Tampa Bay Rays President Matt Silverman Speaks on Revenue

The Tampa Tribune has a nice piece up on just about every facet of the Rays revenue. From tickets to TV, it's all there. Here's a Silverman quote:

Overall, even with its fortunes rising, the Rays may be "cash-flow negative" this year, with more money going out than coming in, Silverman said. The team was cash-flow positive last year, he said.

Also, this quote is excellent:

The magazine also estimated the Rays' value at $290 million last year, good for 29th place, just ahead of the Florida Marlins.

Silverman insisted the ranking doesn't matter.

"It's not relevant," he said, "because the team is not for sale."

Clearly Silverman is on the fence about the issue.

Let's see
Home game attendance at Tropicana Field soared 30 percent last year, from 1.4 million fans in 2007 to about 1.8 million last year. That’s good news, but it still doesn’t put the team much beyond the middle of the pack among the 30 major league teams.

Wow, last time I checked, 26th in the league wasn’t anywhere near middle of the pack. Considering the Trop has a capacity of about 36,000, if they sold out every game this year, the Rays would be looking at a maximum attendance of about 3M, which would only be good for about 10th in the league. Middle of the pack is exactly what this team should be aiming for long term, around 2.4-2.6 million.

Most teams coming off a World Series appearance average about 2.5 million fans the following year, said Mark Fernandez, a Rays senior vice president and chief sales officer.

That may be a little ambitious for the Rays, so the team is using 2 million fans as a goal this year. By comparison, perennial fan favorites the New York Yankees draw about 4 million fans a year.

I believe I’ve stated this before, the front office has an established track record of conservative estimates. Indeed, 2.5M may be a little bit ambitious this year, but 2M sounds a bit low; roughly 25k per game. I would hope that we do better than that.

Commenting on the cash-flow-negative estimate, I seriously hope that isn’t the case, even without a playoff appearance. I know they’re pushing for a new stadium, but I really do find the idea that they’re going to lose any significant amount of money this year laughable unless something unbelievably bad happens.

They SHOW losses.

These are accounting losses. They mean nothing in terms of actual LOSSES. If they actually lost money no one would buy sports franchises. It’s about increasing value and paying back on the margin.

For the record.

I think even the Yankees show “losses” every year. They don’t take in television rights, though, because of the murky YES ish.

No offense...

But that’s the BIGGEST load of bullshit I’ve read. Mattie did word it “may be” to cover his ass. This team is a cash cow. So how does Stu claim poverty? Well, he did buy the team with his other business interests and w/o a doubt is repaying the debt. I’m certain with the windfall of cash <$23M in the post season alone> Stu without a doubt is the highest paid Rays employee. Then of course one can report a loss for the team is Sternbergs salary is say $50M or so. Or do we just bury the Rays in small interest loans to Sternbergs other co.‘s? How many of Stu’s family members are on the take? So many ways to hide profit it’s sick.

Or, is it what Stu isn’t saying? Could it be the Wallstreet tycoon is taking a beating himself with the Wallstreet collapse and he’s subsidizing his income from the Rays?

Things that make you go … hmmmmmmmmmmm

"It's not relevant," he said, "because the team is not for sale."

This is key. They are building value by branding this team and building a following with a possible new stadium down the road. They invest more and more and show cash-flow losses that negate tax burdens and continue to pay down what they owe. They are building the franchise brilliantly and I would expect it to be worth way more than what they bought it for when this group sells it. The LT benefits will be enormous compared to the ST expenditures. This is why I take all comments about freezes in player salary with a grain of salt.

I'd like to see how much they made on merch last year

That number should follow a diminishing returns type curve over the next few years.

That's why teams change unis so often.

It’s so frustrating. Even teams like the Red Sawx resort to those gawd-awful green unis to appeal to all the Mick and Sullies in Beantown.

That's fine

I love making fun of the green-jersey clad mooks that can’t recite half the guys on their team.

The road uniforms are wrong

Still no explanation on that and now they have reneged on returning Tampa Bay to the road uniforms in 2010.

Catbird Seat

He is sitting in the catbird seat – failure to draw gives them leverage to move….if they draw great! I used to hold 4 season tickets back in the late 90’s early 00’s to support the team. I gave up on Namoli – but I am back with a 20 seat package this year. Let’s hope we pack the Trop in 09.

If the profit/loss numbers released

by sports teams were at all close to accurate, why are investors paying record numbers every time one is up for sale?

by Raymondo on Apr 3, 2009 3:04 PM EDT reply actions

Teams rarely, if ever, actually release P/L numbers...

a lot of times you will conjecture from media or vague references by management

Boom. Outta Here.

Pretty weak article overall.

Absolutely no mention of fixed revenue streams like Central Fund and Revenue Sharing. Since both come from 2008 numbers, they’ll largely hold up in 2009 – revenues in baseball were basically flat in ’08.

A financial puff piece. The Rays aren’t going to see some of the profit ratios they have in the last few years, and it’s good that the management is investing in the club. But I doubt a loss is in the offing – I think Fortune has spent enough time on this issue that they’ve got a decent handleon things. I hope the payroll growth will continue for you all – casual fans need longer term faces to follow. Casting off the big names can carry a price, not that you should keep overpriced guys. But you don’t yet have any of major significance.

I’m not buying the woe and wail either – we heard a bit of that last year too. Lowering epectations so they can play the “see what we’re doing for this team?” role. And that’s okay – getting the fans to be behind management is a good change in Tampa. It’s just unfortunate the economy has tanked when it seemed the breakout was really coming.

or could it be

a prelude to saying goodbye to Carl Crawford next season as we know when Stu reaches in his pocket next season according to Matt the only thing he’ll pull out is lint. Before the 2008 campaign started Crawfords option was picked up. My question, at 27 yrs old and in the peak of his career why are we not hearing the words “contract extention” if C.C. is in the plans for next season?

I have a pretty good feeling we may be seeing someone with the initials “M.J.” starting in LF next season as management covers the future bases quite well.

It will be a sad day watching Crawford walk the plank in TB if it does come down to it with all the records he’s shattered as a Ray, being the best all time Ray, and wouldn’t it be great to see this guy retire in a TB uni?
