Jason Hammel for Aneury Rodriguez Deal Might Be Close

Update: Look's like we have a few different scenarios floating around. One would be the Rays trading Hammel to the Rockies for Rodriguez after Sunday's minor league game in Port Charlotte. Another would see the Rays DFA Hammel giving the Rockies a few extra days to juggle their roster. It's my understanding the Rockies would like to have Franklin Morales start Wednesday's game and send him down to Triple-A until a fifth starter is needed later on in April. The Rockies would then carry eight relievers. In any event, it looks like a deal will get done. This mean Jeff Niemann will be the Rays fifth starter and Lance Cormier will claim the last spot in the bullpen.~Tommy

Hammel is out of options, which is why Tampa Bay is looking to trade him. The Rays would lose him on a waiver claim if they tried to send him to the minor leagues. Tampa Bay would receive right-handed pitching prospect Aneury Rodriguez from the Rockies if details can be worked out, according to a Tampa Bay source.

That comes way of Tracy Ringolsby. Looks like the deal might not go through until tomorrow's start, assuming Hammel's arm doesn't explode.

I hope they at least tried for Eric Young Jr.Not that A-rod would be a bad pickup

I like on Hammel's B-ref page

his 7th comparison by age is to a guy named Cuddles Marshall.

Do what you love to do and give it your very best. Whether it's business or baseball, or the theater, or any field. If you don't love what you're doing and you can't give it your best, get out of it. Life is too short. You'll be an old man before you know it.

MLBtraderumors says that

6:03pm: Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times notes that Hammel is scheduled to pitch in a minor league game on Sunday morning. The Rockies and Rays could be waiting for that outing, as to not throw off his schedule

We do.

DFA will do nothing to his value or our ability to trade him. Teams know what situation we’re in. Hammel did not make the team and must be traded. If we designate him, it’ll just give us more time to get a deal worked out.
