Cincinnatti cuts Jonny Gomes

Gomes was "surprised" by the decision, and some of the comments of the fans seem to echo his thoughts. You would think he should be able to find a major league job somewhere, but maybe not at this late date. He would certainly provide depth at AAA for any team that signs him. The Rays have moved on but we could do worse at AAA, and he is acknowledged as a great clubhouse guy and cheerleader. I wish him the best wherever he lands.

Jonny, there is always a place for you here in Tampa....
I’ll get you a headset and you can head of security at the Trop. I could see Gomes out there staring down the crowd in between innings at games. I kid because I love. Seriously, Gomes would be a welcome addition to the AAA club. Kinda makes sense to have a guy you can call up that you are familiar with if something happens. Although I like both guys, It’s not like Weber or Sadler is a huge upgrade.

I wish someone would give this guy a chance.
I’m not too surprised that he didn’t make it though. He started all scalding but since that fanpost was made about his start he’s fallen off the planet.

His OBP could have been better, but he did hit 4 HRs, the most out of the Reds' camp.

Oh, I'm not saying it's fair
The problem is, performance in spring training doesn’t mean anything.
Except, when it’s an audition for an open position on a roster, in which case spring training means everything. Also, Dusty Baker is an idiot, so that doesn’t help either.

If he did go play in Japan, I wouldn't bet against that happening. He's got the right attitude for it.

We know he likes to blow bubbles and would dwarf the natives

God that was a bad movie
I really want to see Sugar though. Not sure if it’s out in markets other than NYC yet, but it looks like it could be the best baseball movie in over a decade.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
I swear there is a total of 10 mins where Stach is wearing a shirt

I take it
This is not what you’re talking about. I stopped searching after I found this to avoid being Rule 34’d.

Uh, no.
More like this one. It’s a story about a Dominican pitching prospect’s adjustment to life in the minor leagues as opposed to at the baseball academy.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Make up a coaching job
He can be “assistant Quality Control” so that every time they play the Red Sox or Yanks, he could “control the quality” when a fight breaks out.
Come to Seattle, Jonny!

He's still a Red.
He hasn’t made his decision (at least publicly) if he’s going to accept his minor league assignment.

Good for him.
Chris Dickerson and Darnell McDonald are starting for Cincinnati right now. The depth chart isn’t exactly deep right now.

Gomes is a bad player
When are you people going to get that through your heads?
by putupyourDUKES on Apr 10, 2009 12:15 PM EDT reply actions
Does that mean we can't root for him to do well?
He has a skill and that skill is hitting left handed pitching for power. If used properly, he is a useful player on a major league roster. Plus, he’s awesome. He’s got that going for him. So if given the choice of Chris Dickerson, Darnell McDonald or Jonny Gomes, I’m taking Gomes every time.
