Shawn Riggans Out At Least Another Month
After meeting with Rays Medical director Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., The Rays announced that while Shawn Riggans's bum shoulder won't require surgery, he will be sidelined for at least the next three weeks and would need to start another rehab assignment before rejoinging the team. If everything goes well this time, Riggans would return in mid-June.
It's just another set back for the oft-injured 28 year-old back up catcher, who played in a career high 44 games last year before a staph infection cut his season short in September. He appeared in just one game for the Rays this season and has one hit, a solo home run. For now the Rays will go with Michel Hernandez behind Dioner Navarro, but if Riggans has another set back the Rays may start to inquire about other possible options, if they haven't already. Keep an eye on Greg Zaun and maybe Henry Blanco in the next few weeks.

Yep and Navi is already second in innings caught in the AL. He's going to need a few days off(ducks)
which means more Michel. While Hernandez has been a nice story, I’m not sure I’m ready to hand him 30 starts and 100 plate apperances. Get better Riggans.

Defense
Whatever he lacks in the bat compared to Navarro he makes up for by being able to catch the ball

Nobody knows.
But the worst defensive catcher ever (Piazza) was only worth -10 runs defensively. So, even if Jaso is that bad, he’s only costing us a win defensively, versus the offensive advantage.

So why isn't he up?
Jaso seems to be having a solid year at Durham, has decent contact skills, and excellent plate discipline. Why would the Rays FO not call him up if Riggans is going to be out for an extended period of time?
They may want to see his defense can still improve.
Or they don’t really think his numbers will translate.
I’d want him up instead of Hernandez, though.
It's the former.
I wish we could steal Jeff Clement and throw him back there though.

How exactly was -10 runs calculated for catchers
uzr doesn’t really work for catchers from my understanding.
Does it just use base-stealing against and pass-balls? If so this would be a pretty bad metric.
It's not UZR.
It’s from Tom Tango’s THT article. I forget everything that went into it.
