It's great having Upton back...
Good first game by B.J. He really showed how dangerous he can be on the base paths.

Can I be the first to say...
Everyone loves a good healthy BJ.

BJ
is the best player in baseball by 2010.
Evan will be the face of the club but BJ is king.

Gross has made great strides
Love to see Navi and Crawford do better
Let's not overlook Iwamura
3SB and 5 walks in the first 7 games is very leadoff-hitter like. I like what he’s doing so far.
Check out my blog on web development at kericr.wordpress.com
and coming out of the 9 hole he essentially is a leadoff
Bartlett in the 8 hole is also leadoff like, then you get the Beej up with runner on. OOOOOOOO-IE that’s nice

Upton should bat leadoff all season. I like Barty and Aki rounding out at the 8 and 9 spots.
If Upton can run on some other teams like he ran on Posada, I would expect to see a lot of 1-0 or 2-0 scores after the first inning. Also, You could switch Upton and Crwford between 1 and 2, if Carl doesn’t bitch and moan.
The best part of that game, even more so than the grand slam, was seeing Upton and Crawford flying around the diamond in the first. I understand the collective statistical “meh” regarding stealing attempts and there worth; but that was God Damn exciting.
It seemed to destroy Wangers fragile psyche from the get
Not saying he would have pitched well without them toying with his brain, but it sure didn’t help him out.

Stolen bases are valuable.
Just gotta make sure you succeed a good amount of the time.

Plus
When you just look at the value of the SB, you also don’t see the extra value of distracting the catcher and pitcher a bit. There isn’t a huge difference there either, but I suspect there are certain pitchers who it affects greatly.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Wang and Posada were obviously uncompfortable last night.
Stolen bases and extended at bats together like last night must drive the pitcher crazy.
Maybe.
That half a second between the throw’s start sometimes feels like a minute.

I can't find the research now, unfortunately, but I've seen studies suggesting the hitter is distracting at least as much as the pitcher in these situations.
Beyond the Boxscore // Calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy.
Baseball between the Numbers looked at it a little.
Dismissed it pretty quickly, and I do think I have seen it elsewhere, as well.
I remeber a post on this very subject, but what around what percentage of success makes it worth it?
Excluding all of the phycological aspects.
If Upton can get on base like he has been, we can expect to see a lot of 2-0 and 3-0 scores after the first inning.

Upton's so good at baseball, he counts as 2 runs by himself when he crosses home plate
Vogt early, Vogt often.
; )
I just mean getting on base in front of Longo/Pena/Burrell is much more important than getting from first to second. But 300+ SB would be nice, too.

If B.J. broke Rickeys record...
Rickey would come out of retirement to try and beat it. You know he would get someone to take him.
Swav or Die.
