A rant about ads
Normally, I wouldn't do this, but I'm growing tired of what I'm seeing.
It's rather funny how often this came up during the season last year, and realistically it has little to do with the Rays play on the field. It was a much-debated topic, one that saw both sides fighting mightily to no end. Dead bodies were strewn all over the battlefield, and in the end, there was no clear victor.
I'm talking about the advertising that appears on this site.
The consistent argument that was presented was that if you wanted to make sure you didn't see these ads, the solution was as simple as downloading Firefox and using Ad-Block plus. At the time, I didn't use FF as my primary browser for a very specific reason, but I have since switched and use FF as my primary browser.
Using Ad-Block plus on the otherhand, that's completely different. AdBlock is a magnificent tool, but with a caveat. If Ad-Block is being used on your machine, there is no way that SBNation is making any money from your visit to the site. Generally, there are two ways that ads generate revenue, displays, and clickthrus. Obviously, if you don't click through, then there is no revenue generated, and that's fine. It's our option as viewers not to click through ads, and I often don't. However, Ad-Block also prevents the generation of ads completely through it's filters, so it never registers as an ad display through the content service provider, thus costing SBN valuable revenue.
Me personally, I generally default ABP to off on a majority of my regular sites. I leave it on for ESPN and the SP Times because their ads are simply too obnoxious for me to want to see them.
I've left ABP off for DRaysBay and other SBN sites because I want the company to make money off my visits. But if that's going to continue, seriously, shit like this:
Has to stop. I don't want to see ads for Red Sox gear, or Yankees gear, or Phillies gear. I'm not going to buy their gear, not even to wipe my ass with. I don't come to this site to talk about or read on about any of these teams. Rays ads are fine. Generic ads about last-minute vacations are fine. Ads to buy discounted Red Sox gear are not. Someone. Make. It. Stop.

It's keyword generated.
You talk about the Red Sox here a lot. Get AdBlock and stop bitching.

Wait, just saw that yoiu have AdBlock.
As far as I know, the ads still generate money whether you use AdBlock or not.

I have AdBlock on.
I’m a bad little indentured servant.

It depends on the provider.
For the example, I used an ad that was displayed through AdSense, which does not provide revenue on anything but clickthroughs. The top banner ad, side poster ad and the ads displaying between the stories on the front page are all from different content providers however, and many of them pay on both displayed and clicked through ads, and we’ve seen plenty of the same kind of garbage in those ad listings as well.

At LL we set up a PayPal donation for the authors once a year or so.
If you really care about making sure the content providers get compensated for their efforts, that’s the best way to go. Not to sound like a dick, but I think SBN and Kos are doing just fine thanks. I’d way rather my money go straight to the authors.

That makes sense, but it's all one big machine.
I understand what you’re saying; I’m not debating whether or not the authors are making cash through the ads that are served to me though. The logistics of the funneling of revenue streams isn’t something I care to debate, it’s not worth the time or effort for either of us. I just don’t want to see any more damn Red Sox ads and I would prefer not to turn on AdBlock plus to do it.

I just don't see your point here.
You get amazingly in-depth analysis for free. You don’t like seeing the Red Sox ads; okay, fine. I get that. Luckily, you have a way to block the ads and R.J. as on the record as saying “go for it.” What’s the problem? Don’t feel like taking five seconds to turn on AdBlock? Don’t like the fact that a Rays blog is besmirched by Red Sox ads? I just don’t understand what the big deal is here.

Can one of the writers for this site
get a confirmation/denial that you’re not getting revenue if someone uses AdBlock? I’m sure most of us would be happy to turn it off, as for the Red Sox ads that obviously sucks, but if they are consistently the same ad you can adblock those individually.

To be completely honest, it doesn't seem like the revenue that comes in has anything to do with how the site performs.
How many clicks, how many links, whatever else. We (the writers) aren’t earning money off ads.
Do whatever makes it best for you.

Some of us aren't earning any.
or aware that others were.

All of my money comes from FG.
Each site is getting about the same amount of money per month that I get in a good week, or two weeks in most cases.

I guess my new editor post elsewhere on SBN won't be my ticket to riches then
Oh well, guess I’ll keep toiling away in the office.

Thanks RJ
just didn’t want to be eliminating some of your income since I read the site for ~1 hour a day during the week.

Should every future fanpost include “Jessica Alba naked” 100 times?

check out pewterreport.com
This ad is also on Pewter Report’s website for the Buc’s ….I made mention of it months ago and the main guy said he has no control over it. So one would ask…..How and why do they even want their ads on Tampa based sites? Ad Block is an okay route to use, but still you have to ask why….
