Carlos Pena idolizes Rob Deer.

Pena's having a big season with the bat so far, posting a league leading 13 home runs and a .414 wOBA for the Rays. If you're a fan of the Three True Outcomes, you'd have loved Pena last week. He stepped to the plate 28 times, and 20 of them ended with a walk (five), strikeout (13), or home run (two). Eight balls in play for the whole week. Not one single. Pena is trying to chase down Jack Cust and Russ Branyan for the title of most TTO hitter in the game.

Points to a post idea for you RJ

likely at FanGraphs, unless it’s been done.

Intuitively, not statistically, it seems to me run scoring and HR’s are way up. I keep hearing about the jet stream in new Yankee Stadium, but it’s happening all over it seems.

My thinking is the ball is once again juiced / extra hard. I’ve heard comments about this. How about a statistical look – and maybe some interview input from someone.

Why did we sit him yesterday?

We should have sat him tomorrow instead. We really could’ve used him yesterday. You never used to see Ortiz or Manny getting rested while playing us.

No passion

Do what you love to do and give it your very best. Whether it's business or baseball, or the theater, or any field. If you don't love what you're doing and you can't give it your best, get out of it. Life is too short. You'll be an old man before you know it.

J.D. Drew used to get rested?

I don’t know exactly what either of you meant by your post but Drew has always had health problems and needs to be rested.

I do think Maddon sits players a tad bit too much, but I do agree that players need to be rested. But here is my question.

Why always on a Sunday? I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but it really seems we do the bulk of our resting on Sundays. I’m sure a lot of the time it has to do with Monday being a possible off day or the early game on Sunday.

But if Monday is an off day why not play him Sunday and then sit him Tuesday? Maddon just seems to rest too many guys at once, against teams we need to beat, or against the toughest pitchers. I’d rather rest guys when we face a scrub.

Can you make a case for him sitting Pena?

JD Drew is not as valuable to the Sox as Pena is to the Rays. Also, Baldelli(when healthy) is better than JD Drew.

I can’t say for sure, but I don’t think Pena’s injuries in the past have been as bad as Drew’s have. Drew has a bad back and that will always stay with him. Pena doesn’t have any nagging injuries like that.

Again, why don’t we rest him against the Orioles? Beckett is not having a good year and 3 for 22 against him is not a big enough sample size.

"Also, Baldelli(when healthy) is better than JD Drew."

Drew’s been a four win player two of the past three seasons. Rocco was close to that in 2006, that’s it. And “when healthy”, really? That’s like saying, “Water, when dry, …”

I can't argue that statistically Drew has been more valuable

but I know you’ve seen a lot of Baldelli and can agree he is a great player. I think Baldelli is a better all around player than Drew. You can’t argue that Baldelli isn’t at least better defensively than Drew(I’m not knocking Drew defensively but Baldelli has the edge). And again, Drew has had way more health problems than Pena, it’s not even close.
