Half of my mock draft
1. Washington Nationals – Stephen Strasburg, RHP, SDSU – The best pitching prospect in at least 20 years, the only choice for the nationals, no matter how dumb they are.
2. Seattle Mariners – Dustin Ackley, OF, UNC – Best college position player by far. Low floor, high ceiling. Good power and OBP and a solid fielder in CF.
3. San Diego – Andrew Oliver, LHP, OKST – Good fastball and a decent breaking ball from the left side. K’s about a quarter of batters, Control issues?
4. Pittsburgh – Alex White, RHP, UNC – Pittsburgh gets pitching depth. Good K/BB, gets a lot of groundballs with sinker.
5. Baltimore – Grant Green, SS, USC – 5 tools, good power, Baltimore needs a SS. Walk rate needs to get better.
6. San Fransisco – Donavon Tate, CF, HS – 5 tool player with a strong commitment to UNC. Sizemore-esque like Ceiling, but probably won’t reach it.
7. Atlanta – Kyle Gibson, RHP, Missouri – Great stuff, probably the best of anyone not named Stfrasburg. Wren knows you cannot have too much young pitching.
8. Cincinatti Reds – Tyler Matzek, LHP, HS – Plus velocity, good mechanics. Best high school arm in the nation, Reds SHOULD be able to sign him.
9. Detroit – Zack Wheeler, RHP, HS – 96 MPH Fastball with sink, doesn’t walk. Makes a very nasty 1-2 along with Porcello in the future.
10. Washington(Compensation for Crow) – Rich Poythress, 1B, Georgia – Great power potential, a bit of a reach but Washington probably goes cheap due to strasburg.
11. Colorado – Tanner Scheppers, LHP, St. Paul’s – Great lefty prospect last year before injury, makes his game debut in a week or two, so his stock will fluctuate from here.
12. Kansas City – Matt Purke, LHP, HS – Higher ceiling than Matzek, but worse mechanics. + fastball and + slider with a decent change.
13. Oakland – Mike Minor, LHP, Vandy – Strikes out a ton, and is probably the best college pitcher left on the board, since lord knows Oakland won’t draft a HS arm.
14. Texas – Matt Davidson, 3B, HS – EXTREMELY HIGH potential, but also a very low floor. power potential is insane. Should hit for average.
15. Cleveland – Luke Bailey, C, HS – Toolsy Catcher who has been very good. Could fall but I’m a believer.
16. Arizona – Shelby Miller, RHP, HS – Arizona has two picks in the first so they probably go for cheaper HS pitchers. Miller hits 95 on the gun, but has some control issues and tends to not go very far into games.
