely table depicting his performance:
| IP | HR | BB+HBP | K | Raw FIP | Adj. | FIP | |
| 4/5-5/28 | 21.3 | 3 | 4 | 21 | 0.42 | 3.13 | 3.55 |
| 6/13-6/30 | 6.7 | 1 | 7 | 9 | 2.40 | 3.13 | 5.53 |
| 7/20-8/14 | 11.0 | 3 | 8 | 6 | 4.64 | 3.13 | 7.77 |
| 9/3-9/28 | 6.7 | 2 | 9 | 2 | 7.35 | 3.13 | 10.48 |
| Total | 45.7 | 9 | 28 | 38 | 2.74 | 3.13 | 5.87 |
As you can see, before the first DL trip he was fairly effective. With each DL stint, he got worse and worse and worse...
In looking at this I wouldn't be afraid to let him start at the back-end of the bullpen, but the second he starts walking people I'd send him packing.
Here's a graph so you can really see the sucktitude:
